Week 61

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Not sure if this has been answered before, but when the album is bought off Amazon.com does this count towards the sales figures we see for the USA each week? or is this separate sales?
And the same question must be asked for downloads, because HTDAAB was the #1 album in digital sales last year for USA.

It counts

And the same question must be asked for downloads, because HTDAAB was the #1 album in digital sales last year for USA.

Album sales through Amazon.com, or any website for that matter, do go into the total album sales for HTDAAB each week. Billboard does track "Internet Album Sales", and HTDAAB was on this chart for quite a while.

Legal, full-album sales purchased via download are also added into the total sales figures for an album in the U.S.

Good to see that the bomb has passed the 3 million mark. It has better sales and a better position, I hope it continues like that.

Great to see that the BOMB has finally passed the 3 million mark in sales and is up to #175 this week!  :applaud:

Yes, great results this week...

6,605 in UK & US... 15k+ worldwide ? Possibly. I think we can certainly say 10-12k anyway.

we should start to see the bomb go up in the next couple weeks, the OOTS video is getting a lot of play on VH1, and the grammys are getting closer........

Yeah, and the grammys performance (Vertigo + One) itself should produce a significant increase in sales, at least for the first week after the ceremony.

Throw in the sales for The Best Of 1980-1990/The B Sides and it's sold over 4 million units in the US. With HTDAAB passing the 3 million mark, that gives them nine releases that have done so, something I'd imagine less than five artists have done in the US. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Garth Brooks are the only artists to have done so.

1. The Joshua Tree - 10 Million
2. Achtung Baby - 8 Million
3. Rattle and Hum - 5 Million
4. The Best Of 1980-1990 (Both Versions) - 4.7 million units (at least)
5. War - 4 Million
6. All That You Can't Leave Behind - 4 Million
7. Under A Blood Red Sky - 3 Million
8. The Unforgettable Fire - 3 Million
9. How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb - 3 Million

ABOY #68 (#58)

By the way, I have scoured Australian chart archives from 2001 onwards and now have complete chart runs for ATYCLB, 90-00 and HTDAAB on top 100 albums...
I also have most positions for Best of 80-90 which spent 217 weeks on top 100...
If interested in these email me at Roseicapilla@hotmail.com or voice your interest here

Has War been actually certified as 4 times platinum? I must have missed it.
Also, when a new RIAA certification takes place, we will see that JT and Rattle and hum (and maybe AB and UABRS) will get an additional platinum certification.

And what about Boy? With U2 playing several tracks off that album during the VT, what are the chances for the album to get the second platinum certification?

YES, it was certified 4 times platinum way back in 1995. I can see Joshua Tree getting another 1 or 2 million copies in certifications, but not any other albums. Catalog sales have really shrunk over the past 10 years do to U2 coming out with the Best Of albums and then "File Sharing", "CD Burning" and other ways of getting music for free have become so common.

It took a good while for albums back in the old days to sell a million copies in catalog status, now it could take several U2 albums 10 or 20 years to sell another million copies in the USA when you consider most U2 albums only sell a few hundred copies a week each. Thanks to "File Sharing", CD Burning and other free ways of getting music, catalog album sales will continue to fall even further.

Most people who decide they want the BOY album from hearing the songs on this tour will probably burn it from a friend or find it for free through the internet some how.

A total of 7 artist have 9 or more albums to pass the 3 million mark in the United States.

The Beatles have 17 triple platinum albums.

Elvis, THE KING has 13 triple platinum albums.

Garth Brooks has 12 triple platinum albums

Madonna, has 11 triple Platinum albums.

Mariah Carey has 10 triple Platinum albums.

Van Halen has 10 triple Platinum albums.

U2 has 9 triple platinum albums.

It appears that Led Zeppelin only has 8 albums that have passed triple platinum mark. Remember, multi-disk set albums have each disk in the set counting towards certification, so when you look at those certifications for 4 million or 5 million etc, you have to divide that number by the number of disk in each package to get the number of copies sold.

Remember though, the B-Sides Version is actually a 2CD set so it's really only 2xPlat on the basis of actual single sales of about 1.4m (if it's sold 2m it would be 4xPlat). So surely the single sales total for both added together should be about 4.1m.
