U2 drops to a respectable No 6 this week - behind 3 new entries (so just a drop of 1 place in respect of existing CDs - in this case David Gray). However, this is just the triple CD/DVD version - as the single CD version enters at 37 - quite low. This shows, I think, that some record stores are not selling the single CD version yet, not until they have exhausted the 3 CD/DVD version.

U2 are knocked off the Top spot in Australia to No.2 by Pearl Jam "RIOT ACT", which debuts at #1. Although U2 is displayed to still have 2X Platinum....it won't be long before they've a 3X certification.
The Best of the 80s drops from #34 to #43 this week. Sorry, i forgot to post thatlast week. This it's 90th (non consecutive) week on the Aria charts and is currently certified as 5X platinum.

Well, if we can put any confidence in Hits - it looks like U2 will land somewhere between number 9 and number 12 on the U.S. charts with sales of between 105,000 to 120,000. We shall see how it pans out.

With about 52% in Hits is reporting that TBO1990-2000 has about 76K in sales. This would mean U2 would have about 120-150K in total (on the second day U2 often has lower sales). However, this may mean nothing for the actual Soundscan (Billboard) charts as I don't know if Hits counts both versions together or if they make the distinction between the 2. Billboard does (or at least, they did with the 1st Best Of), so we'll see another debut by U2 this week. I still hope the ltd. edition doesn't drop too much.

Yikes, sure #6 is a good position, but for a "Best Of U2", i would've expected that it at least stayed in the Top 5. Pity that ain't the positions in the USA
. That would've been a nice surprise.
I'm also surprised at how low The Best Of single disk debuted. #37, is far below what I would have guessed (by about 30 positions!). Oh well.....guess we'll have to wait 'til their next real album for a Chart topping debut

No 1 in Europe
According to a report in Billboard Best Of is at No1 in Europe this week - up from 74 (this low number probably relating to sales e.g. in Italy, before the official release date). I would expect initial certification by IFPI to be around the 2m mark.
I expect the Robbie Williams album to replace U2 in the top spot next week.

Hits numbers are in and Best of comes in at number 11 on the chart with sales of a little over 107,000. This is a little dissapointing even considering the five new releases that debuted in the top 5.
What is more disconcerting is the fact that single disc best of is nowhere in the top 50. Not exactly sure what this means, but it will be sorted out on Thursday with Billboard.
U2 may still end up being in the top 10 for another week on the Billboard chart. They were only a few copies away from the number 10 album on the Hits chart.

According to VH1.com, the single disc debuts at #34. Not bad considering the single best of 1980-1900 debut at #45. Phil Collin new album debuts at #30 with 51,000 sold, so I'd estimate the 1990-2000 single disc sold btwn 50,000-48,000.

Here are Week 2's U.S. SoundScan numbers.
As we all know, the 90's "Best Of + B-sides" debuted at #3 last week with 184,804 copies sold in the U.S.
This week, this special edition plummets to #27 with 59,694 copies sold!
I have to admit, I am surprised at this huge drop. The 80's "Best Of + B-sides" dropped from #2 to #5 in its second week 4 years ago.
Of course, the most likely reason for the huge drop is that the 90's "Best Of" single CD disk debuts at #34 with 37,922 copies sold. I imagine that stores like Best Buy no longer have their special prices. As such, those interested in the 90's "Best Of" may have opted for the cheaper 1-disc CD instead of the more pricey 3-disc version.
Combined, the 90's "Best Of" sold 97,616 copies last week. If the two versions were combined, that would place it at #13 on the charts.
Before anyone gets too worked up over the drop of the B-sides version of the CD set, recall that it, in theory, is supposed to be a one-week promotion only. So stores might not be stocking up much on this item. Second, other big names took a big hit too. Justin Timberlake's "Justified" sold 439K copies last week, but drops to 189K copies this week. Chart-wise, that only drops him to #4, but that's a huge 250K drop.
It is my guess that in the coming weeks, both versions of the 90's "Best Of" will level off. With the holiday season almost upon us, we should see pretty strong sales through New Year's. My guess is around 50K if not as much as 75K in the coming weeks.
The 80's "Best Of" received a mini-boost last week, jumping from #55 to #43 with sales of 5,007 copies. However, it drops down to #65 this week with sales of 4,560 copies. To me, this is rather typical of the week-to-week fluctuation seen by this album, so no need for praise or concern.
ATYCLB may not have a long-life in the Catalog charts. It debuted at #91 two weeks ago. Last week, it dropped to #104 despite a sales boost to 3,018 copies. This week, it drops to #182 with 2,529 copies sold. This really isn't that big of a drop, but given the competition at this time of year, if ATYCLB's sales don't pick up soon, it may be out of the Top 200 on the Catalog charts by next week!
The one bit of positive news is that the 90's "Best Of + B-sides" is the #1 internet album. It was #2 last week behind Dave Matthews Band. DMB's album sold nearly 15K copies via the internet last week to rank #1. However, it dropped to a mere 1K copies this week to rank #28. U2's album sold 9K copies last week to rank #2 on the internet charts. It drops to 3.3K copies this week, which is just high enough to leap to #1 ahead of Pearl Jam's new album. The "Best Of" without b-sides debuts at #13 on the internet charts with 1.7K copies sold.
The VHS and DVD versions of the "Elevation" video both sell around 800 copies this week.

Its shocking that the Best of 1990-2000/ B-sides only sold 60,000 copies this past week. This is less than 1/3 the total of the opening week. Best of 1980-1990 also had the first week special promotion around, but its sales in the following week were much stronger than this. I'm wondering now if the 1990-2000/B-sides will be able to get to the 1 million mark in soundscan sales the first week. This is really a surprise and while I thought sales would be about half of the Best of 1980-1990, it looks like sales will probably be about 1/3, in the USA that is. It will be easy for the package to get a gold certification since with two disc inside it only takes 250,000 sold to do so. In fact, its already there now in numbers. But selling 1 million copies for that double platinum award for two-disc sets is going to be tough to achieve I think. Of course it will eventually.
ATYCLB is actually hurt by the Best of 1990-2000 in the long run, since it takes the two most popular songs from that album and combines it with the hits. People looking for Beautiful Day and Stuck In A Moment, will probably be more tempted to buy the best of....rather than ATYCLB. ATYCLB will disapear probably until January or February. But it might not come back if it can't maintain sales above 2,000 copies. Its already down to 2,500 but this usually means a chart position much higher than 182.
Best of 1990-2000 probably insures we won't see Achtung Baby on the Catalog charts except in rare circumstances. Even during 2001 when U2 success was high, and the only way to get the hits of Achtung Baby was to buy Achtung Baby, it only entered the Catalog chart on a few occasions.
From here on out looks like Best of 1980-1990 and eventually Best of 1990-2000 will be U2s catalog chart regulars. Also the Joshua Tree will be on there when U2 is on tour and promoting itself in a major way.

In its second week The Best Of cannot improve on its last position. But that would have been difficult as the album debuted at #1. Fortunately, the album can hold this position as it is #1 for a second week! In sales it seems as if it is performing better than last week. In its first week it had an advantage of 45% over the #2. This week the advantage increases to 65% (over a new #2, Come With Me by Norah Jones). Keep in mind that the 2 versions (single disc + ltd. edition) are counted together. Still, another week at #1, yippie!
Here is the chart run for The Best Of 1990-2000 (16-11-02):

This is U2's 8th #1 album in the Netherlands. Interestingly, 2 different sources confirm this but they mention different albums that have reached #1. So maybe U2 even had 9 #1 albums! Using your reasoning, then your logic is faulty. This forum ("Peeling off the Dollar Bills") is designed for one thing and only one thing - charts and sales information. It's FAR easier to go to this forum if you want to check on sales and charts than to go rummaging through all the nonsense in EYKIW. If people have so precious little time to read things (as you suggest), then let's have them go directly to the forum that contains the info. they want - not hunt and search for it in a more general forum.
As a moderator, it is my job to shift topics around to the appropriate forums. Pearl Jam seems to be off to a good start. Riot Act sold almost 170,000 copies, which isn't too much lower than their last album. Binaural, which came out two and a half years ago and sold 226,000 copies it's first week. A slight note, Pearl Jam's Ten received quite a boost in the Catalog Charts thanks to the new release. I'm so glad it's back ahead of Nirvana's Nevermind again.
