This is actually incorrect

ALL THAT YOU CAN'T LEAVE BEHIND
UK Date: 11/11/2000 - Run: *1*-4-10-20-25-26-28-29- (8 wsf)
06/01/2001: 29-23-17-12-12- 7-7-8-10-3-6-8-12-14-23-30-39-41-49-54-65-60-53-47-47-58-65-56-47-37-30-23-22-15-16-23-34-42-53-64-0-0-74-60-50-57-69-0-71-54-61-60- (57 wsf)
05/01/2002: 64-56-60 (60-48c/10-9c/1 wks)
Re #01: 09/03/2002 64-74 (2 wks)
Total # of re-entries: 3 (Top 10: 1)
Total # of weeks: 62-48c (Top 10: 10-9c, Top 20: 18 Top 40: 33, #1: 1) US:#3/94/3

In its 20th week ATYCLB was at #8 therefore far higher up the charts than HTDAAB is at this stage.

This is quite true...however, I'm not sure of all the reasons that caused this spike. As you can see from the chart run, ATYCLB had dropped to #29, then jumped back up to #3.

I do recall U2 playing on a U.K. TV show and winning an award. This had the same effect that the Grammy Awards do in the U.S. - and it caused the album to fly up the charts. I also think that U2 released "Stuck..." around this time, which debuted at #2. So the two combined helped ATYCLB move up the charts.

HTDAAB had a different single release pattern and was also released later in the year (as compared to ATYCLB). U2 won no major awards either. As such, there was no reason for a spike. Therefore, one can't really compare the two albums directly as different events (tour, TV appearances, awards, singles) will have an effect on the album's chart position.

When the next single is released and U2 hits Europe this summer, HTDAAB will fly back up the charts - it's a given. It'll probably return to #1 in Ireland and I wouldn't be surprised to see top 10, if not top 5 even, in the U.K.

u2 were awarded a lifetime achievement award at The Brits - and played live. 3 of the 4 songs performed then shown on national TV the day afterwards. U2 then sold 200k CDs (mainly ATYCLB - but other CDs also charted) over the following 2 weeks in the UK.

SIAMYCGOO was responsible for pushin ATYCLB up the charts back into the top 20 and then top 10. After this U2 received the "Outstanding Contrabution To Music" award at the brits and this pushed the album up to number 3

When the Elevation tour came to the UK the album moved back up to as high as # 15. However I think that this tour will have a far bigger effect on album sales as they are playing far bigger venues and to a far bigger audience. With the release of the next single around this time, don't be surprised if the album moved back up to #1. It certainly is possible.

How about the rest of the world?

Yes, I hope you're proved correct.

BTW - What do you think of my estimated Mediatraffic figures up to & inc. W.20 (of MT chart)? That's :

6538M + 162K + 140K + 100K + 96K + 90K + 98K = current overall MT figure of 7224M + 93K (W.20 on MT chart) = 7317M

I thought it looked very accurate, especially with the supporting evidence you gave for your figures. But I guess Mediatraffic is claiming 7,224,000. Perhaps they will correct it on the next recount.

What about the sales - what's your estimation?

#16 Will Smith has sold alone in USA the last week 60k!

Hi Fitz,

Yes...Well...Will Smith also sold around 10K in the UK last week. So I would think he sold at least 90K at Mediatraffic last week. Now thanks to Soldatti we have exact US sales figures for the BB top 200 (see N.American W.20 chart info. post). So I think we can make some good estimations :

The one definite estimation is that U2 must have sold over 60K last week because 112 Pleasure & Pain sold 60K in US and are at #27 on MT chart & Lisa Marie Presley debuted at #28 (56K in US). So I think U2 sold 70 - 80K (probably 80K) of HTDAAB.

This means that 'the bomb' SHOULD have sold at least 7387M overall. But Mediatraffic have now got me completely confused :

They say Green Day's American Idiot sold 160K (-8%) and then say "...in 29 weeks on the tally American Idiot sold nearly 7.1M copies." But if that's the case then American Idiot should have sold 6986 (last weeks overall MT total) + 160K = 7146M (well over 7.1M!).

Mediatraffic are clearly making mistakes and this therefore leads me to conclude that, like U2, MT have got GD's overall figure completley wrong - American Idiot should now have sold :
6986M + 174K (last weeks figure) +160K (this weeks figure) = 7320M.

Can anyone else shed some light on this? (I think I need to get some sleep!)

OK - I've had some sleep and....

Will Smith was also at #10 in Canada this week so that's maybe another 5K. But he dosen't seem to be on any other charts (apart from US, UK & Canada). So I'm sure he would have sold at least 76K at Mediatraffic. Which means that in W.21 at MT 'the bomb' should have sold at least 60-75K. If I was to go for an actual figure I would now say 75K. So this would mean an overall figure of :

either : 7224M + 75K = 7299M (what I think MT probably thinks)

or : 7317M + 75K = 7392M (what I think MT should think)

Anyone agree / got a better idea?
