U2 Chart/Sales Statistics

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
The Dutch albums market is (or at least was in 2006) about 8.5 times smaller than the UK's so 60k is the equivalent of shipping about 500k in the UK 1st week. They're probably expecting 1st week sales of about 30k on that, so equivalent to about 250k in UK.

Last weeks Music Week had a 3 page article on U2 saying they'd sold nearly 150m albums & Paul Mcguinnes was interviewed saying over 9m units sold for HTDAAB.

Also this weeks issue (7/3/09) has the latest UK sales figure for the Bomb : 1,238,272

This will be to end of Sat 28th Feb so means it's been selling around 13k per year for the last 3 years

New US-Soundscan figures for U2:

U2 Best of 80-90 3,062,571
U2 18 Singles 964,043

Wow so 80's Best Of has really dropped off - only 70k per year for last 2 years compared to 250k per year in previous 2 years. 18 Singles has no doubt canabolized it! Nice to see them both on that chart though.

Last weeks Music Week had a 3 page article on U2 saying they'd sold nearly 150m albums & Paul Mcguinnes was interviewed saying over 9m units sold for HTDAAB.

Letterman quoted sales of 145m - so we are now closer to an accurate figure, somewhere between 145-150m Mike

18 Singles so far this year in UK,

#172.~2.5k
x.~.9k
#81.~2.5k
#78.~2.5k
#86.~2.2k
#94.~1.7k
#54.~5k (52 wks on chart)
#48.~4.5k
#39.~5k

~27k sold in 9 wks so total must at least be pretty close to 800k now

i think boy 3,5 mln,october 3,5,war 8,uabrs 8,tuf 8,waia 3,tjt 28,rah 14,ab 18,zooropa 8,pop 8,80-90 16,atyclb 12,90-00 6,htdaab 10,18 singles 5. so 160 mln around.

Update of known UK 1st week sales (from Music Week/CIN/OCC) :

1. Rattle & Hum - 360,000
2. Joshua Tree - 235,000
3. HTDAAB - 200,863
4. Achtung Baby - 200,000
5. ATYCLB - 164,147
6. NLOTH - 158,926
7. Pop - 152,000
8. Best Of 80-90 - 144,000
9. Zooropa - don't have exact figure but most probably about 140,000 (Vox magazine at the time said 200k but MW actually said 150,000 in 1st 8 days)
10. U218 Singles - 101,083
11. Best Of 90-00 - 95,000

So the 158,926 NLOTH sold put it in 6th place between ATYCLB & Pop. & the ~20% drop from Bomb could actually be explained by the overall ~20% drop in UK album sales since 2004 - so even without taking into account the different time of release (the market being much stronger in late November than early March).

'18 Singles' is now above 800,000 UK sales. So far this year it's done,

#172.~2.5k
x.~.9k
#81.~2.5k
#78.~2.5k
#86.~2.2k
#94.~1.7k
#54.~5k (52 wks on chart)
#48.~4.5k
#39.~5k
#17.9514 (total : 796,288)
#27.~7.5k

It only sold ~20k in the whole of last year but wasn't of course widely available at a decent price, hot on the heels of a new album & tour, as it is now.

It's done ~44k in the last 11 wks giving a to-date total of ~804,000

Hey, I'm hoping someone can help me here! I'm writing my final paper for business college here in Finland and I need some info about U2s album sales. I'm writng about royalties and copywrite of performing artists and using U2 as my example and I need to know what approximately is U2 world wide record sales to date? Or can any one direct me to a website that has this info?

UK update for The Joshua Tree to the week of 14th June 2009 : 28th all-time best selling album with total sales of 2,752,787.

So since the Nov 2006 all-time list (when it was 26th with 2,665,553) it's sold another 87,234 copies - of which ~15k have come from the original edition & ~72k from the Nov 2007 re-issue. It probably sold ~50k from the Nov 2006 all-time list to the end of 2007, ~20k in 2008 & ~20k so far this year.

39 - Walk On {2001} : 60k

All singles credited to U2 except:-
LMC = LMC vs. U2
ACLM = Adam Clayton & Larry Mullen
MJB = Mary J Blige & U2
Pass = Passengers
CwB = Clannad with Bono
BBK = U2 & BB King
TT = Tina Turner (track written by Bono & The Edge)
GD = U2 & Green Day

My own guess at the next 10 is as follows:-

41 - Get On Your Boots {2009} : 50k
42 - Fire {1981} : 45k
43 - New Year's Dub [MvU2] {2001} : 35k
44 - New Day [WJfB] {1999} : 30k
45 - Windows In The Skies {2007} : 30k
46 - In God's Country {1987} : 20k
47 - A Celebration {1982} : 20k
48 - Gloria {1981} : 15k
49 - Magnificent {2009} : 10k
50 - In The Name Of The Father [BGF] {1994} : 10k

MvU2 = Musique vs. U2
WJfB = Wyclef Jean
BGF = Bono & Gavin Friday

Singles probably selling less than 10k:-
11 O'Clock Tick Tock; A Day Without Me; I Will Follow {all 1980}; I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight {2009}; and Heroine {1986} from the soundtrack to Captive by The Edge and Sinead O'Connor.

Using the estimates I have posted above, and totalling all singles which credit U2 (including LMC vs U2 and Musique vs U2), gives career U2 singles sales of about 5,900k.

This can be sense-checked as follows:-
4,665k - sales 1980-2003 (47th on UK's all-time Top 50 singles acts)
330k - sales 2004 (MW year end #24)
190k - sales 2005 (MW year end #34)
240k - the two 2006 collaborations (Mary J Blige & Green Day)
30k - Windows In The Skies (2007)
40k - the 3 singles from No Line On The Horizon (2009)
120k - digital sales of With Or Without You 2005-2009 (MW June 2009)
285k - digital sales of other back catalogue singles 2005-2009 (= balancing figure)
5,900k

Here it says that the totals for JT excludes the figures of the 2007 issue.

There are now 3 different figures for joshua tree. The 3rd one is the 2.753.000 figure at the BPI site. Wich one is the most plausible one?

And I mis Achtung baby (certified for 1.2m) and HTDAAB with sales of 1.238.000 according to the March 7 2009 edition of MW.

But overall great lists!!!

The Virgin book total for JT in that list is 2.680m. I just added in the approx 50k of the '07 re-issue which it was clearly missing.

Achtung Baby is probably somewhere around the 1.35m mark now in UK.

So correct recent combined sales breakdown for JT :

BPI/OCC Nov '06 all-time = 2,665,553 (26th)
+~15k of original +~72k of '07 re-issue
= BPI/OCC all-time update to wk of 14th June '09 : 2,752,787 (28th)
+~10k from further chart run
= MW/BPI/OCC all-time update to Sat 22nd Aug '09 : ~2,762,000 (still 28th)
+~8k from further chart run
= total now : ~2,770,000 (& still 28th)

Anyone know the estimated all-time sales figures of NLOTH and what it is compared to other albums which were at this point?

Anyone know the estimated all-time sales figures of NLOTH and what it is compared to other albums which were at this point?

This is how the album is doing currently. With the exception of Lady Gaga, it is the biggest selling album of the year!

Don't compare it to sales of albums from the past. In 2009, the majority of people obtain their music for free so any comparison of sales of 2009 albums to 2005 or 2000 released albums would not be accurate at all. No album can sell like they did in 2005 or 2000 thanks to the internet, CD burning and other ways of obtaining music for free.
