week 34

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
I have a feeling album sales will see a boost in North America this week. Its in the 50s in Canada and the US right now on itunes (about 24hrs after the youtube concert) yet in other places where U2 is more popular (UK, Ireland) its not even on the top albums chart. That just tells me that this album didn't sell well because of lack of exposure rather than people not liking it. U2 got more than enough exposure in Europe on the other hand.

What you mean the album "didn't sell well"? Its the biggest selling album of the year worldwide with the exception of Lady GaGa!

Actually, any effect from the Rose Bowl/You Tube performance will be seen in Week 35. Billboard tracks through Sunday and, of course, the concert was Sunday night. So if there was a sales boost, it would start on Monday, meaning Week 35. Therefore, hopefully there'll be a boost then.

As for exposure, I think U2 did a good job. David Letterman, SNL, Blackberry ad, You Tube, wildly successful tour - it's all there. The album simply didn't produce that signature hit - like BD or "Vertigo" - that carried those respective albums for months. Whether this was "conspiracy" against U2 or whether the songs just didn't catch on, I don't know. I find the songs on NLOTH to be far better than on ATYCLB and HTDAAB (and I enjoy those albums quite a bit), but I also accept that NLOTH is a more "challenging" album that takes a while to get into.

But also, in terms of sales, I'm not sure how much better NLOTH could have done. It's already in the Top 5 in the U.S. and one of a few albums that broke 1M in sales. The top selling album released in the U.S. this year has only sold 1.5M copies! In other words, even with a big hit, the album may have only sold a few hundred thousand more copies - not another million or two. It's just the way the music industry is not. iTunes has helped legitamize downloading, but has now encouraged cherry picking - meaning albums suffer.

Bottom line, compared to past eras, NLOTH hasn't sold well. But in today's world, NLOTH has done very - if not extremely - well.

Best sellers for bands or groups currently on the Billboard 200 USA - over 1 million:

11/07/09 chart:

COLDPLAY VIVA LA VIDA 2,589,476
NICKELBACK DARK HORSE 2,360,614

Its incredible that there are currently only 7 bands with albums in the top 200 at the moment with total sales of over one million copies.

Here is the possibly slightly more updated list from mediatraffic. Can't confirm that it is, but it might be:

Global sales 2009 to date:

Lady Gaga The Fame 3.860.000
U2 No Line On The Horizon 3.479.500
Michael Jackson Thriller 3.195.000
Kings Of Leon Only By The Night 3.076.000
Michael Jackson Number Ones (since 2009) 2.996.000
Black Eyed Peas The E.N.D. 2.864.000

Taylor Swift Fearless 2.799.500

Beyoncé I Am... Sasha Fierce 2.617.500

If this is accurate, it looks like NLOTH is selling 16,500 copies a week worldwide now.

At this pace, Mediatraffic 2009 sales for NLOTH will be in excess of 3.6 M. Applying the infamous 7.5% correction yields 3.9 M.
That´s about 100 K shy of our predictions. I wonder if the holidays can boost sales so as the album is able to cross the 4 M mark at the end of the year.
