Really wasn't that bad. I have seen some big acts worse than him including a major "dinosaur" rock band that totally sucked. Given the type of music that they played, not what a rock audience is used to but pretty good.

, Damian Marley has some toasting influences, along with reggae. I'm not a huge fan of toasting (Yellowman :yikes: ), but I'll be interested to hear him. I better be; I think he's opening for three of the four third leg shows I'm going too.

Martha you always surprise me, refreshingly!

Youre right, Damian's trying to appeal to the 'dancehall' community and retain his roots heritage at the same time...its an interesting balance...

(ok so not Yellowman....but in terms of other classic toasting styles check out U-Roy - GREAT stuff!!)

btw Mike I appreciated your review - sounds like you went with an open mind and judged simply the quality of the performance...one thing you do have to give the Marley's, at least the ones I've seen, they really know how to put on a lively show - but then again, have you ever seen Bob's footage? I swear Bono and Mick Jagger took lessons from that guy!! :)

Damian Marley - CRAP!

I've listened to a little bit of the music in preparation for Pittsburgh, sort of a blend of reggae and cRAP, two genres I dislike almost as much as country music. My dream opener would have been Garbage, as they did when I saw U2 at Notre Dame in 2001.

Um, mods, might I respectfully suggest that these two threads be DE-merged?

THe previous poster hasnt seen the show yet, and this is a thread of opinions AFTER the show.

Its kindof misleading because I actually thought that the person had seen the show and was saying it was crap. He just might change his opinion after Saturday, or not, or may not even bother watching it.

At any rate I dont think it belongs, just imho.

I wanted to get some reviews before the Vegas show, I probably won't let an opinion from this thread make my decision, not as long as there are bars in the casino. This obviously isn't a Rap crowd, although I do appreciate the pros/cons of Marley's performance, I'll probabaly catch his show and drink to some reggae beats.

How was Washington last night?

I saw Damian Marley on 10/19 at MCI. The music was fine, but I had to leave because his sound guy had the volume on max (it was about 50% louder than U2's volume). I was seated near the stage, and it was killing my ears. Someone needs to tell his sound mixer that turning up the volume does not make the music sound better.

Damian Marley any opinions?

I just wanted to see what some people thought of Damian Marley if use had a chance to see him yet

I think he wasn't anything special. The bass was way too loud, i could feel it thumping my chest, and i thought the igloo was gonna collapse!

i liked him. i bought his CD. MUCH better than Kings Of Leon and one of the better opening acts I've seen since Gogol Bordello.

that guy (flag man)was so stoned when I saw them in Philly 10/17/05 It was kinda funny. I thought they were a solid act, Its not really my style, but I think If I were more into reggae I would have liked it.

Everyone is right... flagman was the best part of the set. He reminded me of the guy wh used to be in the Mighty Mighty Bosstones who just danced around and that was his job in the band....

Oh - and two Marley songs they covered were Could You Be Loved and Exodus.

Agreed, the bass was too loud for me, although I like reggae music in general, but I felt the bass in my chest, I have an irregular heart beat, and I think it was throwing my heart off :giggle: I had to leave for a while, and was worried about the effect Adam's bass would have, but of course, his bass felt soothing

Solid solid solid performance, from someone who knows reggae music and all its variants inside and out.

This was the Pittsburgh show, 10/22., by far the best quality in terms of production, stage presence and vibes. The crowd was dancing, jumping and waving hands for most of the songs...of course the Bob Marley covers get the most props, and of course I wish there was more of it (the classic Bob stuff that is).

I then watched Institute the following two nights in Detroit. The music is good but not a great 'show' imo. I've also seen Keane (excellent, but not enough variety ie all the songs sound the same) and Kings of Leon (um, no). I thankfully missed Dashboard Confessional all 4 times they were here in Toronto. lol.

So Damian has my vote for best opening act of this leg.

And flag man rules. :D Seeing him and Marley march around the ellipse ramp was priceless!!

Bono is always sound-dropping reggae/Jamaican vibes. In either Pittburgh or Detroit, when introducing Edge as from the future, he laid on the yardie accent and said 'yeah mon - him come from the future'

last night in Detroit he sang Get Up Stand Up during SBS...

FLAG MAN!!!!!! :hyper: I loved him!

I knew you'd want these Gabe, if you want the actuals email me:

I was at Pittsburgh and wasn't really into catching Damien Marley, but he put on a hell of a show and really got the crowd warmed up. Actually all of the Marley brothers were up there at one point... .not sure if one of them was Ziggy or not as I couldn't really make out some of the introductions. The classics that they busted out though were top notch and I can only hope that someone was taping the show.

I've seen Dashboard Confessional, Keane, and Damien Marley thus far and I never thought I'd say this, but Damien got me rockin' the most pre-show.

saw damien marley open on 10/16 in philly- thought he was great! a nice change.

also saw keane at MSG and LOVED them. kinda like coldplay, but better in some ways... fantastic keyboardist and lead singer!

i thought dashboard confessionals sucked big time. sorry to those who like them...

the only other opener i'm seeing is patti smith at the november MSG shows- should be interesting, to say the least! :hyper:

I wish I would've caught one of the shows with Damien Marley, it sounds like I would've enjoyed it (I love his fathers music - 'No woman no cry' is one of the top 20 MP3's I listen to most)

I was disapointed in Dahboard confessional :sigh: all of their songs were pretty much the same thing. But I was pleasantly surprised by Institute, I wasn't expecting much from them going in to the show, so it was nice to hear something worth listening to

and may I add - I really admire the variety in U2's opening acts

*Kimla squeals with excitement* To hear Bono say, "Him come from di future." Oh that's so awesome. :hyper: When B snipetted a little of Exodus at the Philly I show, I went crazy on the front rail of the ellipse.

At MSG he tried the same thing. During Elevation Bono looked down at my Jamaican t-shirt and said, "I'm a believah in you, an' di Edge." It sounded so wrong I ended up laughing at him. :reject:

My favorite part was when Mr. Marley, eyes half closed in a possible daze? said, "Hey Pittsburgh, you ain't seen nothing like this, check this out!" Then his two women singers began to gyrate like nothing I had indead seen since 1990's MC Hammer dance. Someone behind me suggested that maybe they were trying to shake a baby out. I found them, and the flag man entertaining, but would have much rather seen the killers.

I like almost all kinds of music, including some reggae, but the Marleys didn't do it for me - although the guy with the flag sure had some stamina. Did you see the Marleys' eyes?? They were obviously high - not that there's anything wrong with that.

Kimla... I think I saw you outside MSG after the 10/7 show outside waiting for the band. That was you in the yellow, right?

(oh, I saw you on stage too... right?)

I loved in Toronto 2 when Bono started flingin down the accent...before Elevation, saying something like

'Irie nation, good vibration, across di nation'

then he said

'we're a band from Jamaica called U2'

that guy is such a card...

GET UP STAND UP!!!

Kymani really looks like his dad, and sings like him too!!

I'm glad to hear others liked Damien Marley. I felt like a fool being the only one around me moving to the music. I thought I may have seen Ziggy the night I went (10/17), but I wasn't sure. I really like Ziggy!
