Bono to Receive Civil Rights Award

"PA"

Irish rocker Bono is to receive a US National Civil Rights Museum Freedom Award.

The museum, built on the site in Memphis, Tennessee, where Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated, gives two Freedom Awards every year to people who have worked to advance civil rights.

U2 frontman Bono, who is receiving the museum?s ?international award? on October 18, had championed social justice with his music and activism, the museum said.

This year?s other award recipient is US House of Representatives politician John Lewis, who ?has maintained an unfailing, principled commitment to the ideals of equality and justice?.

Past recipients include civil rights pioneer Rosa Parks, former South African president Nelson Mandela and former US president Jimmy Carter.

This really is inspiring news. If you go to the museum's website, they give a list of other past recipients such as Bill Clinton, Colin Powell, Lech Walesa and Desmond Tutu. A very prestigious group!

If you are in the Memphis area, you can purchase tickets for the awards ceremony and banquet. Former U.S. Pres. Bill Clinton came last year to accept his award, so I'm sure Bono will be there to accept his as well (maybe a stop on the album promotion tour?). The number is (901) 521-9699, ext. 237 or e-mail freedomaward@civilrightsmuseum.org.

Tickets are $50 for general admission and $150 for for individual seating a the banquet and awards ceremony.

I agree with everyone - this is ANOTHER GREAT AWARD for Bono!

Bono has a lifetime of demonstrating his Love and Respect for African People, no matter where they are in the diaspora. He has risked popularity to do the RIGHT THING - to speak out consistently and unrelentlessly for the right of Africans to be treated with Equality and Justice and to ensure a POSITIVE FUTURE for the People of the Mother Continent of Humanity.

I can't wait for this event - it promises to be as good as The King Center's Salute to Greatness Awards Ceremonies last January!

THE GOAL IS SOUL....:bono:

another feather

Bono is so deserving of this award. The man simply has conscience and concern for the world's problems and more importantly puts "conscience" into the world leaders' conscience. The man deserves a Nobel. Praise you Bono! Make Asia your visit next time whether for humanitarian or musical purposes. Even tourism purposes. You are always welcome here. Please visit us your Asian fans. Make Manila your first stop!
