ok this has been driving me nuts so finally i broke down and had to ask...
what are the little 'names' above the avatar? for instance, mine says "the fly", others say "acrobat" or "refugee" etc. etc. does it signal how many posts a person has made? i'm totally clueless but curious.

Yes, it goes by how many posts you make.

Here is the list..

The Fly (Minimum Posts: 30)
