Sounds v.impressive... so now :

Approx 80k sold in UK
200k sold in USA ? (56k sold in 1st week)
Certified Diamond for 100k in France
Certified 3xPlat for 75k in Spain
Certified 2xPlat for 30k in Australia
Certified Gold for 3k in Switzerland

Total = approx 488,000 sold/certified so far in these 6 countries.
Vertigo is also 3xPlatinum in Portugal. I don't know the level of this Platinum award...

Thx MJ :wink: actually that reminds me : it's 3xPlat in New Zealand as well - also not too sure what the Plat level is though...

The Best Of 1980-1990 sold 2329 copies in the 4 last weeks in France. It is really great, this album is likely to become Diamond in France in a few years.

Interesting. This means an average of 582 copies per week which i guess would be just inside the top 200 if it included artist compilations (of course). At this rate it'll sell another 15-20k this year.

The Bomb has now double platinum (250k) in Brasil!

Great news ! & this now means total official shipments/certifications that i, for sure, know about go up to 9,285,000 :

7.5m outside UK as at Jan ' 05
+ 1.3m UK
+ extra 100k Plat cert in Spain (March ' 05)
+ extra 100k Plat cert in Canada (Sep ' 05)
+ extra 70k Plat cert in Australia (March ' 06)
+ extra 20k cert Argentina (April ' 06) +
+ extra 40k Plat cert in Denmark (about August ' 05)
+ extra 30k two 1xPlat cert's in Ireland (late ' 05/early ' 06)...could be more though.
+ extra 125k Plat cert in Brasil (May ' 06)
Total = 9,285,000

It is charted in the top 250 comprehensive chart!

Week 16 - 22/04/2006 : #247 (489 copies sold)
Week 17 - 29/04/2006 : #200 (740 copies sold)
Week 18 - 06/05/2006 : #225 (541 copies sold)
Week 19 - 13/05/2006 : #239 (559 copies sold)

About The Bomb, I estimate his sales at over 9.5 millions by now.

Thx for Brazil info MJ (& furthur French top 250 positions of BO 80-90). I don't think Vertigo DVD can now be as low as 700k though 'cos we've now got around 713k from just 8 countries :

Most probably about 300k sold in USA (56k sold in 1st week)
Approx 80k sold in UK
Certified Diamond for 100k in France
80k(+) in Brazil
Certified 3xPlat for 75k in Spain
Certified 4xPlat for 60k in Australia
Certified 3xPlat for 15k in New Zealand
Certified Gold for 3k in Switzerland

Total = approx 713,000 sold/certified so far in these 8 countries.

So must now be at 800k-1m(+) sold/certified worldwide. According to Paul M. they sold 2m DVD's in 2005.

I just found the following, quite incredible (imo), info :

"U2 and Michael Jackson have had more number one songs here (New Zealand) than anyone else, each racking up eight.
Jackson has had a total 28 weeks on top of the charts while U2 have been number one for 23 weeks."

In France Achtung Baby has re-entered the top 40 back catalogue chart for the last 5 wks with a run of : 16,16,16,21,35
:up:

Just thought i should post these fantastic up to date info/figures (up to last week, i believe) from Grindstone in this thread :

"yep, Bomb did 2116 last week, staying pretty consistant at just above 2,000 per week.

as for the catalog, soundscan doesn't really help pre-early 90's because it wasn't in as many stores back then. So anything say before Achtung Baby is likely not even close to the real numbers (and back then very few indie stores had soundscan too).

but just for the records here are the totals:

BOY - 383,540
OCTOBER - 358,248
WAR - 1,412,903
UNFORGETTABLE FIRE - 864,168
JOSHUA TREE - 3,077,815
RATTLE & HUM - 1,196,162
ACHTUNG BABY - 5,439,162
ZOOROPA - 2,331,773
POP - 1,497,032
ALL THAT YOU CANT LEAVE - 4,283,170

Vertigo Chicago DVD - 265,654
Slane Castle DVD - 243,163
Elevation Live DVD - 243,236 (amazing only 73 more copies than Slane!)

worth noting, the Complete U2 Digital Box set has scanned 32, 408. Pretty impressive there too.

it's too much of a pain to look up every single on per week's scans (and not really worth it) but to give a sense, ATYCLB scanned about 750, Achtung Baby 600 last week; Joshua Tree 1500 (wow); and Boy 250 in a week."

In addition to the above is the new US SoundScan sales total for 'The Bomb' of : 3,151,143

Assuming this is for right up to last week then this means it's been selling an average of 2,934 copies per week in US during the last 15 wks.

I saw in this forum that first week sales of R & H in the US was 1 million but it entered on #14. How could that be?

That # 14 position wouldn't have reflected it's 1st full week of sales. This was just how the chart worked back then. Same for every other superstar act (incl. all Beatles albums in the 60's).

I know of a chart book which says R&H sold 1m 1st week in US (also, 360k 1st week in UK - biggest ever to this point).

I never knew Angel of Harlem, Even better than the real thing and Who's gonna ride your wild horses were so popular in US.

Some info I just found out.

HTDAAB in Belgium: 84.000 copies sold.
it was a question in a competition to win a trip to see U2 in Hawaï.

In a forum on UKmix.org under the threat "Worldwide Best selling albums ever" UK sales for The Joshua tree are 2.666.000. Can anybody confirm it?

Hi

i'm the one "in charge" of that thread on the UKMix forum and yes, i can confirm it.

Last week were revelead the 110 best-selling albums ever in the UK, and that's from where the "The Joshua Tree" figure came out.

But that Top-110 only accounted for RETAIL sales, so doesn't NOT includ Record Club sales (sales by mail) or shipments (additional copies still in the shops). So the 2,666,000 figure is likely to be higher. Anyway we can trust that "The Joshua Tree" sold at least 2.7 million in the UK, not bad...

I reproduce here the data presently displayed on that thread for "The Joshua Tree":

Posted Sales = 16,227,000

America = 11,250,000
Certified Sales
USA= 10,000,000 (1995, RIAA) Canada= 1,000,000 (1987) Brazil= 250,000*

Europe = 4,266,000
Certified Sales
UK= 2,666,000 (2006, OCC) Germany= 1,000,000 (1994) France= 600,000 (1992)

Other Countries = 711,000
Other Sales
Australia= 350,000* New Zealand= 210,000* Japan= 151,000

I must say that a minimum additional sales of 2 million should be added to the US figure, and there are still missing sales from Mexico, Italy, Spain, and South America for instance.
So "The Joshua Tree" worldwide sales must be at a minimum of around 19 million but very likey higher, i'm still working on it...
Figures on the thread are constantly being updated and soon a Top-100 worldwide with estimated sales will be initiated.

This album sold 7 million copies in its first 3 months of release. By December 1987, it was reported the album was at 14 million copies worldwide. At that time, the USA accounted for about 4 million of that figure, while the United Kingdom accounted for 1.2 million of that figure. Since December of 1987, another 8 million copies have been sold in JUST the UK and USA bringing the total to a minimum of 22 million. This does not count sales outside the USA/UK after December 1987.

Hi Sting2

presently i don't agree with those numbers you talked about. In my researches (in the last 9 years) i have a figure of 12 MILLION worldwide at the time of release of "Rattle and Hum", what means roughly 7 million outside USA.
Other figure appeared in the press when "Achtung Baby" was released in 1991, it was 14 MILLION worldwide.
The sales figures on the UKMix thread are all of almost 8 years after the initial release so they give accurate sales after all that time.
In my opinion "The Joshua Tree" sold more than 20 MILLION, how much more i still don't have an definite estimation, i will analyse that in some weeks time in the UKMix forum.
Take a look at the thread there if you are interested in this kind of stuff (sales).
