The last few weeks haven't been very kind to ATYCLB in the U.S. In Week 81, ATYCLB dropped to #119 on the U.S. Billboard charts (down from #107 the week before) and sold 9,321 copies, down from 11,712 copies the week prior (Week 80). This was the lowest weekly sales for the album in the U.S. since its release. In Week 82, the album dropped to #131, the lowest chart position it has ever been in the U.S. However, its sales remained very steady, even increasing ever so slightly, to 9,353 copies.

So with the album hitting a new low in sales one week and a new low in chart position the next week, what did Week 83 have in store for ATYCLB?

Fortunately, it was a mini-rebound!

This week, Week 83 of ATYCLB's release, the album bounces up to #118 on the U.S. Billboard charts. It also increased slightly in sales to 9,415 copies. This is very good news as it is happily proving my optimistic prognostication. I predicted that the album would remain relatively stable for a while - throughout the summer - before it finally fell out of the Top 200. Big selling albums always tend to level off for a while before finally disappearing from the charts. I anticipated ATYCLB leveling off at about 10,000 copies per week, falling just shy of the Top 100. IN the past 4 weeks, that has proven true, as the album has sold almost exactly 40,000 copies and has lingered slightly out of the Top 100. Let's hope these very steady sales remain (or improve) as the summer season progresses.

Chart Summary for United States

The first 83 weeks for ATYCLB on the U.S. Billboard charts are:

"POP" was out of the Top 100 after 19 weeks and "Zooropa" was out of the Top 100 after 31 weeks. ATYCLB fell out of the Top 100 after 40 weeks, however, it had returned for an additional 34 weeks.

ATYCLB spent 74 out of 83 total weeks in the U.S. Top 100; 30 weeks in the U.S. Top 40; and 3 weeks in the U.S. Top 10.

Approximate weekly sales for the first 83 weeks of ATYCLB are (rounded to nearest thousand):

428,000 + 176,000 + 119,000 + 125,000 + 100,000 + 113,000 + 154,000 + 259,000 + 108,000 + 66,000 + 59,000 + 57,000+ 47,000 + 44,000 + 41,000 + 49,000 + 85,000 + 74,000 + 54,000 + 48,000 + 43,000 + 39,000 + 37,000 + 39,000 + 30,000 + 29,000 + 26,000 + 29,000 + 25,000 + 24,000 + 27,000 + 30,000 + 31,000 + 24,000 + 22,000 + 18,000 + 19,000 + 17,000 + 17,000 + 15,000 + 14,000 + 14,000 + 13,000 + 13,000 + 16,000 + 19,000 + 21,000 + 23,000 + 22,000 + 22,000 + 24,000 + 25,000 + 24,000 + 23,000 + 21,000 + 28,000 + 28,000 + 30,000 + 46,000 + 72,000 + 42,000 + 28,000 + 26,000 + 19,000 + 20,000 + 19,000 + 46,000 + 53,000 + 36,000 + 81,000 + 56,000 + 40,000 + 32,000 + 29,000 + 22,000 + 18,000 + 14,000 + 13,000 + 11,000 + 12,000 + 9,000 + 9,000 + 9,000

Exact U.S. SoundScan sales are: 3,877,941 copies (note that the sum of the weekly estimates is off from the exact total due to rounding). The album is slighly over 120,000 copies from the 4x Platinum mark in the U.S. :D

Prior U.S. ATYCLB chart data:

Highest Rankings for "Beautiful Day": #21 on the Hot 100 chart, #1 on the Dance Charts, #5 on the Modern Rock chart, #4 on the Adult Top 40 chart.

Highest Rankings for "Suck in a Moment...": #52 on the Hot 100 chart, #9 on the Adult Top 40 chart.

Highest Rankings for "Elevation": #9 on the Modern Rock chart. I *believe* #17 on the Dance charts.

Highest Rankings for "Walk On": #10 on the Modern Rock chart.

More U.S. Chart News

Here is a bit more U.S. chart news.

The "Elevation" VHS video drops ever so slightly to #14 (from #12) in its 26th week on the music video charts. Its sales also remain near constant as it sold 1,214 this week, as compared to 1,253 copies last week. The DVD version of the video also remains incredibly stable. The DVD also drops a bit, to #13 from #11, but sales remain constant as it sold 1,137 copies this week vs. 1,162 copies last week. After the holiday season, this video has been sold between 2,000-4,000 copies each week. These sales, combined with the holiday season sales easily makes this a GOLD selling video and possibly even Platinum. My guess is that when U2's label recertifies ATYCLB, they will also certify this video (or at least they should!).

The "Best Of" enjoys a nice little rebound up the Pop Catalog charts as well. It jumps from #79 to #66. Sales also improved as it sold 3,835 copies this week as compared to 3,638 last week.

The "Best Of" is not the only U2 album to appear on the Catalog charts this week. :D The "Joshua Tree" makes an appearace at #181. It sold 2,179 copies this week and 2,013 copies last week. The "Joshua Tree" has been out of the Top 200 on the Catalog charts these past few weeks. Based on last week's sales, I estimate that it is sold about 2,000 copies per week during that time - not bad for a 15 year old album, but not enough to put it in the Top 200.

As always, I thank Melissa for sending me the SoundScan report so I could present these accurate numbers.

Chart Tidbits...

And now for some chart tidbits.

Eminem's new album remains at #1 (for the second consecutive week). Last week, it reached #1 based on just ONE day's worth of sales. SoundScan tracks sales from Monday through Sunday. Eminem's album was released on a Sunday and sold a whopping 284,534 copies - good enough for #1. This week - a "normal" week, it sold 1,321,799 copies! Combined, that's about 1.6 million albums sold in a week - no record, but some very strong numbers. Eminem's album sold so well that it more than doubled all the rest of the Top 10 albums combined!

I had thought that the Memorial Day holiday would have boosted sales much higher in the U.S. Often long weekends mean kids in malls, which mean higher music sales. Yet the #10 album this past week sold a rather soft 61,263 copies. Granted, the Memorial Day holiday did boost sales somewhat, as overall sales were about 550,000 copies higher than last week - however, I feel that most of the increase can be attributed to Eminem's album. Years ago, the #10 album would sell at least 80,000 copies, yet now, week after week, 60,000 copies is often good enough to enter the Top 10. While summer is still a few weeks away, it does appear that sales have slumped considerably from what they were just a few years back. Clearly the effects of file sharing programs are taking their toll. Still, when an in demand product is created, it will sell (see Eminem's numbers).

Moby's album, "18", drops to #15 this week (from #10). Much like U2's ATYCLB, it spent a mere 2 weeks in the Top 10 before falling out. However, unlike U2's album, it only sold 48,852 copies in its third week (ATYCLB sold almost 120,000 copies its third week). A few years back, those types of sales would typically have put it out of the Top 20 - yet now, it sits rather high at #15. And, of course, this is a good thing for Moby. I like seeing his album remain near the top.

The "O Brother..." soundtrack, which inexplicably won the Album of the Year Grammy, also inexplicably continues to sell well. I have tried to listen to this album, but found it terrible - and I enjoy bluegrass music. "O Brother..." remains very constant this week, dropping from #17 to #18 with sales of 46,844 copies this week vs. 53,643 copies last week.

Below is the Top 200 SoundScan report. Enjoy!

Wow! Thanks for the Stats Dr. Who! If you could, could post the top 200 catalog. Thanks!

Here is week 82/83 international chart news for ATYCLB:

Canada #82
Ireland #30
United States #131

Total estimated sales of ATYCLB for the week were 11,138. Total sales worldwide for ATYCLB now stand at 10,881,506! Looks like only a couple of more weeks until it hits 10.9 million worldwide!

that's very cool to see a little jump up for the album in this late stage. The nice thing about it is that it continues to rack up sales (almost 40,000 a month) while not really being out in the public eye, so people are getting a little U2 break (much needed in my opinion).

Hard to say what if any effect Bono's trip with O'niell has had on the album. Most press i see is fairly negative, but it seems pretty detached from the music side of things.

We will see if the concert on ABC family does anything for sales. I would expect maybe another small kick up (maybe 10 spots or so), but nothing major - as this is a non-network tv event that really isn't anything too new.

thanks for the info doctorwho!

Here ya go. I just don't want to post to post this info. every week for fear of what happened at that other site.

I think this chart is a better indication of sales for any given week. And as you'll see at the end, sales were up for the Catalog albums - by about 9,000 copies - indicating that the Memorial Day holiday may have had a slight effect. Of course, two of Eminem's catalog albums accounted for 6,000 copies of that increase.

Exact U.S. SoundScan sales are: 3,877,941 copies

So what are the worldwide sales now?
Must be close to 10,000 by now
I'm sorry, I'm very ignorant when it comes to this type of business.

worldwide sales

Basstrap - I assume you meant 10 million, not 10 thousand.

According to our good friend Sting - worldwide sales are approaching 11 million. His latest calculation was 10,870,368 for week 81/82, so for week 82/83 we could expect about 11,000 or so more than that.

Sting, you have any ideas on what the best of has sold worldwide, I know it was 11 or 12 million like a year or so ago. But can't really remember for sure.

Also, isn't it sad to look at the catalog chart and see some of the artists that are selling more than U2. I mean the greatest album of all time (Achtung Baby) isn't even in the top 200 and we see albums on there by the likes of Toby Kieth, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Styx and Waylon Jennings!! Yikes. And that is just to name a VERY few. Oh well, the world is a crazy place.

Well the BEST OF.... has sold 3 million units in the USA, 6 million units in Europe and probably another 4 million units elsewhere. That would put it at about 13 million units total worldwide.

The latest catalog chart only has 25 studio albums from before 1990! There are 200 albums of course and most of them are more recent studio albums or GREATEST HITS collections. Notice that only one Led Zep. studio album made the list and Pink Floyds the WALL is about to drop off.

Catalog sales in general are much smaller than they were in the early 90s. This is mainly due to the fact that the rush to replace Records and Tapes with Compact Disc is over. Also, older albums are more likely to be widely distributed among people and on the internet making it easy to download or burn into new CDs. I'd say the whole Napster and CD burning thing has had a larger effect on catalog sales than regular sales. I have several good friends that have lost their entire collection of U2s CDs and this time around, replaced them all by burning CDs from my collection and other peoples. As recently as 7 years ago, they would have tried to gradually buy back anything they lost.

ok...another stupid question:

How close is ATYCLB to become to greatest selling u2 album?

Not very close. JT is estimated at 18 million copies sold (U2.com), although STING2 puts that number closer to 20 million based on the fact that it was widely reported the album sold 14 million copies worldwide just in 1987 alone! At present, JT is certified as 10x Platinum (or Diamond) in the U.S., however, it was last certified in 1995. It did receive sales spikes each time U2 had a major event (album released, tour, television appearance). Therefore, most of us think it should be recertified, where it will probably receive 11x if not 12x Platinum certification.

AB is estimated at 12-15 million copies, with it being certified as 8x Platinum in the U.S.

ATYCLB is estimated to have sold about 11 million copies. This matches reported estimates of both R&H and the "Best Of."

Therefore, at best, ATYCLB is U2's third best-selling album. At worst, it is U2's 5th best-selling album. While I do think it will eventually match and perhaps even overtake R&H in the U.S. (ATYCLB is close to 4x Platinum, whereas, R&H is 5x - although, this could be tricky as R&H was a single CD but a double album, so that number might be inflated as far as total actual sales), it is a long way from catching AB or JT in both the U.S. and worldwide.

Since Rattle and Hum was a single disc and tape, I can assure you its numbers are not inflated. The double count rule only aplies when there are two disc, tapes etc. in one package.

Here are what I feel are the best estimates for worldwide sales of U2s catalog as of June 2002.

Boy? - 2,750,000
?October? - 2,750,000
?War? - 7,000,000
?Under A Blood Red Sky? - 8,000,000
?The Unforgettable Fire? - 7,000,000
?Wide Awake In America? - 2,000,000
?The Joshua Tree - 18,000,000 TO 25,000,000
?Rattle And Hum? - 11,000,000 TO 13,000,000
?Achtung Baby? - 15,000,000 TO 17,000,000
?Zooropa? - 7,000,000
"POP" - 5,500,000
"Best OF.... 1980-1990" - 13,000,000
"All That You Can't Leave Behind" - 10,892,652

This puts U2s total global sales at between 110 million and 121 million. The low estimate is almost a confirmation and something that nearly everyone would agree with. I believe the high estimate to be correct though. Especially for the Joshua Tree. As of June 2002, based on what I know of Joshua's sales in various countries worldwide, I'd definitely put Joshua Tree's numbers at 25 or 26 million. I also think Achtung is most likely at 17 million now, and certainly not below 14,500,000. Achtung sold 10 million copies in its first year, and then has sold another 4,500,000 in the USA alone since 1992. The estimates for the other albums are of course actual confirmations or estimates I'm sure everyone would agree with.

Here are the exact USA sales for all of U2s albums from www.riaa.com :

Boy? - 1 million as of 1995
?October? - 1 million as of 1995
?War? - 4 million as of 1995
?Under A Blood Red Sky? - 3 million as of 1994
?The Unforgettable Fire? - 3 million as of 1995
?Wide Awake In America? - 1 million as of 1995
?The Joshua Tree - 10 million as of 1995
?Rattle And Hum? - 5 million as of 1995
?Achtung Baby? - 8 million as of 1997
?Zooropa? - 2 million as of 1993
"POP" - 1.3 million as of 1998
"Best Of...1980-1990" - 3 million as of 2002
"All That You Can't Leave Behind" - 3,877,941 as of June 2002

U2 has sold over 46 million albums in the United States! Notice of course that most of these number from the RIAA have not been updated since 1995!

But R&H *was* a double album. I know this because I own the album. So while the CD and/or tape may have counted only once, the album should have counted twice.

*Edit

Oh, and by "inflated" I don't mean in terms of actual sales to consumers, I mean in terms of its RIAA certification in the U.S.

No disrespect to STING2, but I feel his numbers are a bit high (although, if he's right - and often he is - YAHOO!).

Based on what I've read (from recent quips in the news, Billboard or U2.com), here are my estimates:

"Boy? - 2,750,000
?October? - 2,750,000
?War? - 7,000,000
?Under A Blood Red Sky? - 8,000,000

?Zooropa? - 6,000,000
"POP" - 5,500,000
"Best Of.... 1980-1990" - 11,000,000
"All That You Can't Leave Behind" - 11,000,000

Which puts the sum at 105 million.

No matter what, U2 have definitely sold over 100 million albums worldwide.

The RIAA did not start to count double albums until the mid 90s. By then, there were few if any records of of Rattle and Hum being sold. There are certainly many other albums that might qualify as double albums but with the release of Compact Disc simply became single albums. Since the counting rules(the RIAA rule which counts a double album as two copies) did not begin until the mid 90s, we know that in the 80s Rattle And Hum sold(shipped) 3 million in the USA within 15 weeks of its release without these rules. Given U2s popularity in the early 90s, another 2 million in catalog sales by 1995 is not unreasonable.

As far as the worldwide sales of Achtung Baby goes its a known fact that it sold 10 million copies in the first year of release. Its a known fact that with in the USA alone that the album sold 4 million copies after the first year of release. That equals 14 million copies at a minimum by November of 1997(when Achtung was certified for 8 million in sales in the USA). Of course for sales of Achtung to be that low, you would have to assume that global sales outside the USA since the end of 1992 have been less than 1 million. Thats the only way you could arrive at a figure that is as low as 14 million for Achtung.

With the Joshua Tree, the album sold 14-15 million copies in 1987. It is then a known fact that it sold another 6 million copies in the USA by 1995. Thats a minimum of 20 to 21 million. Thats also not counting sales outside the USA after 1987. Joshua Tree in its first year was a much more successful album than the 11 million selling ATYCLB. Just look at the Joshua Tree thread with the chart positions worldwide! Joshua Tree most likely hit 18 million in sales before Achtung Baby was even released.

Here is another way of looking at it for Achtung Baby. Lets look at total confirmed sales of ATYCLB and Achtung Baby in 4 countries, the USA, Canada, United Kingdom, and Australia.

Achtung Baby:

United States - 8,500,000
United Kingdom - 1,200,000
Canada - 1,000,000
Australia - 375,000

Total: 11,075,000 for the above 4 countries. If Dr. Who's figure of 13 million for Achtung Baby is correct, that leaves only 1,925,000 copies sold in over 30 other countries outside the above four for Achtung Baby.

ATYCLB:

United States - 4,000,000
United Kingdom - 1,000,000
Canada - 500,000
Australia - 280,000

Total: 5,780,000 for the 4 countries being compared. With ATYCLB at 11 million copies sold, that means that 5,220,000 copies of ATYCLB were sold outside of the 4 countries in question.

The Result: If Dr. Who's figure for Achtung Baby is Correct, it means that ATYCLB sold nearly 3 times as many copies outside the above 4 countries as Achtung Baby did(5,220,000 for ATYCLB vs. 1,925,000 for Achtung) There is nothing to indicate chart wise that ATYCLB was any more successful than Achtung Baby was in countries outside the 4 above. You then have to conclude that Achtung Baby sales outside the above 4 countries are at least roughly the same as ATYCLB. We can confirm that ATYCLB sales are a little over 5 million outside the above 4 countries which means a figure of 5 million for Achtung as well(perhaps even more). This of course pushes Achtungs total figure 3 million copies past Dr. Who's figure to 16 million.

ATYCLB may have perhaps equaled Achtung Baby's sales in some countries. But answer this: Can you name a single country where it is confirmed that ATYCLB is at a higher level of sales than Achtung Baby? Can you name a single country where ATYCLB sales have equaled or surpassed the Joshua Tree's sales?
The answer to these questions is of course No, correct me if I'm wrong of course. We know that ATYCLB has sold about 11 million copies worldwide. We also know that sales of Achtung and Joshua are most likely equal to are greater than ATYCLB in every country. Then look at the USA where sales of Achtung are double of ATYCLB and sales of Joshua are 2.5 times as great or maybe even 3 times as great. Then do the math and add everything up. In a strange way, the confirmed numbers for ATYCLB help me I think, prove my numbers for Achtung Baby and maybe even Joshua Tree. Anyways hope you enjoyed reading this investigation and possible answer of this unsolved mystery.

Oh, for those four countries here is what Joshua Tree's figures look like just for comparison:

United States - 10,000,000 TO 12,000,000
United Kingdom - 1,800,000 TO 2,100,000
Canada - 1,000,000 TO 2,000,000
Australia - 375,000 +

The first numbers for Joshua Tree in the USA and United Kingdom were confirmed in 1995 and 1992 respectively. In Canada, The Joshua Tree hit the 1 million mark after only 6 months of release in 1987. It charted at #1 after that point and remained in the Canadian top 20 for another 6 months. Then add those catalog sales and its easy to see that its most likely above 2 million in Canada now.

Sting2:

I'm basing my lower estimate for AB on the fact that in 1997, 6 years after AB's release, they reported worldwide sales at a mere 9.7 million copies.

I realize you may take issue with that number, especially given the fact that AB has been certified as 8x Platinum just in the U.S. However, you can see where the confusion lies.

Nonetheless, I'm more than willing to add another 5 million copies overall to U2's sales. 2-3 million more for AB and the rest for JT and other albums. This would then put U2's numbers at 110 million copies sold worldwide. I still think 120 million is too high.

Of course, the way to really end this debate is for U2's label to release some numbers. I once asked U2.com to report these figures, but haven't heard from them. The only number they stated was the 18 million for JT.

Oh - and thanks for the info. about the RIAA. Of course, if what you stated is correct (and I assume it is), then this negates a comment you made in another thread. You stated that "The Wall" by Pink Floyd is counted twice, meaning it really sold about 11 million copies (the RIAA has certified it as 22 million). However, if the RIAA didn't start counting double albums until the 90's, I would contend that the bulk of the sales for "The Wall" ( for album, tape and CD) were done well before 1990. As such, these items were counted only once by the RIAA. Therefore, it is very possible that "The Wall" really did sell 22 million copies.

Doc,

The difference between The Wall and Rattle And Hum is that The Wall is still a double album, even in the CD-era. I don't know the exact rules the RIAA used before the mid-Nineties, but currently the RIAA uses the following rule:
For boxed sets, and double albums with a running time that exceeds 100 minutes or more, the RIAA multiplies shipments by the number of discs and/or tapes.

As I don't have The Wall myself I don't know the exact running time, but if it does succeed the 100 minutes every copy of The Wall is counted twice. Then again, it's quite plausible to assume that The Wall has indeed sold 22 million copies. This is after all from a band who had the Dark Side Of The Moon in the Billboard 200 from its year of release (1973?) until the appearance of the Catalog Chart. And that's a lot of weeks!

C ya!

I think you might be just a TAD unfair towards Rattle and Hum here....it was certified at 5X Platinum 7 years ago! That's got to be atleast now at 6X Platinum in the USA, and probably more at the 13-14 million worldwide....
I'd say Achtung Baby is probably about 8.6-9 million copies sold in the USA...so around 15-16 million worldwide sounds right.
Funny how ATYCLB is the only one we have a DEFINITE, or close to, figure whereas the others are all estimates. Why's that for POP and BEST OF, I thought Doc Who was tracking those back then....ofcourse I remember him saying something like he accidentally over-estimated.....
ANyway.....Thanks STING!
WHYWHY

I certainly agree with you WhyWhy. As far as RIAA rules and Pink Floyds the Wall, I know that they counted every single album sold from 1979 to the present as a double album. At one point Pink Floyds the WAll was certified at 11 million. Then the next certification about a year later was for 22 million! Obviously that shows that all the albums sales were counted twice because of the counting rules. When the new counting rules came in the mid 90s, I don't think they considered Rattle and Hum to be a double album. By then, it was really only being sold as a single compact disk or cassette. Records unless special ordered were not being sold.

When talking about album sales, any independent auditing firm like RIAA or IFPI is giving exact numbers and also a certification date which make them 100% reliable as source of info for sales. Unfortunately, RIAA is only for the USA and IFPI only includes albums released after January 1994. The CRIA is a good source but only provides updates from 1998 to the present for Canada although it can include any album from any time period unlike IFPI.

With the press release from a branch Polygram office in New Zealand in March of 1997, one easily has to look at that skepticaly in light of the factual numbers with a certification dates from the RIAA. First although it was put out in March of 1997, it never specified that those were sales for all U2 albums up to March of 1997. 2nd, it was a branch office in New Zealand of all places and not the headquarters for the company worldwide. Third, many of the sales totals for the list correspond to first year sales totals for several of the albums. 4th there is no outside evidence to support that these are current sales as of March of 1997, all evidence points to the fact that it is outdated sales figures.

Most damning for that New Zealand report is the sales of Achtung Baby. 9.7 million. It is an undisputed fact that Achtung Baby at that time had sold 8 million in the USA, RIAA has done the audit. It is also an undisputed fact that Achtung Baby sales outside the USA are either equal to ATYCLB or greater than it, which means you have to add 7 million from outside the USA to the known 8 million inside the USA and thats in 1997! That puts Achtung Baby at 15 million! Combined sales in the United Kingdom (BPI), United States (RIAA), and Canada (CRIA) for Achtung Baby in March of 1997 are greater than the NZ Polygram figure of 9.7 million for the entire world. Thats just the independently audited sales from 3 countries proving that the Achtung figure and most likely the rest of that list is outdated info. Based on the proven sales from the (BPI), (RIAA), and (CRIA), for Achtung Baby in March 1997, how could you continue to look at the NZ PLG list as factual updated info?

Funny how ATYCLB is the only one we have a DEFINITE, or close to, figure whereas the others are all estimates. Why's that for POP and BEST OF, I thought Doc Who was tracking those back then....ofcourse I remember him saying something like he accidentally over-estimated.....
ANyway.....Thanks STING!
WHYWHY

The reason we have such accurate numbers for the U.S. is because we have been able to obtain actual SoundScan numbers. For many weeks, a fellow U2 fan - who prefers to be known only as Melissa - has sent me SoundScan charts. I try to share that info. when I get it. Other times, we obtained numbers from a website that used to post them.

Sting2 estimates worldwide sales based on the U.S. numbers and then on the countries where ATYCLB is still charting. My guess - and I'm sure he'd agree - is that he's probably a little low each week. After all, just because an album isn't charting, it doesn't mean it's not selling. Still, I feel his worldwide estimates give us a good idea of real sales.

In contrast with "Pop" and "The Best Of" I only had a few weeks of actual SoundScan data. After that, I estimated from chart positions. This resulted in me being higher than I thought. Also, I think I was overly optimistic (especially with regards to "Pop").

Now that we have numerous SoundScan reports from the past, even if we don't get one on a given week, if we at least learn the chart number, we can get a good estimate of the weekly sales.

Sting2's has stated in the past that the RIAA certifications are good estimates of actual consumer sales. This statement holds relatively true. They aren't perfect though. For example, "Pop" has sold close to 1.5 million copies in the U.S., but it has been certified as only Platinum. Therefore, the certification doesn't account for that extra 500,000 copies sold. Likewise, there are times where the RIAA certification well exceeds actual sales due to various promotional events. Yet, in general, the RIAA estimates are fairly close to the actual consumer sales of a given album. Therefore, if you are curious about U2's U.S. sales, just check the RIAA certifications.

Lastly, STING2, I agree, the numbers for AB do seem off. And I am beginning to think that you are right - perhaps those numbers reflect only the first year's worth of sales for those albums.

Regardless, I really wish U2's label would list the most accurate figures they have for U2's sales. It can't be that difficult of a thing to do, can it?

Also in helping add up ATYCLB sales, www.ifpi.com the IFPI website, has been a big help. It tracks sales in Europe and is the Sister of RIAA here in the USA. Unfortunately, only albums released 1994 or after are tracked. ATYCLB has sold 4 million copies in Europe to date. The Best Of has sold over 6 million in Europe. POP has sold 2 million copies in Europe. For Canadian sales go to www.cria.ca . This is the Canadian equivalent of the RIAA for the USA and the IFPI for Europe. Also both Brazilian charts and Australian charts have listed how many albums ATYCLB has sold in those countries. ATYCLB has sold over 400,000 copies in Brazil. ATYCLB has sold over 300,000 copies in Australia.

i love seeing these threads-- you guys always make boring sales numbers sound interesting.

and just a random question because I forget-- do any of you remember the two albums that beat U2 the first week they were released and where those albums are now? I think you guys answered this somewhere before but just wondering if any of you knew off the tops of your heads.

The two albums that beat ATYCLB to the first (and second) spot were Stankonia by Outkast and a Jay-Z album. Both of these albums are off the charts already. In fact, both Outkast and Jay-Z have released another album (Big Boi & Dre Present... and Unplugged) in the meantime and those albums are also charting lower than ATYCLB. Jay-Z even has yet another album out (Best Of Both Worlds, together with R. Kelly), but that one is charting higher than ATYCLB (Jay-Z/R. Kelly was around #70 last week).

C ya!
