Build a Well for Bono’s Birthday Fundraiser Grand Total

Ed. Note: Congratulations to everyone at the African Well Fund and all of you who took part in this year's fundraiser for Bono's birthday on coming together to not only give Bono an amazing gift but also heping better the lives of people in Africa.

The African Well Fund is thrilled to announce the grand total for the 4th Annual Build a Well for Bono’s Birthday fundraiser. U2 fans from around the world have contributed a grand total of $32,051.43!!!!

The response to this year’s appeal was fantastic! Sales of the special Bono Birthday Well t-shirt raised over $600 towards the total and the U2 concert photo auction accounted for over a third of the total, raising over $11,000.

Donations were received from U2 fans all over the world, including Canada, Mexico, Australia, Germany, England, Denmark, Hungary, Brazil, France, Greece, Italy, Japan, Czech Republic, Ireland, Sweden and Bosnia & Herzegovina. The money raised will be used to implement an Integrated Community Water and Sanitation project in Zimbabwe that will provide clean water and improved sanitation for 2000 people. The signatures and birthday greetings collected from our online
birthday card will be sent to Bono along with a certificate announcing the total amount raised.

The African Well Fund would like to thank all who contributed for your generous support. Fans have now contributed more than $80,000 for clean water projects during the Bono Birthday appeals and the African Well Fund has raised more than $175,000 since its inception! Your donations have had a significant impact on the lives of many Africans.

BONO BIRTHDAY FUNDAISER RAISES OVER $32,000!

Schenectady, NY – May 20th, 2006 – The African Well Fund is excited to announce the grand total for the 4th annual “Build a Well for Bono’s Birthday” fundraising event. U2 fans from around the world donated a total of $32,051.43! The donations were collected in honor of Bono for his May 10th birthday and will be used to fund water projects in Zimbabwe.

For the fourth year in a row, the African Well Fund appealed to U2 fans inspired by Bono’s tireless activism on behalf of Africa, to make a donation in his honor. Once again fans responded generously. Donations were collected from March 22nd through May 6th. As with the previous “Build a Well for Bono’s Birthday” events, donations were received from all over the world, including Canada, Mexico, Australia, Denmark, Hungary, Brazil and Bosnia & Herzegovina. A significant portion of the total was raised through an Ebay auction of U2 concert photos. U2 fan photographers donated nearly 100 photos. The auction brought in more than $11,000!

Donations from the previous birthday fundraisers totaled more than $50,000 and were used to finance water projects in Uganda, Ethiopia and Angola. This year, the funds raised will be used for a project in Zimbabwe. The donations will be used to implement an Integrated Community Water and Sanitation project. The project will provide 2000 beneficiaries with safe, clean water and improved sanitation. The total cost of the project is $50,000. The African Well Fund is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization that was founded in 2002 by a group of U2 fans. Since that time, AWF has raised more than $175,000, which has been used to fund more than 40 clean water projects in sub-Saharan Africa. All donations to the African Well Fund go directly to Africare, one of the leading private, non-profit, charitable organizations assisting Africa. The African Well Fund was founded to focus on one achievable goal: providing access to clean water to everyone in Africa. The African Well Fund believes that access to water is not merely a basic human need but a basic human right.
