Here is where ATYCLB is charting around the world in week 87/88:

Ireland #53
Canada #98
United States #153

Total sales in the USA for the past week were 7,752 giving ATYCLB a grand total of 3,913,393 copies sold in the USA. Total worldwide sales for the past week were 9,056. ATYCLB worldwide total since release now stands at 10,938,657!

Hey STING

Is there any chance that ATYCLB will stay on the Top 200 long enough for it to be certified as 4X Platinum i.e. is there anything on teh horizon that might lead to a rising in the chart for this album?

Also, if it DOES fall out of the charts before it reaches 4X platinum, will the release of the "Best Of" boost ATYCLB towards the top of the Catalogue Charts, helping it to pas 4 million albums?

Thanks.

WHYWHY.

I don't believe that ATYCLB will remain long enough on the top 200 for us to see a 4x's platinum certification. And I am very glad about this because I think the public really needs a U2 break, especially if the rumour about there being a new single in October and best of in November are true.

What you have to remember now is that ATYCLB has sold enough over the counter to easily be certified 4x's platinum when U2's label/management decides to do a re-certification. So we can all rest easy on that. So it's not that they need some boost in sales to reach the 4 million mark, they just need to get it certified again.

I don't really think that Best of will boost sales of ATYCLB. In my opinion it's a horrible idea to have the ATYCLB singles included on this best of. Everyone who would buy the Best Of for these latest singles has already just bought ATYCLB! If they are included, it may in fact decrease the sales of ATYCLB because the big singles are included on the best of.

So - there are 4 million copies of ATYCLB out there, the question is now, will it ever hit 5 million? :)

Hello,

Things are not looking good for U2 on the Dutch album charts. ATYCLB is out of the charts for some weeks now and it looks as if The Best Of 1980-1990 will also drop out of the charts. In the 10th week of its 11th chart run the album drops 28 places to 95. In total, the album has charted for 129 weeks.
Here is the total run (its 11th chart run):
93-66-55-55-49-46-52-52-67-95

Hopefully the album can stay on the charts for a few more weeks, but it does not look very promising.

C ya!

Marty

Rebound?

Before we see DoctorWho's data tomorrow, anyone want to guess which way ATYCLB will go? Last week, it seemed to drop to new lows. So will it:
  1. drop just a bit lower this week?
  2. drop a lot lower this week?
  3. remain constant?
  4. see a little rebound?
  5. see a huge rebound?
My prediction is for a little rebound. Or maybe I'm just hoping too much. :)

It seems that those on Zootopia were not very receptive to chart/sales news. Therefore, although I have lost my desire to post in other forums here for the moment, I thought I would update this week's U.S. chart and sales news here on Interference, where a far more receptive fan base exists. :)

Week 88 U.S. Chart News

Since Week 80 of ATYCLB?s release in the U.S., ATYCLB has bounced between #107 and 153 on the U.S. charts, with sales fluctuating by as much as 2,800 copies between weeks.
  • In Week 81, ATYCLB dropped to #119 on the U.S. Billboard charts (down from #107 the week before) and sold 9,321 copies, down from 11,712 copies the week prior (Week 80).
  • In Week 82, the album dropped to #131, the lowest chart position it had ever been in the U.S. at that time. However, its sales remained very steady, even increasing ever so slightly, to 9,353 copies.
  • In Week 83, there was a mini-rebound as the album bounced up to #118 on the U.S. Billboard charts. It also increased slightly in sales to 9,415 copies.
  • In Week 84, the album dropped again down to #130 with a mere 8,164 copies sold. This was the lowest weekly sales for the album in the U.S. at the time.
  • In Week 85, the album bounced back up to #117, the highest position it has held since Week 80, with sales of 10,947 copies - an increase of almost 2,800 copies!
  • In Week 86, ATYCLB dropped to #135, a new low. Sales for the week were 8,589 copies, down almost 2,400 copies from the week prior.
  • In Week 87 there were yet two new lows. ATYCLB dropped to #153 on the U.S. charts with sales of only 7,752 copies.
With ATYCLB reaching both new lows in chart position and weekly sales in the U.S., was it nearing the end of it's run on the U.S. charts? What was in store for Week 88?

I'm happy to report, there was a mini-rebound. The album improved to #142 with sales of 8,411 copies, an increase of almost 700 copies. While this is not a dramatic jump, it once again shows that ATYCLB is not going to plummet from the U.S. charts as "Pop" and "Zooropa" did.

Chart Summary for United States

The first 88 weeks for ATYCLB on the U.S. Billboard charts are:

3-5-12-22-23-24-20(1xP)-18-22-16

"POP" was out of the Top 100 after 19 weeks and "Zooropa" was out of the Top 100 after 31 weeks. ATYCLB fell out of the Top 100 after 40 weeks, however, it had returned for an additional 34 weeks.

ATYCLB spent 74 out of 88 total weeks in the U.S. Top 100; 30 weeks in the U.S. Top 40; and 3 weeks in the U.S. Top 10.

Approximate weekly sales for the first 88 weeks of ATYCLB are (rounded to nearest thousand):

428,000 + 176,000 + 119,000 + 125,000 + 100,000 + 113,000 + 154,000 + 259,000 + 108,000 + 66,000 + 59,000 + 57,000+ 47,000 + 44,000 + 41,000 + 49,000 + 85,000 + 74,000 + 54,000 + 48,000 + 43,000 + 39,000 + 37,000 + 39,000 + 30,000 + 29,000 + 26,000 + 29,000 + 25,000 + 24,000 + 27,000 + 30,000 + 31,000 + 24,000 + 22,000 + 18,000 + 19,000 + 17,000 + 17,000 + 15,000 + 14,000 + 14,000 + 13,000 + 13,000 + 16,000 + 19,000 + 21,000 + 23,000 + 22,000 + 22,000 + 24,000 + 25,000 + 24,000 + 23,000 + 21,000 + 28,000 + 28,000 + 30,000 + 46,000 + 72,000 + 42,000 + 28,000 + 26,000 + 19,000 + 20,000 + 19,000 + 46,000 + 53,000 + 36,000 + 81,000 + 56,000 + 40,000 + 32,000 + 29,000 + 22,000 + 18,000 + 14,000 + 13,000 + 11,000 + 12,000 + 9,000 + 9,000 + 9,000 + 8,000 + 11,000 + 9,000 + 8,000 + 8,000

Exact U.S. SoundScan sales are: 3,921,804 copies (note that the sum of the weekly estimates is off from the exact total due to rounding). The album is less than 80,000 copies from the 4x Platinum mark in the U.S. :D

Prior U.S. ATYCLB chart data:

Highest Rankings for "Beautiful Day": #21 on the Hot 100 chart, #1 on the Dance Charts, #5 on the Modern Rock chart, #4 on the Adult Top 40 chart.

Highest Rankings for "Suck in a Moment...": #52 on the Hot 100 chart, #9 on the Adult Top 40 chart.

Highest Rankings for "Elevation": #9 on the Modern Rock chart. I *believe* #17 on the Dance charts.

Highest Rankings for "Walk On": #10 on the Modern Rock chart.

Here is a bit more U.S. chart news for this week.

The "Elevation" VHS video rises from #19 to #18 in its 31st week on the music video charts. Here are the sales for the past 7 weeks: 1,253 - 1, 214 - 1,124 - 1,746 - 1,314 ? 1,078 - 1,043.

The DVD version of the video (also out for 31 weeks) is seen on DVD music charts. Here are its chart and sales performances the past 7 weeks: #11- 13 - 13 - 13- 16 - 15 - 18; 1,162 - 1,137 - 1,045 - 1,614 - 1,223 ? 998 - 965.

Although both the DVD and VHS saw drops in sales this week, after the holiday season, this video (VHS and DVD) has sold between 2,000-4,000 copies each week. These sales, combined with the holiday season sales easily makes this a Platinum selling (100,000 copies sold) video. My guess is that when U2's label recertifies ATYCLB (as 4x Platinum), they will also certify this video (or at least they should!).

The "Best Of" has enjoyed a nice little rebound on the Pop Catalog charts. This week, while it drops on the chart, its sales rise. Here are its chart and sales performances for the past 7 weeks: #79 - 66 - 52 - 45 ? 42 - 47 - 55; 3,638 - 3,835 - 4,258 - 5,562 - 4,597 ? 4,241 - 4,258.

Unfortunately, the "Best Of - Limited Edition" (the one with b-sides), which charted at #187 on the Catalog charts with sales of 2,064 copies last week, falls from the Top 200 this week, meaning sales were below 2,122 copies.

The "Joshua Tree", however, is able to hold on in the Top 200 on the Catalog charts. Here is its chart and sales run for the past 7 weeks: out - 181 - out - 192 ? 200 - 199 - 189; 2,013 - 2, 179 - 2, 016 - 2,503 - 2,075 ? 1,974 - 2,180. I estimate that JT is selling around 2,000 copies a week - even if it doesn't chart. Not bad for a 15 year old album, but not always enough to keep it in the Top 200 on the Pop Catalog charts.

As always, I thank Melissa for sending me the SoundScan report so I could present these accurate numbers.

Woo hoo! thanks doc.

Glad to see they update here again. I was a little worried for a while. :)

Great to see it holding steady, I sold it a little short. I thought that it would be off the charts by July, but it looks like it could get through August at this rate.

Great to see your back doc.

There is no chart news like your chart news and we will always appreciate it here.

Maybe U2 can hold on until the end of October then that will be two full years on the chart. then we will only have to wait a couple of weeks and there will be the new best of. The excitement never ends.

I predict ATYCLB will be certified for 4 million shipments at the end of August based on the past month of sales for the album. Only 78,000 copies to go before it hits 4 million on soundscan. I guess there are 40,000 copies in stores right now. Another 5 weeks with 8,000 per week sold, should allow for another shipment of 40,000 putting the album over the 4 million shipment mark.

I believe that ATYCLB will be certified 4x Platinum once the new Best Of recieves its certifications. Record companies like to hold out and give certifications for more than one of an artist's albums at the same time. So, I'd expect that sometime in November ATYCLB will reach the mark.

That is a definite possibility, but I hope they certify the first chance they get once its eligible.
