Bob Geldof Honored With IRMA

Irish Music Legend and former Boomtown Rat Bob Geldof received top music award when he was honoured with an IRMA at the weekend and an accolade from his old pal Bono.

It seems 2006 is finally the year that Bob Geldof is recognised on home soil for his contribution to music and his global humanitarian campaigns.

Only one month ago Sir Bob was bestowed with The Freedom of Dublin City Award and at the weekend he was presented with an Honorary IRMA award by Dave Fanning.

For those unaware of Mr. Geldof musical achievements he is credited with putting Ireland on the musical map, was a fore-runner for a new genre of music- New Wave and was responsible for Irelands' first ever number one Irish hit in the UK with Rat Trap - not bad!

And according to his mate Bono at the ceremony - he was also the inspiration for the U2 frontman's renowned confidence while entertaining his tens-of-thousands of fans in the world's biggest stadia.

According to Willie Kavanagh , chairman IRMA: "It was a unanimous decision by Irma this year to honour Bob and his contribution to music. He is a legend both nationally and internationally. We are delighted to be able to honour Bob tonight."

The party at Citywest started off with a Video tribute to Geldof with participants: Bono, Ronnie Drew, Mick Jagger, Christy Moore, Gaye Byrne, Daniel Ryan from The Thrills, fellow band member Pete Briquette, Phil Chevron, Barry Devlin, Shane McGowan, Larry Gogan, Gavin Friday, Dustin, Leslie Dowdall, Annie Lennox, Elton John Sting and Pete Townsend. An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern also sent a message of goodwill to the rock star.

Always up for a song Bob performed 10 songs at the IRMA's including: Indifferent, Banana Republic, I Don't Like Mondays and Rat Trap.

The charities which benefited on the night were: Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children Crumlin, The Chernobyl Children's Project and IRMA Trust.

Numerous Stars, plus Bob's friends and family, attended the ceremony.

And although Bono showed up for the red carpet element of the IRMAs he dashed off after about 30 minutes to his waiting car.
