Billboards #1 album in the United States this year was DAUGHTRY by Daughtry. The Billboard year runs from late November 2006 to late November 2007. During that time Daughtry's debut sold 3.4 million copies in the United States. The #2 album was by Akon called KONVICTED. KONVICTED sold 2.7 million copies in the United States.

HTDAAB sold 2.8 million copies in its first year of release and placed at #8 back in 2005 in Billboards year end list. Yet, if it had been released and sold the same amount starting at the end of 2006 it would have been the #2 album of the year in the United States with #1 not to far away.

It will be interesting to see how U2's next album does when it is released next year, but right now with the way the industry is going, it will only have to sell about 1.7 million copies in the first year to crack the year end top 10 list! 1.9 million copies was enough to crack the top 10 this year, and it will obviously be even less for next year.

The question is, what impact will the continued decline in the record industry have on U2's sales? Is an exact repeat of HTDAAB performance possible leading to a #1 or #2 sales position at the end of the year for U2 in the USA? Or will U2 see a 40% decline in its sales on the next album, primarily do to market conditions?
