Here is where ATYCLB is charting in the world in Week 85/86:

France #138
Canada #78
Ireland #37
United States #117

This week the sudden burst of sales in France for ATYCLB is starting to taper off as the album falls from #89 to #138. Sales in France are estimated at 1,955. In Ireland ATYCLB rises to #37 with an estimated 430 copies sold. In Canada, Dr. Who provided an editorial comment which put ATYCLB sales at about 1,000 copies at #78. The Mystery here is that with my estimate, I got 1,846 for sales in Canada at #78. My estimates for the other countries is done by dividing the countries population by the USA population. Then taking that number and multiplying it by the appropriate number on the USA soundscan chart depending on number the album is charting at in that country. This is very accurate if on a per-capita basis album sales in the country are the same as the USA. But with the Canadian sales info Dr. Who provided, it appears at least for this week, that #78 on the Canadian charts is selling at half the rate of #78 in the USA chart on a per capita basis. I went ahead and used Dr. Who's reported figure rather than my estimate for this week.

In the USA the album is at #117 with sales of 10,947 and total sales so far now reaching 3,897,052. Global sales for the week are estimated at 14,332. Total worldwide sales for ATYCLB are now estimated at 10,919,672!

Hello,

There is still no sign of ATYCLB in the Dutch charts. However, The Best Of... is getting a remarkable chart run (for the moment). The album re-entered the charts 7 weeks ago and is now at #52!
Here is the total run (for its 11th chart run):
93-66-55-55-49-46-52-52

Nevertheless, I hope ATYCLB will return soon to the charts, but for now I'll settle with The Best Of...

C ya!

Marty

Wow sales in france at almost 2,000 at number 138. I didn't realize France was such a big market.

Just a couple of quick quesitons.

what is the population of France?

Does any one know the total sales for France for ATYCLB or any of U2's albums?

Total population in France is 59,411,000. A little more than 1/5 of the USA population. Although I do not have exact figures, U2s album sales in France are similar to that of the United Kingdom. Total sales are probably close to 10 million for all of U2s albums in France as they are in the UK. You can get U2s UK album sales from the www.bpi.co.uk/ . Go to certified awards and type in U2 and it will bring up all of U2s certifications to date. Platinum in the UK is 300,000 , 50% higher on a per capita basis than the USA. Gold is 100,000 which is on per capita the same as the USA, and Silver is 60,000.

thanks STING2

It looks like U2 is selling about 1/5 the albums there as in the U.S. also so they are doing very well in France.

All of this even though the Elevation tour was focused almost completely on the U.S.
I don't know if a bigger tour of Europe would of helped sales in Europe but if so apparently their popularity is still higher in other parts of the world than in the U.S.

The last few weeks have seen ATYCLB bounce between 117 and 131 on the U.S. charts, with sales fluctuating by as much as 2,800 copies between weeks. In Week 81, ATYCLB dropped to #119 on the U.S. Billboard charts (down from #107 the week before) and sold 9,321 copies, down from 11,712 copies the week prior (Week 80). In Week 82, the album dropped to #131, the lowest chart position it had ever been in the U.S. at that time. However, its sales remained very steady, even increasing ever so slightly, to 9,353 copies. In Week 83, there was a mini-rebound as the album bounced up to #118 on the U.S. Billboard charts. It also increased slightly in sales to 9,415 copies. In Week 84, the album dropped again down to #130 with a mere 8,164 copies sold. This was the lowest weekly sales for the album in the U.S. since its release. In week 85, the album bounced back up to #117, the highest position it has held since Week 80, with sales of 10,947 copies - an increase of almost 2,800 copies!

For some reason, last week was a very strong week across the Top 200. There was no specific holiday or 3-day weekend to spur sales, so it appears the mini-boom was due to school being out for the summer. While it's arguable that ATYCLB sales were given a boost thanks to the showing of the "Elevation" concert on TV, many albums received a boost and overall sales in the Top 200 were up by a little over 550,000 copies.

Whatever effect caused this sales boom, sales returned to what they were the week two weeks ago - especially for U2.

In week 86, ATYCLB drops to #135, the lowest it has charted in the U.S. Sales for the week were 8,589 copies, down almost 2,400 copies from the week prior.

As I scanned through the chart, I saw a lot of other older, but big-selling, albums drop similarly to ATYCLB. For example, the Beatles' "1" dropped from #121 with sales of 10,785 copies, to #143 and 7,851 copies sold. This is a decrease of almost 2,900 copies! Additionally, Jennifor Lopez's "J. Lo", which saw a sales increase of about 200 copies last week, sees a sales drop of 700 copies this week. "J.Lo" has been out for 74 weeks while "1" has been out for 84 weeks. Those of you who read my weekly updates may recall that I have compared ATYCLB to those same two albums for the past two weeks and now this week. In other words, ATYCLB is following the same trends as other top-selling albums.

I predicted that ATYCLB would remain relatively stable for a while - throughout the summer - before it finally fell out of the Top 200. And based on the last 8 weeks, since the album dropped out of the Top 100, this appears to be true. Even though the album is out of the Top 100, it has averaged a little below 10,000 copies sold per week these past 8 weeks. The album has charted no lower than #135 with sales no less than 8,100 copies. Let's hope these fairly steady sales remain (or improve) as the summer season progresses. I'd really like to see ATYCLB get that 4x Platinum certification before it falls from the Top 200. :D

Chart Summary for United States

"POP" was out of the Top 100 after 19 weeks and "Zooropa" was out of the Top 100 after 31 weeks. ATYCLB fell out of the Top 100 after 40 weeks, however, it had returned for an additional 34 weeks.

ATYCLB spent 74 out of 86 total weeks in the U.S. Top 100; 30 weeks in the U.S. Top 40; and 3 weeks in the U.S. Top 10.

Approximate weekly sales for the first 86 weeks of ATYCLB are (rounded to nearest thousand):

428,000 + 176,000 + 119,000 + 125,000 + 100,000 + 113,000 + 154,000 + 259,000 + 108,000 + 66,000 + 59,000 + 57,000+ 47,000 + 44,000 + 41,000 + 49,000 + 85,000 + 74,000 + 54,000 + 48,000 + 43,000 + 39,000 + 37,000 + 39,000 + 30,000 + 29,000 + 26,000 + 29,000 + 25,000 + 24,000 + 27,000 + 30,000 + 31,000 + 24,000 + 22,000 + 18,000 + 19,000 + 17,000 + 17,000 + 15,000 + 14,000 + 14,000 + 13,000 + 13,000 + 16,000 + 19,000 + 21,000 + 23,000 + 22,000 + 22,000 + 24,000 + 25,000 + 24,000 + 23,000 + 21,000 + 28,000 + 28,000 + 30,000 + 46,000 + 72,000 + 42,000 + 28,000 + 26,000 + 19,000 + 20,000 + 19,000 + 46,000 + 53,000 + 36,000 + 81,000 + 56,000 + 40,000 + 32,000 + 29,000 + 22,000 + 18,000 + 14,000 + 13,000 + 11,000 + 12,000 + 9,000 + 9,000 + 9,000 + 8,000 + 11,000 + 9,000

Exact U.S. SoundScan sales are: 3,905,641 copies (note that the sum of the weekly estimates is off from the exact total due to rounding). The album is less than 95,000 copies from the 4x Platinum mark in the U.S. :D ATYCLB has now crossed the 3.9 million copies sold plateau.

Prior U.S. ATYCLB chart data:

Highest Rankings for "Beautiful Day": #21 on the Hot 100 chart, #1 on the Dance Charts, #5 on the Modern Rock chart, #4 on the Adult Top 40 chart.

Highest Rankings for "Suck in a Moment...": #52 on the Hot 100 chart, #9 on the Adult Top 40 chart.

Highest Rankings for "Elevation": #9 on the Modern Rock chart. I *believe* #17 on the Dance charts.

Highest Rankings for "Walk On": #10 on the Modern Rock chart.

Here is a bit more U.S. chart news.

The boost that the videos and catalog albums all received last week has also dropped this week - across the board (meaning not just for U2). It appears that with school being out for summer, there was a spike in sales as students ran to the malls for some fun. Now that spike has leveled.

The "Elevation" VHS video remains steady at #15 in its 29th week on the music video charts. Here are the sales for the past 5 weeks: 1,253 - 1, 214 - 1,124 - 1,746 - 1,314. The video jumped over 600 copies sold last week, but dropped by over 400 copies sold this week.

The DVD version of the video sees a similar trend. Here are its chart and sales performances the past five weeks: #11- 13 - 13 - 13- 16; 1,162 - 1,137 - 1,045 - 1,614 - 1,223 . The DVD saw an increase of almost 600 copies last week, but it too drops by almost 400 copies this week.

Nonetheless, despite these drops, after the holiday season, this video (VHS and DVD) has sold between 2,000-4,000 copies each week. These sales, combined with the holiday season sales easily makes this a GOLD selling video (50,000 copies sold) and most-likely even Platinum (100,000 copies sold). My guess is that when U2's label recertifies ATYCLB, they will also certify this video (or at least they should!).

The "Best Of" continues to enjoy a nice little rebound up the Pop Catalog charts. Here are its chart and sales performances for the past 5 weeks: #79 - 66 - 52 - 45 - 42; 3,638- 3,835 - 4,258 - 5,562 - 4,597. As you can see, the "Best Of" jumps up to #42 on the charts, but sees a sales drop of nearly 1,000 copies. This is just proof of how slow sales were this week. Still, as expected, the "Best Of" will probably remain somewhere in the Top 100 on the Catalog charts for some time, slowly selling several hundred thousand copies a year. :D

The "Best Of" is not the only U2 album on the U.S. Pop Catalog charts, however, U2 weren't as successful this week as they were last week. Last week, the "Best Of - Limited Edition" (the one with b-sides) charted at #184 this week, with sales of 2,552 copies. The week prior, this album only sold 1,810 copies. The album does not chart in the Top 200 on the Catalog charts this week, suggesting that sales have once again returned to around 1,800 copies for this album.

The "Joshua Tree" however is able to hold on in the Top 200 for another week. Here is its chart and sales run for the past few weeks: out - 181 - out - 192 - 200; 2,013 - 2, 179 - 2, 016 - 2,503 - 2,075. Even JT dropped by over 400 copies this week. Still, I estimate that JT is selling slightly over 2,000 copies a week - even if it doesn't chart. Not bad for a 15 year old album, but not always enough to keep it in the Top 200 on the Pop Catalog charts.

Note that all of U2's items that charted saw sales decreases of 400 to almost 3,000 copies more as compared to last week. It appears that the summer holiday boom of last week has lost its luster this week. Still, U2 holds on fairly strong and ATYCLB inches just a bit closer to 4x Platinum. :)

As always, I thank Melissa for sending me the SoundScan report so I could present these accurate numbers.

Here are the Top 200 SoundScan numbers for the Catalog Charts. Note that total sales there dropped by about 150,000 copies for the week. Also note that the confusion regarding Bob Dylan from last week has suddenly been corrected. Now the data reflect that Bob Marley had the #1 album on the Catalog charts last week (and this week).

Great to see ATYCLB pass the 3.9 million mark! I wonder what July will bring for the album since the ABC family channel will no longer be running the Elevation show. If it can stay above 8,000 per week, it should pass 4,000,000 in 12 weeks! That is of course soundscan sales. I actually think they will wait until that point to certify it although shipments based on 8,000 sales per week means that it might be ready when it hits 3,960,000 in soundscan sales. As always thanks for the update DR. WHO! Notice in the catalog charts that the Red Hot Chili Peppers Californication is starting to rise as more airplay grows for the new album.

While I agree with what you wrote and we have seen evidence in the past that it might actually take for ATYCLB to really zoom in on that 4 million copies sold barrier before a 4x Platinum certificate is issued, I just find it very challenging to believe that all of the stores across the U.S. don't have at least 95,000 copies of this album between them. In fact, I'd be stunned if this wasn't the case. After all, there are TONS of stores that sell CDs. Just with all of the Best Buys and Circuit Cities, I'd think there would be 95,000 copies of this album.

Nonetheless, when the album transitioned from 2 to 3x Platinum, it had to sell 2.97 million copies before it received the certification. It had officially sold over 1 million copies before it was certified as 1x Platinum! So I guess it will take a few more weeks or months before we see the 4x Platinum note. And even then, it might not happen. U2's label, seeing that ATYCLB is slipping off the charts, might not be in any hurry to pay for the recertification.

Still, when they do recertify ATYCLB, I also hope they finally certify the "Elevation" video. That video easily must be Platinum by now. In reality, I'd love to see ALL of U2's catalog recertified, as albums like JT haven't been certified since 1995. Given the success of the PopMart tour, the "Best Of" and ATYCLB and its Elevation tour, I'm sure it might have crossed another barrier or two since 1995.

Great! thanks for the full info Doc.

It is frustrating to not get certification of the entire catalog. It would be great to see what AB and JT would be at now. I don't think they would be a lot higher, but about 1 or 2 million I suppose. Do you think POP would be recertified at 2 million yet? I know that figures in 1997-98 were at about 1.65 million sold.
Also frustrating to see the crap that outsells U2 on the catalog charts. Do you think that the Best of with B-sides will ever go away? Do you think they will always keep printing these? The sales would definitely go up for the traditional version if they stopped having 2 versions. I don't like the idea of two versions at all. If you are going to offer two discs, just offer 2 discs and don't split up your sales. Oh well, probably will never happen.

I don't think there is any doubt at all in my mind that ATYCLB has easily cleared the 4 million albums shipped that it needs for quadruple platinum. What I am wondering is if they will even bother certifiying it now that it is out of the top 100 and a new release is now on the horizon. They may just wait for a while.
You have to think that places like Best Buy, Curcuit City, other Big Box stores, along with huge chains like Target, Wal-Mart, K-Mart, etc... probably carry really large amounts of CD's in stock. Non-traditional outlets like BMG, Columbia House, Amazon, CDnow, etc... probably carry thousands of copies each in their stock. Add to this all of the actual "music" stores across the country and I wouldn't doubt if ATYCLB isn't already getting a good start on 5 million shipped. :)

One thing about going platinum or double platinum or just Gold when an album is first released. An album will not be certified for anything until 30 days after it has been released. Thats an RIAA rule. Up until 7 or 8 years ago, it was 60 days. In fact many Record companies still wait 60 days, the old way, after release of the album to certify. Shipments before a new highly anticipated album are released are always very high. ATYCLB shipped 1 million copies before the day it was released. But after a few months, the shipment of more albums falls in line with sales. The fact is all these stores together only sold 8,500 copies this past week. What chains are going to have in stock is going to be based on recent sales data. Recent sales data across the USA shows an average of 9,000 copies a week for the past month. At this point, I don't think chains order more copies than what they need for a months time. So at most I'd say there is about 45,000 in stock. Add that to the current sold, and you get 3,950,000. So I'd say at a minimum that album needs to sale another 50,000 copies before its certified for 4 million sold.

If an album is still selling in the Billboard 200, record companies usually not let a certification slip by. Just look at when Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby were certified for 5 million. Both were hanging low on the Billboard 200 just like ATYCLB is right now. But when they past the 5 million mark in shipments, they got certified.

Also, I have the soundscan year end charts(listing every album that sold 1,000,000 in 1997) from 1997 and POP is only at 1.3 million. The chart includes all sales during the year from first week in January to last week in December 1997. Remember that POP dropped off the Billboard chart after only 28 weeks at the end of September 1997 not to return. POP unfortunately has no hits or songs that became classics after 1997. The only song from POP that I have heard on the radio since 1997 is "Staring At the Sun" and that was on a radio station in Ireland. It would be cool if it could make it to 2 million, but with the Best of.....1990-2000 coming out in November, I kind of doubt it unless some new format comes along to replace the CD and the hardcore fans run out to buy POP in this new format. Based on sales info from Amazon.com, I could see October making double platinum before POP. Its amazing how many new fans skip POP.

I've heard this before, but I've seen evidence that says otherwise. For example, the Backstreet Boys' last album was certified 8x Platinum almost immediately. And I've seen other albums in the past almost immediately reach 1x or 2x Platinum - well before any 30 or 60 day barrier.

Still, for all intents and purposes, ATYCLB has sold 4 million copies in the U.S. Way back when I predicted it might do this and a person at the time laughed at me. Obviously, I'm getting the last laugh. :D

I don't recall the Backstreet Boys having instant certification at 8 million. I'll have to look this up, but I do not think I have seen an album certified within 30 days of release. Then again, why have a 30 day or 60 day limit if record distributers have already ordered 8 million copies of the album.
