Cruzila and Zootlesque, I'm so sorry we didn't have longer to talk, but it was a pleasure meeting you!
Same w. you Headache, I never seem to get to talk to you!
Abby & Ewen, I'm soooo glad you were able to make it, even for a short time. It was great seeing you again.
If you can believe it, the only pics I took the entire weekend were one of Abby & Ewen, and two of a potbellied pig eating a pumpkin!
It was quite a weekend. A little TOO tiring unfortunately. I had been planning on taking a 7:30am bus so I could arrive by noon and have a good half day to run around NYC.
Unfortunately the bus people insist on having you arrive an hour early, and the subway doesn't open in DC on the weekend until 7!
So I had to stay in a hotel the night before so I could catch my bus. It was a GREAT hotel, but unfortunately I couldn't have their lovely breakfast because I had to catch my bus!
So....I got to the bus station, thinking I'd have a great strong coffee, maybe a latte or something. HAHAHAHA!!!! NO WAY. I got some weak dishwater coffee with powdered creamer.
I should have known better.
So, I sit down to wait for my bus.....for an hour......and it turns out they decided they weren't going to have my bus at all! No explanation. After getting loaded onto an 8:00 bus, then off and onto another bus that left at 8:15, we were finally on our way.
I met the smiling and happy Kelly at 1pmish. We checked in and decided to go out for a great NY lunch in a cool deli somewhere. Nuh uhhhhh. It was POURING and we had no umbrella. So, we had lunch in the hotel restaurant....$17 for a club sandwich, and if you wanted fries with that it would be $3.30 extra!!!!!
I am sorry, but that is OUTRAGEOUS!!!! The waitress just laughed.
So we eat our lunch and go for a looooooooooong walk. By this time the rain had cleared. We spent the day wandering up 5th Ave. We figured since we only had a few hours, we wouldn't go to a museum because we would want to spend more time. So, we went to the central pk zoo instead.
We had a great time at the zoo, they had some nice animals, but we spent most of our time staring at the pigs and the cow!! Imagine, going all the way to NYC to look at a cow!!!
By the time we walked all the way back again (from 33rd/8th to 67th/5th & back) we were dog tired and had a nap.
We got up just in time to get ready to meet Abby & Ewen. We had a wonderful time catching up with them. The people at Lucille's gave us a blue ticket which would allow us into BB King's. The doors were supposed to open at 11, and the band start at 11:30. No problem. They start lining us up and we wait...and wait.......
Now this is entirely MY fault, but I decided to wear boots with heels. BIG MISTAKE. After pounding the pavement all day, these shoes (which have no padding/shock absorption) were KILLING my feet. So standing and waiting was really agonizing.
Finally at around 11:45 they let us in. The front row is already taken up by UF's considerable contingent of male fans. We take our place in the 2nd row. By the time the band takes the stage some time after 12, I am half dead on my feet.
Anyway, some of you know I am the belly dancer in Elevation Canada. I have seen a variety of U2 tributes in my time, but never UF so I was very curious. I think they put on an excellent show. I think I would have enjoyed it even more if:
a) my feet weren't throbbing and burning
b) if I'd had more sleep
c) if I'd had a couple of drinks - I didn't dare leave my spot to get a drink for fear of losing it to one of the VERY enthused male fans, a couple of whom were quite drunk and kept shoving us out of the way which was very annoying.
But as I said, it was a great show. I particularly enjoyed Mick the guitarist.
The whole band are excellent musicians and although I am tired of the greatest hits, I know all tributes have to play them. I LOVED Unforgettable Fire, One Tree Hill, Party Girl (I forget what the snippet at the end was, but it fit very well), Bad and ESPECIALLY When Love Comes to Town with the guest from BB King's. That was fantastic.
The only thing about the show that I really didn't care for was MW, and that is no fault of the band's.
I think it's great to have a bunch of girls on stage, having fun, being sensual etc. But some of the girls were literally turning into a porn star competition. It was WAY over the top, and quite cringe-worthy. Maybe too much alcohol was involved, who knows...but all the crotch stroking, gyrating and attempts to hump the band were really off putting to me.
But like I said, I had sore feet so my patience was tested to the max.
Next time guys, if you'd like a guest belly dancer, I'd be happy to oblige.
So again, great show guys, please consider playing in DC!!! I'm sure you'd sell out.
So after the show, Kelly and I hobbled home, and crashed into bed. I got on my bus (which left on time but got home late due to being snarled in traffic). Needless to say, I went to bed early last night!
Thanks for a great weekend, everyone!
