Vertigo felt out of place at Live 8...

I think the set they picked was perfect really...

I mean, sure Streets has the Africa association, but I don't think that in opening the show what they wanted was to sort of take us there in that way. Nor would it have been best, I think, to do a protest/civil unrest song. Beautiful Day was ideal imho. And Vertigo was a great middle-song choice...known, current, rockin' and relevant. And how could they close on anything but One?

As I recall the coverage I saw (at least on first try...still haven't watched my tape of the do-over the following saturday!) of Coldplay, it was quite a lot of Gwyneth smiling weirdly (and not really seeming to react to the show as a show) with Apple in those cute hotpink ear-protection headphones.

I don't think that playing vertigo had ANYTHING to do with selling the new album.

They chose three songs they knew that most of the audience would know, and two they knew would get the crowd buzzing.
