 coldplay were selling twice these amounts last year.

More people were buying albums in 2008. There has been an across the board 15% decline in album sales since then. NLOTH is still way out in front in terms of worldwide sales for 2009. If Viva La Vida had been released in March 2009, it would not be selling as well as it did in 2008.

There are a few interesting points about this list.

First is that NLOTH has only been out for 7-8 weeks and it's already this high - that's good. NLOTH clearly won't hit the heights of Winehouse's album, but I doubt she could repeat that again in this environment.

Second is that NLOTH is really about 500K to 1M units behind some big sellers, like Beyonce and Britney Spears. Both of these albums have had some big hits and have been out longer. Give NLOTH a hit song - any hit - and a successful tour and suddenly I can see these sales surge dramatically.

Had NLOTH been able to take advantage of the 2008 holiday season, I'm sure sales would have been up there with Spears and maybe Beyonce by now. But now we'll have to see if the summer is kind to U2 and if the album can survive until the December of this year. If so, it will get a holiday boost.

In other words, when I look at the recent big albums, with a few exceptions (like AC/DC and Coldplay releases), NLOTH is performing rather well and will most likely improve tremendously.

lol. yea. ac/dc is great and all, but i don;t get where the force is coming from behind this album. I mean ac/dc has is the anti-u2. they have put the same album out 20 times, lol. You will never see discussions on ac/dc message boards about "playing it safe" and "experimenting" lol.
