"I got married when I was young so it definitely was not planned. I just met this extraordinary woman who turned my whole life upside down." ? Bono to ShowBiz Ireland, Dec. 2001

Their lifelong friendship is legendary, their love an unqualified success. The wedding of Paul Hewson to Alison Stewart is an event revered by most U2 fans for it is undoubtedly one of the most meaningful and cherished days in Bono's life. Today is their 22nd anniversary.

Bono met Ali on her first day at Mount Temple Comprehensive School in 1976 and was immediately attracted to her. She had a quiet charm and a strong yet gentle spirit that spoke to Bono's heart. Still greatly feeling the loss of his mother, Iris, two years earlier, Bono found in Ali a true friend and confidante. She would help Bono to get through the chores of everyday life and provided him with the close human connection that Bono craved.

Bono and Ali married on August 21, 1982 at the Old Guinness Church in Raheny, Ireland. With Adam Clayton as Bono's best man, the happy couple was surrounded by friends and family gathered together to partake in this very special occasion. Bono jokingly tells the story of how he was almost late for his own wedding due to the difficulty he had in wading through the number of well-wishers congregated around the church.

During their marriage, the couple has consistently supported each other?s interests and endeavors. Ali accompanied Bono to an Ethiopian refugee camp for a nearly two month stay in 1985, and Bono supported Ali's educational goals as she pursued her college education, graduating in 1989 with a Social Science degree concentrating on political science and sociology. Ali gave birth to their first daughter, Jordan, two weeks before she received her degree.

The early '90s would see Ali remain committed to her marriage and growing family (second daughter Eve was born in 1991) during the tumultuous ZooTV/Zooropa years. Bono would reciprocate his gratitude and love for Ali by devoting as much of his time as possible to his family and by supporting Ali's growing social activism against the dangers of nuclear radiation with his, and U2's, involvement in the Shut Sellafield Campaign.

Always an integral part of each other's lives they toured the war zones of Sarajevo and participated in the beginnings of the international Jubilee movement (now Drop the Debt) together. Bono has continued his activism in the Global AIDS movement and for Africa's Future through DATA while Ali has become deeply involved in the Chernobyl Children's Project. Both remain devoted parents to their four children (sons Elijah and John were born in 1999 and 2001) and committed to each other.

TWO HEARTS BEAT AS ONE. :bono:   ;)

Hope Bono and Ali's day was the BEST yet!

They TRULY are the SWEETEST THING.....

Hope their next year is full of more LUMINOUS TIMES.

Bonos marriage to Ali could have so easily fallen by the wayside like so many singers marriages do. Its hard to believe that they met at school. Long may their happiness continue!
