Week 11

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Don't forget the Grammies, the Hall of Fame Introduction. Then the tour will start and a 3rd single (i think Sometimes ore Miracle Drug - both have great hit potential). So HTDAAB is still on plan.

i dunno, sometimes has a great chance of being massive here in the UK, it is getting quite alot of airplay

Their singles always do quite well in the UK......like "Elevation", "Stuck" (and I think "Walk On") were all in the top five on the UK singles chart........however, here in the United States, they've had one top forty hit and then.......well, nothing......this has happened with the last two albums and I think it will happen again with HTDAAB. I could see "Sometimes" or "A Man And A Woman" doing quite well on Adult Contemporary or whatever......but not well enough to crack the Top 40......

are you now starting to come to the conclusion the album isnt such a big hit?, because to be fair i think the album has still done very well. just my thoughts of course

As Zoovation wrote (thanks!), where did I discuss the success or failure of HTDAAB in that post? I just said I was disappointed with the marketing for ABoY. The album is still doing great - it may have dropped a few places on the charts, but it rose in sales, and that's the important thing, IMO. As long as sales stay steady or improve, then the album will be fine.

However, I really felt ABoY, much like "Elevation", is this great rocking tune - perhaps even better than "Elevation". It's short, catchy and made for rock radio. Yet it's already dropping on the Modern Rock charts and is stagnant at a rather lowly #20 on the Mainstream Rock charts. What's going on? This song should have easily been a Top 10 hit on the Mainstream Rock charts and reached the Top 5 on the Modern Rock charts! This is a disappointment and I blame U2's marketing.

Dr. Who is right, ABOY seems on the way down, and Vertigo continues to be the most played song from HTDAAB. Maybe there is a backlash against U2 right now, but "Sometimes" is good enough to overcome that and be a hit. Bring it on U2!

HTDAAB falls to 31 from 28 on Billboard Top 200 albums
" " stays at #5 on download chart

ABOY drops from 6 to 8 on Modern Rock Tracks
ABOY stays at #20 on Mainstream Rock; had "AIRPOWER" lwk?
ABOY drops to 2 on "Bubbling Under", after going from 9-1 lw?
ABOY disappears from MTV video Top 20 - not surprised
ABOY dropped one spot from 12-13 on lw VH-1, update tomorrow

Vertigo drops from 44 to 47 on Hot 100
Vertigo stays at 25 on Mainstream Rock Tracks
Vertigo drops from 32 to 37 on Modern Rock Tracks
Vertigo drops from 12 to 13 on Adult Top 40
Vertigo drops from 19 to 26 on Top 50 downloaded songs

I tried to be optimisic about ABOY, but Dr. Who's been saying it was in trouble for weeks now. U2 needs to show some marketing flexibility and make Sometimes a worldwide release ASAP.

BeLIEve,

Since you have access to billboard, I wanted to know if you could post and article from Billboard.BIZ in the touring section that talks about the latest ticket sales success for U2 in North America and Europe. The article is found here:

ABOY play on VH-1

No problem.

ABOY rises one spot to #12 on the VH-1 Top 20 video countdown this week to gain back the spot it lost last week. I think ABOY's problem is the staying power of Vertigo. It's now being played a lot as we lead up to the Grammies. I think DJ's are playing both songs, but Vertigo is still the top pick.

If it wins all three Grammies, that's the only way I personally think Vertigo will linger on for much longer. On VH-1's Grammy special yesterday, I think they picked Vertigo over American Idiot for video, but A.I. over Vertigo for Best Rock Song and Best Rock performance. I would personally vote the complete opposite, but I can see a Green Day Sweep. However, U2 is on a Grammy role of late, so we'll see.

Hello,

I again waited a while before making this Dutch chart roundup. Besides the charts website there is another website that usually has some chart trivia of the songs/albums in the charts. I say usually, because this week they hadn't. Not that U2 would've had a mention. That will probably happen when Sometimes... enters the chart and/or the album reaches #1 again. So, this post is again solely based on the charts compiled by the Mega Charts (http://www.megacharts.nl), with the single sales only chart being published by Top 40 Web (http://www.top40web.nl).
After 5 weeks of sliding down a position per week (and with the album dropping in 7 of the last 8 weeks) How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb finally rises again on the charts! It seems to stabilise its position in the top 10, always the sign of a strong seller. Although it isn't near the chart success of ATYCLB yet (its first 5 weeks at #1 and its first 21 weeks in the top ten!) it is a very healthy seller. The rise may have been in anticipation to the start of the ticket sales for U2's three concert in the Netherlands. Those concerts (150,000 tickets) sold out in less than 1 1/2 hours! Next week chart will show whether that result had any effect on the sales.
Here is the chart run for How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb (27-11-2004)
1-1-2-3-4-4-5-6-7-8
6

Whereas the album has found its way up again, Vertigo sadly didn't. This week, it has dropped out of the Mega Top 50. With a chart run of 11 weeks and a peak position of #2, the single did very well. It certainly did its job of alerting the Netherlands to the fact that U2 is back and have a new album out!
Next week might see the debut of Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own. I say 'might' on purpose because I don't know the single will sell enough to debut yet, or even to make it a high debut. A few weeks ago I noted that in the Netherlands the chart week runs from Friday to Thursday. With many singles and albums hitting the shelves before their official release dates on Monday, this is not a problem. However, sometimes an album or single is not available until the official release date. This is the case for Sometimes... I looked in every record shop in my city last Saturday but could not find it. This means that the single misses the important Saturday sales, when all those people who cannot get to a record shop during the week buy their records. So we have to see what the single will do next week...

As a round-up, here is the complete chart run for Vertigo (13-11-2004)
2-3-3-10-13-18-21-23-23-24
39-out of the top 50

The current #1 album is again Greatest Hits by Robbie Williams. The current #1 single still is Als Je Iets Kan Doen by Artiesten Voor Azië, a charity single for the victims of the tsunami.

C ya!

Marty

Hello,

I have to make a small correction here. It seems that last week the Vertigo single did chart again in the top 40 of the sales-only chart. It had left that portion the week before, but it apparently rose again! Nothing dramatic though, as it rose to #40, but hey! it is a rise. :)

So here's then the corrected sales-only chart for Vertigo (13-11-2004):
2-3-5-12-14-20-23-25-23-31
39-out-40

C ya!

What's the reason you're looking to the single sales only chart?

And not the regular TOP40 or MEGATOP50?

VERTIGO
TOP40: week 11: 29
week 12: 31

SYCMIOYO
TOP40: week 12: 36

HTDAAB
TOP100"week 11: 6
week 12: 1 !!!!

And by the way, do you know the difference between top40 and top50?

Because it shows the popularity based on sales and not on the preference of radio DJ's. Thus, I think it is a more accurate description of the popularity of a certain single.
I do include the Mega Top 50 in my weekly round-ups, if there is a U2 single charting.

And by the way, do you know the difference between top40 and top50?

No, not really nowadays. It used to be that the Mega Top 50 (or 100) was solely based on sales figures. Then only the top half was sales-only with the bottom 50 being also partly based on airplay. Now the whole list is a mix of sales and airplay on 3FM and MTV.
The Top 40 has always been a mix of sales and airplay, but I don't know how much or based on which stations.

Thanks for the clear information!

Conclusion is that megacharts is very vague about how they make the lists...Also strange why they don't give sales-information. I'd like to know how much HTDAAB sells...

A bit later, sorry!!

Week 11 in my country:

Spain

Chart: 1-5-5-5-5-6-6-9-9-9-10

Sales: 100,000+

Vertigo Run: 1-1-1-4-1-2-3-3-4-1-2-4-3
