Australia dates

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
No,
from what i've been reading, they usurally only announce the First and second legs...which will be Janurary 10.....If they are coming to australia in November - December , we'll find out by August...or later....

I dont have a link unfortunantly, but the Herald Sun HIT guide a few weeks back had a two paragraph article that stated Clear Channel (the promoters) would only confirm 8 dates in Australia due to "global demand". It was in the Dec 2 HIT guide if anyone still has it. Basically Clear Channel represents U2, and they then go through our normal promoters - Michael Chugg, Fronteir, Michael Coppel, Andrew Mc Manu etc. 8 dates are offered - however I'd imagine if the band wants to stay longer, they can add more.

So with a base of 8 - does that mean 3 shows in Melb and Syd, one in Brissy and Perth? Will Adelaide miss out? Will Perth miss out? Will both - with just an East coast run? I think personally 8 shows - and they have stated its an indoor tour - is stupid. They could probably sell out Rod Laver or the Entertainment Centre in Sydney 8 times.

Actually, I think we'll have stadiums - arenas on the US legs, stadiums elsewhere. I imagine that would mean two in Melbourne and Sydney, one in Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth, and one in Wellington.

Hmm..... let's take a look at U2's past touring history in Australia. Of course, in 1984 and 1989, their tours were huge sellers, because they were in arenas. I mean, in 89 they played 25 Australian shows in only 5 cities. But let's examine 1993 vs 1998 tours.

1993:
Sydney- 2 shows, 100,000 people, sold out
Melbourne- 2 shows, 75,000 people, sold out
Brisbane- 1 show, 50,000 people, sold out
Adelaide- 1 shows, -30,000 people, not sold out

1998:
Sydney- 1 show, 37,000 people, sold out
Perth- 1 show, 14,000 people, sold out
Brisbane- 1 show, same stadium, 17,000 people, not sold out!
Melbourne- 1 show, 17,000 people, not sold out.

Popmart did significantly worse in Australia. I don't know if it's just because it was such an unpopular tour, or if U2's popularity in Australia is severly waning down. I don't know if they'll even play New Zealand. They'd have a hard times selling out arenas in that country.

Maybe 8-10 arena shows in Australia would bode better. That was every show sells out, and everybody thinks U2 is more popular than they actually are.

This is the history of U2's concert business performance in Australia/New Zealand in terms of attendence.

assuming you mean 8-10 shows in Melbourne & Sydney....3 in Brisbane, 2 in Perth and Adeliade...

thats what will happen for arenas...and many many many people will still miss out...

as with stadiums
2 - Melbourne, Sydney
1 - Brisbane, Perth, Adeliade

Melbourne - the MCG will be done/almost done with re-development...meaning it can hold almost 100,000 People (130,000 without a stage ;) )

U2 havent been here for , what will be nearly 8 years by the time they get here....so the demand for tickets will High...

On the Aussie radio interview today, bono said they might stay indoors on the australian leg.....

so i could have been 100% wrong....

So if that goes ahead , they'll be spending all November and December here.....
They might get U2 at the Christmas Carols show next year :lmao:

here are the possible ? location of the Australia / New Zealand city's :

Perth , Burswood Dome , Australia

Sydney , Sydney Cricket Ground , Australia
Sydney , Aussie Stadium , Australia
Sydney , Telstra Stadium , Australia
Sydney , Sydney SuperDome , Australia

Brisbane , Suncorp Stadium (old ANZ Stadium), Australia

Adelaide , Adelaide Entertainment Centre , Australia
Adelaide , AAMI Stadium , Australia
Adelaide , Football Park , Australia

Melbourne , Melbourne Cricket Ground , Australia
Melbourne , Telstra Dome , Australia
Melbourne , Rod Laver Arena , Australia

Auckland , Western Springs Stadium , New Zealand

Christchurch , Jade Stadium , New Zealand
Christchurch , Lancaster Park , New Zealand

Wellington , Westpac Stadium , New Zealand

Well the article stated that Clear Channel had informed the shows here would be indoor - but then again the Sydney Superdome holds 20,000, and Telstra Dome in Melbourne is technically indoor... heh heh. Obviously if U2 decide the demand (which of course there is a huge demand) is enough to warrant additonal shows, we'll get them - but the deal offered to local promoters was 8 shows.

As for the Zoomerang Brisbane show - I was at ANZ Stadium and the far end stand was not full. the east and west stands were, the ground (general admin) was full, but the back stand wasn't despite lowered ticket prices - so I have no idea why it has been listed as sold out because there were alot of empty seats up the back.

Oh, also capacity at both MCG Zoomerang shows (as listed in Jimm's book) was just over 60,000 - meaning two sell outs is 120,000 people - not 75,000. The MCG in 1993 had a full capacity of 96,500 - Madonna and U2 both had similar stage areas (size wise - The Girlie Show was shithouse) and both drew 60,000+ crowds each night.

Just some corrections ...

Those are the same venue.

Brisbane , Suncorp Stadium (old ANZ Stadium), Australia

ANZ Stadium is still ANZ Stadium. Suncorp Stadium was Lang Park. ANZ is currently used for athletics and concerts.

Christchurch , Jade Stadium , New Zealand
Christchurch , Lancaster Park , New Zealand

They're the same venue. I'm still pissed that they changed Lancaster Park's name.

New Zealand , 3 X

Not a chance. Only 4 million people live in NZ. From what those I know back in NZ have said, major acts either play two shows (indoors in Auckland and Christchurch) or one show (stadium in Wellington).

Also, apparently on some interview on Kiwi radio, Edge hinted that U2 might not go to NZ. I haven't heard this for myself so I really don't know anything beyond there may have been such a hint.

As if they would play at Rod Laver Arena. They’ll probably play at the MCG, seeing it has been 6 years since they came to Melbourne.

Isnt the MCG an outdoor venue? U2 have said they will be playing indoors on this coming tour of Australia because we missed out on the indoor shows of the last tour.

Exactly - a number of sources now - including apparently Bono himself have confirmed indoor Australian shows. Which is a shame - but at the end of the day they have the right to play wherever they choose to. I hope that they look at Telstra Dome in melb as an indoor venue though!

Maybe they'll do a mixture of indoor and outdoor venues? I'd love to see them do the brand new Convention Centre here on the Gold Coast one night and then ANZ Stadium the next.

Actually, if U2 play indoors, I think there is an extremely high likelihood they will come to the Gold Coast. We have the newest venue in Australia and this city is the fastest-growing in the country. Last I heard, it's the fifth-biggest.

I'm just curious about population dispersion in Australia, but what's up north? If you look at maps, all of these cities are fairly towards the south.

What about cities up north? Darwin, etc? How big are those cities?

Just curious. :)

Darwins not big enough to get concerts, ever.

Perth (not north but SW) misses out a fair bit because of the huge distace from the rest of the country. As you say most of the population live in the SE corner of the country.

Hobart misses out on a lot as well.

How many cities are there? Six?

Heh, plenty more than that. Here's my rough guess of population rankings ...

1. Greater Sydney (inc. Woollongong and Newcastle)
2. Melbourne
3. Brisbane
4. Perth
5. Gold Coast/Tweed Heads
6. Adelaide
7. Canberra
8. Hobart
9. Darwin
10. Cairns

Odds are that the top six are the only ones likely to receive U2 shows. I'm surprised they didn't play Hobat on Lovetown. It's the perfect place to perform Van Diemen's Land!

The major centres across the north are Broome, Darwin, Mount Isa, Cairns, and Townsville. In the Northern Territory, the other major centres are Alice Springs and Katherine (Oh, and I think Tennant Creek too). Absolutely no chance any of them will receive concerts.

Those are the same venue.
Actually Aussie stadium (formally known as the Sydney Football Stadium) seats 42,000 and is located in moore park near redfern just south of sydney.

Telstra Stadium (or known as the olympic stadium) seats 81,500 and is located at homebush near Parramatta in Sydneys west

Okay, I reckon that we will see the following IF the shows are indoor and IF we get 8 shows:

1. 3 x Sydney
2. 2 x Melbourne
3. 1 x Brisbane (maybe two if the first sells out quickly)
4. 1 x either Perth or Adelaide

I guess it will be determined by (a) the cost, (b) the actual show and how big the whole thing becomes to move, hence my guess that it will be unlikely that the show would move from Brisbane to the Gold Coast.... and, of course (c) ticket sales.
