... & it would have sold about 4,500 so it should already have done about another 7,500 in just the first 2 wks of 2006.

Wow ! that's pretty super cool.

... so this week, with the # 85 album selling 3,279 & overall album sales 18% lower, Best Of would have sold around 4k last week. So it should actually have sold around 8k+ in the first 2wks of ' 06.

 Correction Alert ! : artist albums sales actually went up 18% this week so Best Of would have sold about 3k last week.

No good news today:
- France: boms is out of top 200 for the second week;

- Italy: HTDAAB goes out of top 100 after three weeks of re-entry; so the chart run is:

Sadly, after 59 weeks, the (first?) chart run of How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb has come to an end in the Netherlands. This week the album drops out of the Mega Top 100. Still, this album did very well. It was their 9th consecutive #1 record in the Netherlands (from The Joshua Tree onwards all their albums reached the top position). And it stayed in the Mega Top 100 for a respectable 59 weeks (I think that there are only 4 albums or so who have had more weeks in the Mega Top 100 now). As summary, here's the full chart run:
How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb (27-11-2004):
1-1-2-3-4-4-5-6-7-8
6-1-1-3-6-4-8-10-11-14
17-17-24-28-23-30-32-38-34-28
16-14-9-5-4-6-8-11-14-20
21-27-34-48-34-49-63-60-72-82
77-93-91-80-84-88-80-82-99-out

And here are the chart runs of its singles on the Mega Top 50:
Vertigo (13-11-2004):
2-3-3-10-13-18-21-23-23-24
39-out of chart

Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own (12-2-2005):
36-2-3-6-15-17-26-43-out

City Of Blinding Lights (25-6-2005):
2-3-5-8-11-16-21-30-31-47
out

All Because Of You (Mega Top 50: 24-9-2005):
47-33-33-12-7-10-14-27-29-30
31-50-out

Thanks SOLDATTI for the update!

Next week BOMB should cross the 3 million mark in the United States on Soundscan. Grammy awards are only 3 weeks away!

So I take it that this week, the only place BOMB is charting on the planet is the United States? Any other countries out there with BOMB on their national album chart?

Week 60

ATYCLB VS. HTDAAB in the United States

HTDAAB #191 2,996,196 copies sold

ATYCLB #71 3,232,056 copies sold

But it should be on top 200 on most other charts. I reckon worldwide sales for this week are around 15k (it's lowest yet).

& i just read in BB magazine that overall US album sales in 2005 were 21% down on 2000.... surely Bomb would now be on at least 3.6m if it was released at same time as '...Leave Behind'.

Spain :
ABOY # 6 (# 8)

UK : Bomb still out of top 200 but with overall artist album sales going up by 18.2% it probably still sold another 800-1000. So total est. sales to date = 1,202,000

Also in UK, Sometimes went up 3 spots to # 222 (# 225)

& i just read in BB magazine that overall US album sales in 2005 were 21% down on 2000.... surely Bomb would now be on at least 3.6m if it was released at same time as '...Leave Behind'.

In fact that was in Rolling Stone magazine (with Neil Young on the front) & it also pointed out that as per SoundScan the top 10 albums of 2005 were 50% down on the top 10 albums of 2000 :

In 2000 NSyncs No strings Attached was the # 1 best seller with 9.9m whereas in 2005 Mariah Carey's The Emancipation Of Mimi was # 1 with just 5.0m. Also, in 2000 The Beatles' One was 6th with 5.1m whereas in 2005 Coldplay's X&Y was 6th with just 2.6m.

So does anyone know, as per SoundScan, what the EOY # 19 album sold in 2000 & the EOY # 73 album sold in 2001 ? then we'll know exactly how well Bomb has done, at this point, compared with ATYCLB.

... just found the answer :

- the # 19 album sold 2.8m in 2000 compared with 2.156m for Bomb, at # 19, in 2004.
- the # 73 album in 2001 sold 1.25m compared with 828k for Bomb, at # 73, in 2005.

So Bomb would have actually sold 4,050,000 in the US at this point back in 2002 compared with the 3,232,000 for ATYCLB. Incredible !!

While OOTS did not show up on any Billboard charts this past week, the B/O 1980-90 did come in at #40 on the Pop Catalog Top 50 Album Chart.

But it should be on top 200 on most other charts. I reckon worldwide sales for this week are around 15k (it's lowest yet).

Perhaps, but since several countries don't report such chart positions, there is no way to know for sure. I think 8k to 10k is probably more accurate.

With respect, i really think you're underestimating ROW sales : Bomb sold 6k in US & UK alone for this week & we know these 2 countries usually make up roughly 45% of U2's total album sales. And Bomb is no exception - the raw sales data for each week proves this.

In fact in Week 41 at Mediatraffic Bomb sold precisely 31k (at # 40) & of that total only approx 7k (22%) was sold in UK & US (it dropped out of BB200 that week with approx 5k, whilst in UK it was # 110 with approx 1,800). The same is true for the previous few weeks : eg. Week 36 at MT : approx 48k sold overall but only approx 11k in US (5,634) & UK (approx 5,500).

And Bomb is almost certainly still in the top 200/150 in Canada, Australia, Italy, Holland, Belgium (etc...) as it's only just dropped off their top 100's.

10k absolute minimum, 15k max.

The fact of the matter is, BOMB was only on one chart in week 60, the USA chart at #191 with just under 5,000 copies sold. It would be a mistake to presume sales levels in other countries when the album is not even charted there. At the very least, an estimate made should be extremely conservative.

I understand what the album sold in the weeks you sited for Mediatraffic, but that was when the album was still charting in several other countries around the world.

Over the past 8 weeks, I'd say the BOMB has been getting 50% or more of its sales from the United States. Without specific sales information from other countries or chart information, its better to underestimate sales than risk overestimating sales. Otherwise, without any chart information, you could presume indefinitely that BOMB is selling 10,000 copies a week outside the United States. Thats a half a million over a year. In this day and age, when an album drops from the chart, it is usually done selling in significant quantities. I'm confident that ATYCLB does not sell more than 100,000 to 150,000 copies a year worldwide.

So with BOMB charting in zero other countries around the world in week 60, I would not estimate sales outside the United States to be more than the 5,000 copies it sold in the USA. In fact, saying it sold 10,000 copies in week 60 might be generous.

But it's only # 191 in US & we only have the top 200 charts for US, UK, France & Japan. The previous week it was # 62 in Italy, # 99 in Holland etc... So Bomb clearly is still on ROW top 200 charts (& now even back on top 200 in UK !)

& think about it : so far 'only' about 30% of Bomb's total sales have actually come from the US.

Thats true, but I think its inaccurate to use the past year's sales ratio of BOMB in the USA to the rest of the world in order to estimate current sales. I think when estimating current sales, one should tie their estimates to chart information. Without such information one is making estimates based on pratically nothing. If BOMB stays in the upper reaches of the top 200 in the USA selling 5,000 copies a week, but is not charted anywhere else in the world regardless of the number of positions listed on the particular chart, it would be a mistake to presume that it was selling 10,000 copies a week outside the United States.

Its better to underestimate sales when there is so little information than to overestimate sales and end up with an inaccurate and inflated total after several weeks.

But i have the actual overall sales figures, written down & in my database, for each of the 41wks that Bomb was on the Mediatraffic chart & not once did Bomb sell 50-60% of it's weekly total in the US... in fact no where near ! the most was 42% (in Week 6 : 827k with 350,013 in US) whilst the average was 25-35%.

Underestimating at the expense of estimating the actual likely figure (10-15k), based on the factual sales data & chart positions, just seems to be illogical & wrong... just my opinion, of course.

I understand that, but you can't simply extrapolate the sales ratio in any of the first 41 weeks to represent what the ratio might be in week 60. In week 60 we only know one thing for sure, and thats that BOMB was at #191 with 5,000 sales and was not charted in any other country(at least not in the available charts). I would not even attempt to make an estimate for week 60 if BOMB did not chart in the USA or any other country.

One can't accurately estimate what an album is selling in a particular country or around the world without chart information. For example, how many albums do you think BOY sold worldwide last week? If BOMB can sell 10,000 copies outside the United States without charting anywhere, then so could BOY.

The fact is, we really don't know what the album sold in week 60 worldwide and there is no way to accurately estimate what it sold. Its possible it could have sold 15,000 copies, but its equally possible it could have sold as little as 10,000 copies. In a situation like that, when each figure is equally likely because of so little information, I'm going to go with the smaller figure.

I just think that we have enough chart info to estimate that it sold more than 8-10k for this week, that's all...

If Boy was charting in the same way that HTDAAB has been / is then an estimate of 10-15k would also be credible. As it isn't & hasn't for years i wouldn't even begin to estimate that number.
