Sorry if this is answered somewhere, I poked around but I can't find it. I've lurked here off and on for several years, participated in many a set list party or game thread that has passed 500 posts and been closed for a new thread. I get that it has to happen, my question is why? bandwith of large threads or something?

This was what Elvis posted to us awhile back (2004 I think):

Hi all...

I've determined part of the problem with the server lately....

Basically the time it takes for the database to try to pull up threads with 900-1000+ replies takes too long... and slows the entire server down... some of the threads I closed/moved has TENS OF THOUSANDS of replies... so you can imagine what kind of havoc they were causing.

Basically... from this point forward (until further notice) threads should be closed at around 500-600 posts.

It's either this... or let the server be slow as lava and continually get worse.

Thanks,

Joel

From the FAQs/Rules

If the thread has over 500 replies, it may be closed due to server issues. Large threads are taxing to the database. Each time a large thread is opened/accessed or viewed it can put a strain the server.
