April is here! Do you know what that means? It's time for the African Well Fund's second annual Bono birthday fundraiser, which will continue throughout the month of April.
Last year's fundraiser was such a success that they decided to make it an annual thing. Last year they raised more than $10,000. Based on this incredible response, the group has set this year's fundraising goal to $15,000.
"We realize that last year our goal was only $1,000," said Julie cook, public relations contact for the AWF. "With that in mind, we have set our goal to $15,000 thinking that U2 fans can and will give again this year."
Since the organization's inception in early 2003 the group has raised enough funds to build over 16 wells and other water improvement projects in Africa, mostly in Uganda where they found the need to be the highest.
According to Cook, the average number of villagers served by the wells is approximately 400-450 people. "For each well project that is built, that many people gain access to clean water," she said.
The money raised during this year's birthday fund will go to well projects in Ethiopia. Africare, the non-profit organization the AWF works with to make these projects a reality in Africa informed them of the current critical need there.
