The concert WILL start and end with a HTDAAB song. There's no reason not to.

I guarantee you the starter will be Vertigo. An probably LAPOE in 2nd.

Now, the thing here is the ender song. I promise you it won't be Walk On, or 40, or anything else not from HTDAAB.

Yahweh is a definite possibility. I can see Bono screaming out a hallelujah at the end of this one.

But my pick for set closer is Crumbs From Your Table.

It's got a vibe similar to Walk On, it's got the political message that I'd think the boys would want to leave fans with, and just think of the atmosphere this would leave on the way out!!

I agree completely. Closing with 40 or walk on is taking a step back and U2 in the 90's and on has been about pushing forward. I'm hoping maybe they will close with a different old song every night. that would be a nice touch, but atleast for the first leg or so it will be a new song.

as for everything in between, i have no idea. isnt it amazing how much quality material U2 has to choose from?? most bands save and play their hits at the end of the show. at a U2 concert the entire setlist is a hit.

I actually think they may use Yahweh/40 to close. There's multiple songs on this album that would work very nicely with 40 at the end. Face it, they're going to return to 40 at some point in their careers - that's what the entire bloody crowd sings when calling for an encore! I don't see why they won't return to it now. After all, they did it four times on Popmart and then once at the Astoria promo gig in 2001.

DAMN, I like that. Only two things I'm not sure about;

1. LAPOE/Gloria/ES. Of course, that could work fine, but I would be tempted to swap Gloria for Gone.
2. MLK --> LAPOE. Don't get me wrong, I quite like your idea to flow the two songs together, but I'm just not sure if it works thematically. "May your dreams be realised tonight," "lay down your guns"? I'm also not sure if I can really see MLK following LNOE.

I think you're spot on with SYCMIOYO, though I'd be tempted to include both songs or make it a medley rather than simply snippeting Bad (just because I LOVE Bad). My sole concern with that portion of the set is HMTMKMKM/SYCMIOYO. The glam-rock of HMTMKMKM doesn't really seem to flow with the softer beginning of SYCMIOYO. Did you have some sort of transition in mind here, some way it could work like Bullet/RTSS?

If U2 do choose to play Walk On again, I will be very interested to see in what context it is played. We are all very used to it as a closing song - it's hard to even imagine it between two songs, or at least for me. That said, it works nicely where it is. I'm desperately hoping that Yahweh/40 really does close.

One other concern is that perhaps the main set is a bit long, just by one or two songs. I'd alleviate that by cutting down the acoustic set and then adding another encore (probably between the main set and the one you already have). Or maybe U2 will return to playing just one encore ... hm, no, I don't think that's likely.

(Also, don't you think there should be a little bit more representation of JT and AB?)

(Can you tell I feel 40 is the one and only U2 setlist closer? It works at the end of bloody ANYTHING.)

For this set, imagine 1-7 flowing together perfectly as follows ...

COBL's outro slows, slows ... slows ... slows ... then the background washes red, the synth blasts out, and Edge flows into the intro. At the end, Edge again slows and gradually morphs into All I Want Is You, which is played straight into Bad (a la 20 October 1989, Sydney). These two songs could be played either way and I originally had Bad/AIWIY, but thematically, AIWIY/Bad is one to turn every thinking member of their audience on their heads. Then at the end of Bad, the song morphs into One Tree Hill, and after that, as Bono is singing "oh great ocean, oh great sea," Adam begins his sinister bass and begins a sinister jam with Edge that slowly rumbles into the all-out rock of Exit. When Exit comes to its conclusion, after the obligatory snippet of Van Morrison's Gloria, Edge plays on, beginning the mournful live intro to Hawkmoon.

And that's pretty much it. Imagine that in your head. I just about lost control of myself. This is why I design my setlists. Imagining this stuff is my high.
