Mexican Press

‘Azteca Stadium was shaken from the grass by the huge seduction and passionate Irish Band.’

OK, maybe our translation is not quite perfect but this headline from Ovaciones newspaper perfectly captures the reception the band received in Mexico this past week.

‘A beautiful moon appeared in the sky and it was a silent witness of the amazing night where a couple of lovers U2- Mexico - swear forever love.’

We couldn’t have put it better ourselves.

‘People screamed and jumped in a way to show the impatience they have had during an eight year expectation for the band, ‘ wrote the reviewer in another title, Marcador, who was pleased to note that the locals never completely mislaid their composure. ‘Although people was extremely excited, control was never lost.’ (Out of Control was not on the set list as it happens.)

In La Prensa, the writer was euphoric about the second show in Mexico City: ‘More than 70,000 fans were in ecstasies with each song.’ ran the headline. ‘I’ll need more than this space to express all the feelings that we lived last night at the Azteca Stadium on the second U2 show. Everything happened and the fans went home with a message of peace.’

El Universal reported that the ‘Mexican audience has been so loyal and warm with international artists, that now they are trying to feed back this love by shrinkwrapping audiences in their democratic process.’ This was by way of applauding U2 for supporting the ‘Rock The Vote’ campaign and airing the logo during the show. ‘It's wonderful for us,’ explained one of the campaigners. ‘That someone as Bono, with such influence, supports our work.’

So, some great reviews from a week of shows in Mexico but the last word must go to Ovaciones again – and please excuse our translation if we have been less than precise:
‘Uno, dos, tres, fourteen! multiplied to the infinite, Mexico responded a huge ‘Hello, Hello’ to open his heart to four Irish men full of rage and love, that strange combination that rock and roll has and that yesterday went further than Vertigo.’
