I'm surprised HTDAAB has fallen so much in Europe :( i thought i would have stayed the same or even increased seein the USA & Canada charts. also 'sometimes' dropping, though i suppose thats to be expected.

why are there 2 diffrent versions of Vertigo available in Canada?
and why is it that U2 singles are doing so well there, unlike in the US?

U.S. airplay/BB/video thread

Dr. Who,

Go to http://forum.interference.com/t120276.html for the U.S BB chart results. It's in there. I separated the U.S. results from the regular Week xx updates since I am posting so much about airplay only charts versus BB, sales versus airplay, etc. I posted the Canada and Europe BB charts in the regular week 18 thread since they are not U.S. specific.

You really can't compare the Canadian Singles SALES chart to the U.S., as we don't have any CD's for sale. This chart always favors U2 in Canada, even though single sales may just be 300 or so per week. It's a weak market, and airplay is what helps album sales.

You have to look at the airplay charts to compare the U.S. to Canada, and whether you use BB or the airplay charts, it's difficult to do because of the multiple formats. One equalizer is to use Radio and Records, which is the same exact database and uses the same method to chart songs - actual airplay from ALL the radio stations country-wide.

I post these charts regularly, and U2 gets plenty of airplay in both countries. Here's how it looked this week, and ABOY already peaked at #2 on the Rock and Active Rock Formats in the U.S.

************************************************

American Rock Radio Top 40:

Sometimes rises from 40 to 37 on American Rock Radio's Top 40. Definitely good news, as ABOY and Vertigo cracked this chart, but not for long and neither got very far; Vertigo stayed on the chart for 6 weeks.

HAC format:

Sometimes rises from 21 to 18 with a bullet and 1228 plays

Active Rock format:

Sometimes at #3 on "New and Active Adds" w/67 plays

Rock format:

ABOY falls 4 spots to 22 w/183 plays
Sometimes at #3 on "New and Active Adds" w/76 plays

Alternative format:

Sometimes falls from 28 to 33 but does increase to 528 plays

Pop radio format:

Sometimes at #2 for "Most Adds" with +42

Triple A format:

Sometimes remains at #2 but increases plays to 502 - close to #1
Sometimes #5 with most increased plays with +60
Vertigo #4 on most played recurrents with 146 plays

Summary - Sometimes is in it's 2nd to 5th week on the charts, depending on the format. It has stalled here and there but the general direction has been up. It is also already "crossed over" into every major format except Adult Contemporary. All in all, the data from Media Guide seemed to show the song could be peaking, and the Alternative Chart from R&R showed an even bigger 5 spot drop. However, the # of plays between songs on that chart are in the 5-10 spins range, and Sometimes did have an increase in Plays even though it slipped. I'm optimistic that Sometimes debuts on the BB Hot 100 tomorrow, too.

Request the song! U2's tour is going to be in the news constantly, and the opening night got glowing reviews save for one from a local paper...all the big circulations gave it top marks. Combine that with a hit song and U2 can pull a "Green Day", who is also on a Worldwide tour and has a 2nd top hit rock ballad.

BB results to be posted tomorrow. Here are the R&R radio play charts for Canada:

Rock format:

ABOY falls from #1 to #3 w/431 plays
Sometimes rises from 29 to 25 w/159 plays

HAC format:

Somtimes rise from 15 to 10 with a bullet and 443 plays
Sometimes at #2 w/most increase plays at +86, 2 plays from #1

R.O.W. charts

I'm trying just to list country charts that have not already been addressed...and I'm using the Charts all over the World database, going with what looks like the most "official" country chart available. Sometimes has really taken a dive in most countries...

Germany HTDAAB falls from 14 to 16 week of March 28
Sometimes falls from 23 to 44

Austria HTDAAB falls from 15 to 22
Sometimes falls from 25 to 41

Poland HTDAAB falls from 15 to 38

Lithuania Sometimes falls from 9 to 11

Spain HTDAAB falls from 29 to 34
Sometimes stays at #5

Croatia Sometimes holds at #4

Hungary HTDAAB rises from 40 to 32

Yugoslavia Sometimes falls from 11 to 16

Ukraine Sometimes holds at 12

Costa Rica Vertigo falls from 4 to 6

Singapore Vertigo fall from 5 to 10

South Africa Sometimes falls from 10 to 21

That's all I could find. Let's hope the N.A. tour can help keep U2 on the World charts, and then the 2nd leg helps Europe sales to do the same.

not really a surprise. UK & Germany the biggest markets in Europe and Bomb slipping in both these cmarkets- indeed in the UK I expect a further fall this week. This is likely to continue until June when the tour hits Europe - unless of course the record company get their act together in respect of marketing & promotion.

actually in Europe being #14 after more than 4 months is a good result...was #14 also in the US then HTDAAB would be in much higher position in the world chart.

and anyway HTDAAB in Europe is performing much better than ATYCLB...especially in UK and Germany.

World Chart - Sometimes Falls from #10 to #15, :( .

Bomb doing very well, with an increase in sales due to the big increase in the USA. though most albums in top 15 also had a sales increase.

They don't give the sales figures anymore, to many people want to know them.

We know the figures till week 12: 6,538,000

Here is my e s t i m a t i o n since that:
Week 13: 162,000
Week 14: 140,000
Week 15: 94,000
Week 16: 91,000
Week 17: 85,000
Week 18: 90,000

Total: 7,200,000

Remember that worldtraffic only have about 90-95 % of the real world figures, so the actual figures should be almost at 8m!!

Yep, my estimate for what Media Traffic numbers are is close to what you have. I estimate that BOMB's total sales as tabulated by media traffic are about 7,250,000.

I wish they would update the "all time" chart.

Doctor Who, or someone else who knows, what were the chart positions for those songs that didn't break the Top 100 (Walk On, Elevation, ABOY, etc....) ?

Thanks!

BTW, if my calculations are correct, U2's album has now also sold more than 500,000 copies in the USA this year alone (probably around 520,000 now). It's nice to have a big selling album in a given year, but if that album can sell a lot in more than one year, you've got a winner. :)

anyone know how many copies did ATYCLB sell in the USA in each of the years - 2000, 2001, 2002 ?
and also how many worldwide, in the same years?

By the summer of 2002, ATYCLB had sold over 11 million copies worldwide. I do not have a breakdown of sales worldwide for each of the years, but the album was certified with 3 million sales for Europe in December of 2000. By February 2002, it was certified for 4 million in sales in Europe by the IFPI.

For the United States, here are the exact Soundscan figures that Dr. Who provided for the first 93 weeks of ATYCLB chart run in the United States. Week 93 took place in August of 2002.

Approximate weekly sales for the first 93 weeks of ATYCLB are (rounded to nearest thousand):

428,000 + 176,000 + 119,000 + 125,000 + 100,000 + 113,000 + 154,000 + 259,000 + 108,000 + 66,000 + 59,000 + 57,000+ 47,000 + 44,000 + 41,000 + 49,000 + 85,000 + 74,000 + 54,000 + 48,000 + 43,000 + 39,000 + 37,000 + 39,000 + 30,000 + 29,000 + 26,000 + 29,000 + 25,000 + 24,000 + 27,000 + 30,000 + 31,000 + 24,000 + 22,000 + 18,000 + 19,000 + 17,000 + 17,000 + 15,000 + 14,000 + 14,000 + 13,000 + 13,000 + 16,000 + 19,000 + 21,000 + 23,000 + 22,000 + 22,000 + 24,000 + 25,000 + 24,000 + 23,000 + 21,000 + 28,000 + 28,000 + 30,000 + 46,000 + 72,000 + 42,000 + 28,000 + 26,000 + 19,000 + 20,000 + 19,000 + 46,000 + 53,000 + 36,000 + 81,000 + 56,000 + 40,000 + 32,000 + 29,000 + 22,000 + 18,000 + 14,000 + 13,000 + 11,000 + 12,000 + 9,000 + 9,000 + 9,000 + 8,000 + 11,000 + 9,000 + 8,000 + 8,000 + 7,000 + 6,000 + 6,000 + 6000 + 6,000

Exact U.S. SoundScan sales are: 3,953,220 copies (note that the sum of the weekly estimates is off from the exact total due to rounding). The album is now a mere 46,780 copies from the 4x Platinum mark in the U.S. and has crossed the 3.95 million mark.

Oh, I went and found the other stuff in an old thread......

"Walk On" peaked at #118
and
"Elevation" peaked at #116
and
"Lemon" peaked at #103
and
"All Because of You" peaked at #101

I can't think of a single other song that would've been on the bubbling under chart.........so, I'm pretty sure that's all of them.........and of course, "Sometimes" is currently at #109, but I have a good feeling that it will crack the Top 100 shortly....

I think it's time for a compare between ATYCLB and HTDAAB:

ATYCLB HTDAAB

worldwide 12m 9m
USA 4,2m 2,6m
UK 1,1m 1,05m
Canada 500k 400k
Brasilia 375k 125k
Argentinia 60k 20k
Australia 280k 210k
NewZealand 45k 45k
Japan ? 242k
Germany 450k 300k
Spain 300k 200k
....

The biggest gap exists in USA, 50% of the wordlwide difference come from here.

What do you think, will be HTDAAB a bigger success than ATYCLB?
