Week 52

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Unfortunatley the situation isn't quite the same in the UK this week as Bomb, surprisingly, fails to re-enter the top 200 & Vertigo finally, after a massive 44 week run, drops off the top 250 singles chart :

Albums :
Best of 80-90 # 177 (# 172)

Singles :
ABOY # 111 (# 92)

ps - i still think Bomb sold another 1,000...so total est. UK sales now = 1,195,000

Re: Billboard numbers

I guess everyone knows by now but just in case, there IS a video for OOTS and an awesome one it is! One of U2´s finest ever.

I think this increases the chances for MTV to put it in heavy rotation.

It's already been noted by SOLDATTI that HTDAAB is at 196 on the BB Hot 200 Album Chart. Other charts where U2 made the cut include:

B/O 1980-90 re-enters Pop Catalog chart at 19
B/O 1980-90 re-enters Top 200 Comprehensive album chart at 158
Vertigo 2005: Live from Chicago debuts at #72 on BB's European Top 100 Albums Chart (guess DVD's are live albums today...)

ABOY is the only single on Billboard this week, rising 18 spots on the European Top 100 Singles chart to 64 in it's sixth week.

As for the prospects for OOTS making onto Billboard, I do think it will chart on BB's Adult Top 40 chart, doing better than COBL's three week run. If it crosses over to modern rock, then it has a chance to crack the Hot 100 like Sometimes did...but if it crosses over to mainstream radio and makes it to the Top 5 of the Adult Top 40 chart, then it has a chance for a decent run on the Hot 100. With only a promo CD and no video, I admit this is a longshot. The song is off to a fast start though, even if it is just on the traditional U2 friendly formats.

Happy T-day to everyone...I'll watch for any big gains made by OOTS on radio charts and keep you posted.

is the video the live performance thats in the ipod advert? if so i dont think its anything special, though havent seen it all.

and i the video just in the US at the moment?

Not at all!
It´s the Catherine Owens version.
If you haven´t seen it already, trust me you WANT to watch it!
I don´t have any link here right now but I´m sure you will find several if you check the general discussion board.

Stunning stuff ...

Zoovation,

Here are the full Belgium chart runs (remember that there are 2 separate charts) :

Flanders (pop : 6M) : 47, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 6, 6, 4, 2, 3, 2, 1, 1, 1, 4, 8, 6, 11, 10, 9, 9, 9, 13, 17, 18, 16, 20, 23, 8, 6, 6, 8, 16, 14, 16, 18, 19, 21, 33, 36, 41, 46, x (i think it dropped out of top 50 this week)

Wallonie (pop : 3M) : 4, 2, 2, 3, 4, 4, 6, 11, 10, 7, 6, 5, 5, 7, 17, 19, 20, 24, 25, 22, 24, 23, 25, 22, 24, 23, 25, 28, 32, 39, 37, 36, 17, 11, 13, 20, 21, 20, 23, 32, 34, 30, 30, 44, 44, x (out of top 50)

Also, the Japan figure was 244,334 up to & including week 20, when it was # 216 with sales of 1,160...it then dropped off the top 300 in week 21 but sales of at least / about 250K are now most likely.

Those Billboard numbers are really quite impressive... & Best Of 80-90 actually increased by 104% last week with sales of 9,700 ! It's total US sales are now 2,608,800

& the rest of U2's back catalogue sold another 10,300 copies

thx again to Hanboo at UKMIX for the info.

A question: these sales are about the "standard" version of Best Of 80/90?
Because I know there are two certifications, both double platinum: one for the "standard" version and the other one for the "b-sides" version...

Amazon.com Charts: Bomb #59

I think there is a good chance to see the bomb for a second week in the BB 200.

Yes I agree

Yesterday, after seeing the OOTS i-pod add for the 6th time, I did go to Amazon.com where I was amazed to see HTDAAB up to 45, and the two Best Of's were 97 and 99, respectively. I have come to expect the first Best Of to be a perrenial catalog top seller, but the 2nd one is just too recent, IMO, to compel many casual fans to purchase. However, as time marches on and U2 continue to gain new fans and younger fans, I do think the 2nd Best Of will end up being a steady seller and both compilations will be the easiest way for new generations of fans to learn about U2 w/o buying multiple back catalog albums.

Anyway, back to your post...I think you are spot on and that HTDAAB will again be in the BB Hot 100. More importantly, sales should continue to surge quite a bit, and there are a lot of things going on right now that could easily propel the Bomb up the charts. Also, I am beginning to think that we'll see the 1st B/O joined on the Pop Catalog chart by the 2nd B/O and maybe even a studio album or two if the grammy awards come through for U2. The legend of U2 should continue to grow tremendously, too, as Vertigo becomes the all-time highest grossing tour with the 4th leg and beyond.

My pick for next week's HTDAAB Billboard chart position: 180

Not sure where to stick this interesting bit of information, but here will do...

I found out today that U2 have sold 850,000 albums in New Zealand, and their top seller is the Joshua Tree with 210,000, which is a STAGGERING amount considering the population.
Platinum in NZ is 15,000 so it's 14x platinum!

Very interesting. Do you have also details of the other albums?

No, I just got that from the bottom of an interview the Edge did with a New Zealand reporter. There is a link to it in the "U2 Tour Dates" section. I do know that Bomb is 3xplat though...

There are three words that quickly and easily explain why The Joshua Tree was such a huge seller in New Zealand: One Tree Hill.

Wow !...14xPlat for JT in NZ, that is pretty amazing : 210K is the equivalent of 3.150M in UK (or 10xPlat) ! & 850,000 albums is also a heck of a lot : that's the equivalent of 13M in the UK / 64M in the US.

thx for the info CVT

Germany :

Chicago DVD enters at # 20 on the top 100 album chart (strange)...so i guess with sales of about 10-15K (?).
ABOY # 76 (# 75)

In Germany the DVDs can also chart in the Album charts which is very strange.

After only 1 week, The Chicago DVD was certified with gold which means that it sold more than 25k.

about usa: do you think that TANKSGIVIN' DAY can help the Bomb to stay in top 200 Bb?It's a day with music promotions (cd a small prices...special cd + dvd...ecc.)....with OOTS single/video i hope they will stay in top 200 until grammy nominations in 8 december!

ybird3k last year bomb has been released in TG day....and i agree with you....it's a week with sells highter than x-mast week....somone can confirm this?

shockingly good sales and increase for 80-90, 2,680,800 is that really all its sold? worldwide sales of 14-15M with only 2.6M from the US?

so the total U2 catalogue in the states last week including bomb sold about 28k

2,680,800 is only for the single disc edition...the 2 disc edition was certified 2xPlat in US way back in Dec 1998, so it should have sold at least 1M by now. So total US sales should now be at least 3.7M.
