3,2millions in 5 months in these times, it's pretty good :) God, 30years and still kicking ass. Fuck! They really are special

On September 25th is when I will see how special they really are...Here is a band that still makes great music and is still motivated to entertain their fans. I mean, they go to great lengths to build cool stage designs for their tours (POPMart, ZooTV and even Elevation and Vertigo were cool).

So that was over 3,2m a couple of weeks ago. I think that website mentioning 5 m sold (shipped?) could have been perfectly right.

Unfortunately, I didn't see any totals on that site so I don't know far ahead of the others they are.

the reason for the sales increase has been fathers day, so next week i expect to see a decrease. hopefully when the tour gets underway sales will increase, after the barcelona shows, NLOTH should shoot back up the spanish charts, #1?

looks like Jacko will be #1 in nearly every market this/next week, currently occupying the top 15 spots on amazon.com.

The actual results in the USA this week for NLOTH were the following:

63 (66) U2 NO LINE ON THE HORIZON 8,552 +11% 7,720 934,471

So, 8,552 sales in the USA this week which is an 11% increase over last weeks sales. NLOTH should past the 1 million mark in the USA in about 8 weeks at the current sales rate. There are only 3 albums in 2009 that have sold over 1 million copies in the USA half way through the year. The biggest seller in the USA for 2009 at this point is Taylor Swifts Fearless with 1,282,142 in sales.

Why not? the initial shipment is sold out and they shipped 2mln more, people will want to buy it during the tour...

2 million just seems like too much, the album is selling 40,000 a week, they're not gonna ship a year's shipment now, they'd only ship it in much smaller numbers, 3.5 is a lot more likely than 5 million

I think they've already sold 3,5 million. Some markets may have been over stocked, but others were not and those got additional shipments.

By the way, I was at a festival today (Parkpop (NL), the biggest free festival in Europe) and they had piles of No Line at one outlet for just 6 euro's. Person in front of me bought one

Does anyone else think a MJ album could be the best seller this year ?

World Top 50 Albums updated:

For the period June 15-21
NLOTH up from 25 to 24 with total sales of 42,700

As for the total album sales numbers...5 million shipped seems very plausible to me, as this album is selling very well in all cornes of the globe. Maybe that has always been the case with U2's music, and we just didn't have access to the information in the 80's and 90's that we do today.

NLOTH is doing very well in Southeast Asia, for example, as are the two singles that have been released so far...Magnificent is up from 16 to 11 on the "Top 20 Singles Chart" for Asia. The chart is shown on the same website as the album chart, and on the global singles chart, Magnificent continues it's somewhat erratic run by rising from 48 to 32 this week (Jun 15-21 update...same as world album chart). Also, the album is selling well in South America.

The countries listed by the United World Chart as being the "sources" for Global Sales figures is hardly exhaustive, and while the "World Top 50 Albums" chart lists a few more countries than the other chart as sales sources, it, too, does not cover the entire world.
I'm just saying that these global sales charts, as well as Billboard, cannot really really claim to know total worldwide sales. Access to that information, while much improved, has not kept up with global consumer access to purchase music. Given this, the only real way to know how many albums have been "sold" is to track to the total number shipped. While I don't think there have been 5 million individual purchases or downloads of NLOTH, the only completely accurate figures are shipments, and truth be told, once the album is shipped to retailers, it's basically sold from the record company's standpoint.

Anyway, with such a lengthy tour ahead, one that will probably play to a record number of fans in very large venues in numerous countries (large markets), I'd be surprised if there weren't at least 1.2 to 1.5 million copies of NLOTH available for sale. That's an inventory to sales ratio of around 30-35%, which seems normal to me (3.3M sold out of 5M shipped/for sale).

how would you compare NLOTH performance in asia/south america compared to previous U2 albums of recent years beLIEve? the singles are performing very well in asia it seems. is this a international singles chart or does it include all the J -pop songs also?

I really can't say...as I don't remember having access to this type of information with prior albums. The chart is published by 'The MTV Asia HitList Chart is compiled from record sales & radio airplay around South East Asia". It just shows the Top 20 songs. Boots was either released late in Asia, or it caught fire after the video, as it made it to the Top 5 on this chart and was at #10 just 3 weeks ago.

Magnificent has slipped from 11 to 14 this week on the chart. Songs like "Boom Boom Pow" are at #4 on this same chart, showing that the same "crap" that's popular in the U.S. is doing well in Asia. The big difference is that U2 also are popular in the "mainstream music scene in Asia" if you go by their recent performance on this regional singles chart.

Wow...France Top 100 Singles just updated, and Magnificent re-enters the chart in it's 6th total week at #15! Boots holds steady at #50.

The "tour effect" in Europe just might be magnificent for sales and singles performance after all...as this has to be related, and it's the size of the venues and the publicity surrounding the "360" stage that has me thinking that past tours, and how they affected sales, may not be comparable to how this one will play out.

Also, last week Magnificent slipped to #96 on the Eurochart Top 100 Singles, and appeared ready to fall off the chart after just 6 weeks. Today, it jumps up 64 spots to #32. Maybe the remixes are catching on, but me thinks it's mostly the tour effect kicking in a bit early. Next 2 months in Europe will be interesting for U2 on the charts.

How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb

Brazil 275,000
Mexico 100,000+
Argentina 120,000
Colombia 20,000

Around 600,000+ units sold in Latin America.

No Line On The Horizon

Brazil 95,000
Mexico 40,000+
Argentina 20,000+

Around 200,000 units sold in trhe region.

But I think that Believe is right, the album is doing very well in current context, compared to other regions.

sales are along way off HTDAAB in South America then

Yes, but remember how much the markets have declined since then. And the fact that their previous album was supported by a tour (they played in Latin America).

I suppose those Bomb numbers are total sales per now, 5 years on and with a supporting tour in South America behind it. I'm curious to see No Line's numbers 5 years from now. I think it's doing very very well.

The charts I have been referring to have been more about U2 singles success in Asia...and that's where I don't really have data to compare to past releases. If/when this tour hits South America, I feel pretty certain that NLOTH sales will be right up there with the best selling U2 albums in that region.

I dont suppose there are many albums sold in asia (apart from japan) are there any sales figures beLIEve?

I cant see how sales will increase 3times over due to the tour.
It would be like saying that NLOTH will have sold 900k by the time theyves finished the UK leg of 360.

But Bomb had 5 years, plus the album is still selling well in South America it's number 2 in weekly shipments in Argentina this week, or last week
