I had asked her to drive out with me from this side. As it turns out, I'm not going to be able to make it because I'm having another surgery just a few days before.

I was out at the tree earlier this year, it's a nice trip. I have plans to be in Death Valley next month so I'm thinking of seeing it again then.

I was there in early May.

It wasn't exactly freezing but the wind was COLD.

I would also swear I've seen pictures of the tree with snow on it

It's about 4000 feet or so. I was there one February and we froze our butts off.

A picnic will work if you stop at the Visitor's Center at the turnoff near Lone Pine, or at Coso Junction. The area around the tree may not work for a picnic at all.

I must have got lucky in Jan. then. It was pleasant and even warm by noon-one-ish.

Dressing in layers is always the smartest way to go when not too sure about the weather.
