For the first time in its 17-year history, the Irish Hospice Foundation (IHF) has sponsored an art, book and CD project to be published and shown outside of Ireland, a modern take on Sergei Prokovlev's children's classic Peter & The Wolf. The book/CD combination features music by Gavin Friday and Maurice Seezer plus 16 original illustrations by Bono and his daughters, Jordan and Eve Hewson.

Prior to this, the foundation produced two other very successful fundraising items in Ireland: Art Pack, a pack of playing cards designed by 54 Irish artists; and The Whosday Book, a diary featuring the work of 366 artists, writers and celebrities. The two projects raised over 4 million (Irish pounds) combined according to the foundation.

Founded by Dr. Mary Redmond in 1986, the IHF was formed in response to a need to improve care services for terminally ill people in Ireland. For its first project the organization raised approximately 1.6 million (Irish pounds) for an education center at Our Lady's Hospice in Harold's Cross, Dublin.

The IHF next set about answering the need for hospice care on the north side of Dublin. Home hospice care service began from a portacabin on land donated by Capuchin Fathers in Raheny. According to the foundation, approximately 1.3 million (Irish pounds) were raised in 1996 to build St. Francis Hospice, a day-care center with a 19-bed unit for in-patient care. IHF support was also made available to Marymount Hospice in Cork and Milford Hospice in Limerick with a grant of approximately 250,000 (Irish pounds).

Aside from hospice and home care, the IHF has comprehensive bereavement support and research services. The IHF has also raised research funds totaling approximately 300,000 (Irish pounds) since 1993 to provide vital information on better ways to provide for terminally ill people and their families.

Hospice professionals are awarded grants by IHF to train in specific areas of hospice care and bereavement services. Although some funding goes toward research training and equipment such as data analysis software, the main focus is on psychological and health services. The IHF also works with other research entities such as the Education & Research Forum of the Irish Association of Palliative Care and a research sub-group of the Association of Consultants in Palliative medicine in Ireland.

The IHF recently opened a library, information and resource center with specialists focusing on bereavement services and other areas. The foundation is also working on funding for the appointment of Ireland's first clinical Nurse Specialist in Pediatric Palliative Care at Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin, Ireland. IHF already funds part of the hospital's Oncology Nursing Liaison Services, a nationwide service for children with cancer who are being taken care of at home.

Other IHF projects include joint funding with the Department of Health of a nationwide assessment of hospice needs for children. The development of a new course in accredited universities for graduate degrees in bereavement studies is underway with the first class scheduled to take place in 2004. The funding of a three-year research fellowship in partnership with the state agency, the Health Research Board, is also a current focus of the IHF.
