I have a feeling that Kayne West is going to be booed...

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Unbelievable. Talk about double standards. How is this thread any different from ones on other forums, articles online, in the press etc where people get VERY annoyed if they slag off U2 for no reason at all.

Is the average age on here about 10?

Why do they choose any of the opening acts? Because they like them, they respect them, they're popular at the moment, they're influential, they've been receiving rave reviews, U2 feel the exposure would do them good.

I'd suggest Kanye West fits into a few of those categories.

Besides, no matter who is the support act, some people will bitch about them, so why should it be any different for Kanye.

For some reason, because he's a "rapper" a lot of people have decided he's crap without giving him a chance, which is a very narrow minded thing to do IMHO.

Give the guy a chance and make up your own mind. If you are into your music seriously, you'll realise its ann oportunity to see what the fuss is about with an artitst who has made two of the most critically acclaimed hip hop records in recent memory.

I think that if you´re called U2, and you´re supposed to be a rock band, a rap singer just doesn´t fit a thing. It´s not about giving or giving not a chance, you can´t mix so much different styles together. If you´re supposed to have a rock audience by being a rock band, how can you awate that the audience appreciate?
If a rap singer can open for U2, then why not a folk music singer??
Why not a Brutal Metal band?? Why not a tenor??

I bet if you go back and look through who has supported U2 over the years you'd be surprised how many aren't run of the mill rock bands.

But like i said, no matter who they get to support them, some people always complain and bitch about them.

Look at the range of influences U2 quote - not all of them are rock bands.

It's the Buffy quote. Xander's reply is: "Ours is much more advanced."

Good catch! I was hoping someone would.

I thought it seemed somewhat inverted. We Whedon fans are a rare breed. :sexywink:

Yes, but this is the main problem of opening acts.
I went to Deep Purple and Pretenders were the opening band.........they were surrounded by boos, because everyone was impatient to see Deep Purple, and you don´t give a zero about the opening band (except if it´s red hot chili peppers at Slane)
You appreciate the bands or the singers in their own concerts, because there you have the audience that payed a ticket to see you. I can understand when people pipe down opening acts, because they´re not supposed to like them. If I want to see U2, i just want U2. If I want Pink Floyd, I want only them. If I want Rem, I want just them................that´s how it goes.
If I´d be a musician I would never be an opening act for no one, if I want to let people see and appreciate me, then I´d wait for them at my own concerts, where I know they pay to see me.

Umm, there is absolutely no reason why not. Why on earth should a U2 opening band be a bland rock band? Simply because a % of the audience will be narrow minded and dull? Personally I love it when the opening acts ARE completely different to the main act. Two completely different flavours.

Why on earth can't you mix different styles together? Do you only enjoy one style of music?

Quiet word of advice: Never start a band.

I enjoy many styles of music, but each in its place and in its contest

In the end
Why have U2 chosen Kanye West?????

Your posts indicate a slim knowledge of U2 history. You appear to be unaware of other opening acts for U2 in the past.

As to why U2 have chosen Kanye West, Kanye discussed it somewhere. He said that U2 and he made a connection at a recent awards show. (I forget which one.) He said that they each expressed mutual respect and admiration for each other's music.

Something that apparently many U2 fans wouldn't know how to do.

Just because I don´t like the binom U2-Kanye West means not that I´m unaware of other opening acts, or having even a slim knowledge about U2 history, what means that? How can you know it? How do you come to it?

The second part of your post is much more better, you gave an answer why they went for West...........................
But Respect is a thing, Appreciation an other
I pay respect to each one who produces a thing from his soul, but I´m not supposed to like it. Just because U2 admire him means not I must do it, too

fp, you just keep piling the sterotypes on, dontcha?

In Vancouver 8 of 10 people are hopelessly addicted to heroin.

And the other 2 of 10 operate illegal grow houses in their unfinished basements.

And here in Toronto, we carry semi-automatics and settle our differences at high noon in the streets.

:lmao:

Here's a little taste of the bass for you:

In Bracebridge, this small town I grew up in, I don't think there exists more than 6 permanent residents who are black (no exageration). In the summer, there may be a few vacationing families, but, again, they are far outnumbered.

Now, coming in to town this past summer (I still vacation up there and spend alot of time in July and August up there) what do you think I heard pumping out of all the kid's car stereos and at the one club they have?

Hint: It wasnt Triumph, The Hip, Van Halen, or any of your other stereotypical small town popular rock bands.

I think SLC will be juuuust fine

I tell you one thing, I don't care WHO is opening for U2. But if the person next to me is rude enough to boo them and interrupt me listening with an opening mind, I will tell them this:

SHUT THE FUCK UP OR GO HAVE A BEER

:)

(btw, KOL *DID* suck, but I didnt say so till I saw them live lol)

Because you say you don't think U2 should have hip-hop/rap acts open for them. They've had several open for them in the past. You sounded like you didn't know that.

there is no way in hell kanye will get booed. You are forgetting who has had the number one album for the past month in the states. and the cover of time. and a number of hit singles.

all the people i have talked to are jealous/disappointed that they had to sit through keane or dashboard confessional as a U2 opener, while I get to see Kanye.

the reaction goes like this:

yeah, dashboard opened...
oh, really, that's cool. I get to see kanye.
WHAT? You get to see KANYE? I hate you.

see. instant jealousy.

no way he is getting booed.

plus, if what you are saying is in reaction to his comments on television... well...

I don't think the majority of U2's audience are strict right winger conservatives.

I mean, that would be a bit ironic, wouldn't it, considering U2's affiliation with all things not right wing (i.e. Stop Sellafield, Green Peace, Amnesty International, Drop The Debt, plus all that Coexist stuff)...

the right wingers have a word for people like that. They call us "bleeding hearts".

doesn't make sense that they would make up the audience at a show performed by "Bleeding Hearts"

course, that's just my opinion.
also, keep in mind that U2 chose Kanye, and if he does get booed, the booers are essentially booing U2 for their choice of opener.

Well, indeed. In this case I was just referring to that particular, I know what for opening acts they had, and that many hip hop acts opened for them. I must say that, personnaly, it´s a coupling, the one between rock/hip hop,r & b, rap, that I don´t support, I´ve never liked those genres. When I saw U2 in Germany in 1997 a german hip hop called "Die Phantastischen 4" opened for them, I got so pissed off... As much as In Reggio Emilia and Rome where another electronic-rap band called "Casino Royale" opened for them, again, pissed off............
And I must actually say I wasn´t the only one in those oceanic crowds...........
What passed to U2 for opening act?
Pearl Jam. Kind of this genre is much better.
I think that there must be more connection(in means of genre) between the lead band and the openers. When I saw U2 in Milan this year Feeder and Ash opened, even though Ash sucked that couple passed to U2, because there was more genre relation. Maybe in America you have more predilection for hip hop because it was born in America, and it became a huge part of your music culture, and this is fair enough.
Probably it´s also true that I have a too big Rock Soul to appreciate Hip Hop

an act that defies the norms of his genre by speaking out and writing lyrics about war, poverty and God?

yea some of you are right... how could U2 possiably relate to an act like that..

and whoever said that Public Enemy was missing a member because Easy-E didn't show up? Easy-E was in N.W.A., straight outta compton.

Public Enemy, straight outta Long Island, is made up of Chuck D and... FLAAAAAAAAAVA FLAAAAAAAV
