U2 set for December return
By Christine Sams
U2 are likely to return to Australia in December, say British sources close the band. While the Australian tour promoters remain tight-lipped about plans for the rescheduled U2 tour, it seems the Irish supergroup is definitely in the planning stages for a return visit.
A well-connected London source has told S "it looks as though it will be in December". He couldn't give away too much more, but said dates were slowly being locked in for some time before Christmas.
But if the Aussie promoters know anything about the December dates, they're not giving anything away just yet. "We're still waiting to hear from them," said a spokeswoman for promoter Michael Coppel.
Since the shock postponement of U2's Vertigo shows in March, Australian fans have been continually asking the question "when are they coming back?"
It's obviously an awkward question for the band, given that lead guitarist The Edge is dealing with a very troubling family crisis, believed to be a serious illness affecting his daughter.
For anyone (famous or not), of course the welfare of family takes priority.
But with tens of thousands of fans holding on to tickets - not only in Australia, but also in New Zealand and Japan - U2 are under pressure to reveal when (and if) the tour is going to take place.
Bono, in an interview in Australia in March, told Andrew Denton the new dates would be revealed the following day.
Two months later, at the time of writing, there was still no word.
As well as Australian tour promoters studiously avoiding the topic, there is no mention of the postponed tour on the official U2 website.
But the news from our London source is a much-needed boost for U2's local fans.
If our man close to U2's management camp is correct, the band will definitely be back before the year is out.
