U2 at 25: How to Build a Lasting Career

Twenty-five years can take a lot out of a band. But in the case of U2, the passage of time seems only to have added to their vitality.

A quarter century into their history, the Irish foursome are recording and performing more melodically sure, and lyrically full songs than they did at the start.

They'll try to prove it again [tonight] at Madison Square Garden, where much of the repertoire will likely draw on recent material. (Sets do vary slightly night by night.)

At the band's concert in Philadelphia last weekend, they balanced valiant music with high-minded lyrics that never veered into bombast or preachiness.

True, Bono's speechifying can get windy, and he's likely to offer more of it in this, the media vortex. But the power of the music grounds him, and the band's ability to keep evolving can forgive most anything.
