(08-09-2006) Scissor Sisters Show to Benefit Global Fund -- The Evening Standard*

Scissor Sisters Show to Benefit Bono's Global Fund Charity

The Scissor Sisters are set to perform a free open-air concert in Trafalgar Square.

The flamboyant US glam-rock band have been given permission by Ken Livingstone to take over the square next month.

About 10,000 free tickets will be put up for grabs in a text lottery on Friday.

Final confirmation is dependent on an agreement between the Mayor and Westminster council but a source told the Standard it was just a matter of sorting out the fine details.

This will be the second major free concert the square has hosted after David Gray and Morcheeba performed there in 2003. Since then the Mayor has put on a series of free events, including the Pet Shop Boys performing the soundtrack to the film Battleship Potemkin and two parties to celebrate London's 2012 Olympics victory.

The Scissor Sisters, famed for their outrageous costumes and hits including Mary and Take Your Mama, are currently on tour in America promoting their second album Ta-Dah.

The gig, due to take place on Saturday 16 September at 6pm, will follow their appearance at the "Bestival" in the Isle of Wight the previous weekend.

Profits from the text lottery will go to the Global Fund, the charity championed by U2 frontman Bono for its work tackling the AIDS epidemic in Africa.

A Scissor Sisters source told The Sun: "The Scissor Sisters were really keen to put on something special. They made moves to get Trafalgar Square for a big free concert but Westminster council weren't too keen. Ken intervened because he thought it was a great event."

But a Westminster council spokesman denied the Mayor had to step in. "Ken Livingstone has not personally intervened to speed up the application," he said. "We are working to an agreed timeline."

The Scissor Sisters are one of the better live acts I've ever seen.

I'm all for U2 related news but this is quite the stretch. Ok, sure the Scissor Sisters are a good band, the proceeds go to a worthy cause like fighting AIDS, but really, does this have anything to do with U2?

We post what we can find related to ONE, DATA, Project (Red) and Music Rising because of their connection to the guys in U2 and this story falls into that category.
