Stadium Show Sell Out, Down Under

Record breaking demand for tickets to the March shows in New Zealand and Australia as additional dates in Auckland, Sydney and Melbourne sell out out in minutes. Tickets for all eight stadium shows have now sold out in a matter of hours.

Maybe it was the excitement from the outdoor shows in Europe this past summer, maybe the long-awaited return to New Zealand and Australia, whatever the reasons there has been unbelievable ticket demand for the March shows which were the first to be announced for the 2006 leg of the Vertigo Tour.

Three more shows went on sale yesterday in Auckland, Sydney and Melbourne, breaking box-office records again and selling out in hours. The second Auckland show, even with a limit of four tickets per person, sold out in under two hours.

Earlier this month a quarter of a million tickets were sold for the first five shows in Auckland, Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Brisbane – including 160,000 during the first 90 minutes. The concerts were the quickest sell outs in the history of each venue with sales in Adelaide breaking the largest ever concert attendance in that city.

Looks like it’s going to be quite an event when the band arrive down under in March: 2001’s Elevation Tour didn’t make it to either country, while PopMart only got to Australia in 1998. The Auckland shows will be the band’s first visit to New Zealand since December 1993.

BOXSCORE results are now in for the last two shows in Boston, shows in St. Louis, Cleveland, Buffalo, Salt Lake City, Charlotte, Portland, and Hartford!

Sting, there were 110 on those three legs. And by the look of it, you've reported them all. So the number of 109 shows is incorrect.

I don't know if the attendance number and/or gross is incorrect too.

The totals are of 109 shows because figures are not in yet for the Omaha Nebraska show on December 15. It did not make the Billboard BOXSCORE top 10 this week, so we'll have to wait for BeLIEve to tell us how well it did on the larger Boxscore chart that he can see through BeLIEve's billboard membership.

on the BBC website, according to Pollstar, the Stones's North American Tour has Grossed more than Vertigo's.

Stones 'smash own concert record'
The Rolling Stones
The Stones played 42 concerts in North America in 2005
The Rolling Stones' 2005 tour of North America is the most successful US concert tour of all time, according to US trade publication Pollstar.

The veteran rockers broke their own 11-year-old record by selling $162m (£94m) worth of tickets, playing 42 performances before 1.2m people.

U2 were second with 78 US and Canada shows in, making $138.9m (£80.1m).

Celine Dion came third on the list, having made $81.3m (£47.1m) from 155 dates at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

Sir Paul McCartney and the Eagles complete the top five, with ticket sales of $77.3m (£44.8m) and $76.8m (£44.5m) respectively.

Biggest draws

According to Pollstar, ticket sales for the Top 100 shows rose to $3.1 billion (£1.8bn), breaking last year's record of $2.8bn. (£1.6bn)

This was due in part to a rise in the average ticket price from $52 (£30) to $57 (£33). Actual ticket sales were 36.1m, down 1.5m on 2004.

The previous record for a US tour was $121m (£70.1m), set by the Rolling Stones in 1994.

With the Stones and U2 touring elsewhere in 2006, Pollstar predicts the Who, Prince and Queen with Paul Rodgers will be next year's biggest draws in the US and Canada.

I am surprised that 5 artist had bigger average ticket price than U2 in US. Here's the list according to Pollstar:

1. The Rolling Stones $162.0 / $133.98
2. U2 $138.9 / $96.3.92
3. Celine Dion $81 / $136.04
4. Paul McCartney $77.3 / $135.46
5. Eagles $76.8 / $104.17
6. Elton John $65.8 / $102.46
7. Kenny Chesney $61.8 / $54.63
8. Dave Matthews Band $57.0 / $47.09
9. Neil Diamond $47.3 / $63.02
10. Jimmy Buffett $41.0 / $76.49
11. Mötley Crüe $39.9 / $46.48
12. Green Day $34.8 / $38.07
13. Toby Keith $31.6 / $46.11
14. Rascal Flatts $28.2 / $34.92
15. Bruce Springsteen $26.3 / $81.00
16. Gwen Stefani $24.2 / $54.46
17. Coldplay $24.1 / $40.80
18. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers $23.6 / $38.05
19. Barry Manilow $22.7 / $153.93
20. "Anger Management Tour" $21.6 / $64.03
First number is for Gross, second is average price

on the BBC website, according to Pollstar, the Stones's North American Tour has Grossed more than Vertigo's.

The Stones record was broken several years ago if you count tours that have several of their shows in the following year. Paul McCartney in 2002-2003, Rolling Stones in 2002-2003 and Bruce Springsteen in 2002-2003 all had GROSS totals that were above the 121 million mark for North America. The Stones and McCartney came in at around 125 to 126 million each. Bruce Springsteen had 116 million in 2003, but also around 40 to 50 million in 2002, for a combined total of perhaps $166 million, although I don't have the exact figure.

Pollstar uses a January to December chart for rankings and records, so if half of your tour falls in one year and then the next, your not going to score very high.

In any event, the Rolling Stones have at least 14 more shows to play in North America in 2006, so their final total is going to be larger than $162 million dollars for North America.

Also, lets not forget that both the Rolling Stones and U2 will be playing Mexico who's figures will be added to the North American totals. Same goes for the Rolling Stones show in Puerto Rico.

The final Rolling Stone GROSS for North America will likely be about $230 million dollars with the additional 17 shows in 2006 in the USA, Canada, Mexico and Puerto Rico.

The final total for U2 will probably be $155 million dollars once the Mexican stadium shows are added in, for North America.

U2 will be the first artist to crack the $400 million dollar mark in Mid-April. If nothing changes and the Rolling Stones finish out what is currently planned for 2006, their final GROSS will likely be at least $430 million dollars, . But its likely more shows could be added in Australia and other countries.

The Stones are behind on attendance and will probably not match U2's total attendance figure unless they add more shows. Many of the Rolling Stones shows were slow sellers and several shows in Europe still have thousands of tickets available. In contrast, nearly every U2 show soldout in record time, within minutes or hours, both in Europe and in North America.

I am surprised that 5 artist had bigger average ticket price than U2 in US. Here's the list according to Pollstar:

1. The Rolling Stones $162.0 / $133.98
2. U2 $138.9 / $96.3.92
3. Celine Dion $81 / $136.04
4. Paul McCartney $77.3 / $135.46
5. Eagles $76.8 / $104.17
6. Elton John $65.8 / $102.46
7. Kenny Chesney $61.8 / $54.63
8. Dave Matthews Band $57.0 / $47.09
9. Neil Diamond $47.3 / $63.02
10. Jimmy Buffett $41.0 / $76.49
11. Mötley Crüe $39.9 / $46.48
12. Green Day $34.8 / $38.07
13. Toby Keith $31.6 / $46.11
14. Rascal Flatts $28.2 / $34.92
15. Bruce Springsteen $26.3 / $81.00
16. Gwen Stefani $24.2 / $54.46
17. Coldplay $24.1 / $40.80
18. Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers $23.6 / $38.05
19. Barry Manilow $22.7 / $153.93
20. "Anger Management Tour" $21.6 / $64.03
First number is for Gross, second is average price

U2's average ticket price for North America was $96.96 , not $96.92. The only average ticket price I found surprising was Elton John's.

For the Eagles, remember they typically do not sell seats behind the stage, which allows them to bumb up their average price. The Rolling Stones price is obvious with $400 dollar tickets. Celine Dion's is not a surprise with her doing theater shows in Vegas. Paul McCartney has always charged a hefty sum.

Let remember that U2 takes the 2,000 most highly valued tickets, floor tickets, and sells them at 49.50, well below market value which is likely over 200 dollars. No one else does this, and it does reduce the total GROSS and average ticket price U2 would have if they were charging the market value for those tickets.

U2 sold the most tickets in North America, with nearly every show selling out in minutes or hours. Even the slowest seller, St. Louis, was soldout over 6 months in advance of the show. Bottom line, the Vertigo Tour did not fully satisfy demand in North America, and the final GROSS and Attendance figures for the tour understate what the true level of demand really was.

But for calendar year 2005, isn´t Vertigo the top tour in the US??

As for comparing demand to see U2 and the Stones, the Buenos Aires results attest to what you mention below. It took just a week for U2 to sold out both shows in contrast with the two weeks it took the RS to sold out theirs.
There´s nothing official as of now but chances are that U2 adds a third show in Bs. As. Negotiations will take place once the boys come back from vacation, i.e. January 9th.

Vertigo is the top tour in the USA in terms of attendance for 2005, but in terms of GROSS, "A Bigger Bang" is the top tour GROSSING $162 million dollars. The Rolling Stones were able to get 1.2 million people to buy tickets at an average price of $135 dollars.

WORLDWIDE for 2005, VERTIGO tour is the top tour in terms of both ATTENDANCE and GROSS with 3.4 million attendance and $295 million dollar GROSS.

Thanks for the data Sting2.
So, the only way we could know for sure who´s the most popular artist in the US (it´s pretty clear U2 is the winner worldwide) is if U2 charged the very same amount for their tickets than the RS.
If you ask me, every single U2 show in the US would have still sold out in that scenario.

Well in terms of popularity, U2 are miles ahead of the Rolling Stones because I consider current Album Sales and Concert Ticket sales when determining popularity.

But if your just talking about ones concert drawing ability, I think the Stones are still probably ahead of U2 in the United States although by a much smaller margin than the final GROSS figures suggest. Worldwide its difficult to say. The Rolling Stones have been the #1 concert drawing artist since 1975, and U2 have been the #2 concert drawing artist since 1987 worldwide. U2 will be the first artist with the Vertigo tour to GROSS over $400 million, but the Stones will pass U2's new record sometime in the Summer of 2006.

The fact that U2 has not fully satisfied demand in any part of the world and will be ending the tour early from a commercial standpoint, combined with the fact that the attendance and GROSS for both artist in various regions is very close, makes it difficult to determine who is really on top in terms of concert drawing ability.

When it comes to album sales, the Rolling Stones "A Bigger Bang" has sold less than 1.5 million copies worldwide. Its still has yet to sell 500,000 copies in the United States. Contrast that with HTDAAB which has sold 3 million copies in the United States and over 9 million copies worldwide.

The Rolling Stones may be slightly ahead of U2 in terms of concert drawing strength in the United States, but U2 is 6 times ahead of the Rolling Stones as an album selling act.

Worldwide, we'll really have to wait until both tours are finished to determine that as far as concert drawing strength. In terms of popularity, U2 have been way ahead of the Rolling Stones since 1987. U2 as an album selling artist is even further ahead of the Stones outside the United States. They also measure up with the Stones even better and in fact defeat them in many markets outside the United States.

Double Sell Out For Argentina

Tour dates for Vertigo '06 continue to break records. The first Argentina show for Buenos Aires on March 1st sold out in record time. A second was added and that too sold out.

We're expecting more information on further show dates in the not too distant future. We'll bring it to you first, keep checking back.

Yeah, I expect 1-2 dates in Tokyo/Yokohama and 2 in Honolulu. And, maybe, a 3rd in Buenos Aires.

Mexico only 124000? I expect at least 200000 tickets sold for two Azteca stadium shows. Azteca is second biggest stadium in the world with 115000 seats.

According to press, each show sold 62,000 tickets. The stage will be in the same position used before in Milan, Poland and Glasgow.

Incidentally, if anyone can give me an actual figure for Adelaide that would be good. I heard the capacity was set at 35-40,000 but given the size of AAMI stadium and the set up (stage right up at one end of the stadium) this is hard to believe.

U2's two night GROSS at Sao Paulo Brazil of $11,682,557 is likely the GROSS record for a foreign artist tour of Brazil. The two night total is more than all of the Rolling Stones concert appearences in Brazil combined!

The Santiago Chile show is likely the highest grossing and highest attended concert in the history of Chile by a foreign artist. GROSS: $5,000,589 ATTENDANCE: 77,345

STING2 this is great stuff. Where do you find these figures (I haven't read the whole thread...my bad)?

Amusement Business lets Billboard.com publish the figures on its website and in its weekly magazine. Billboard magazine list the top 50 concerts of the week in its magazine and the top 10 on the website, every week. The only way to search past numbers though is to find a library or something else that keeps back issues of billboard magazine because the website does not keep an archive of all the published results.

For the current chart that listed the most recent U2 concert grosses for South America, go here:

http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/charts/boxscore.jsp

As U2 plays its final shows Down Under and in Japan and Hawaii just go to www.billboard.com then "charts", and then "concerts" to see the weekly top 10 boxscore results. If there is a news stand store nearby where you live, they may have Billboard magazine which will list not just the top 10 concerts of the week, but the top 40 or top 50.

Just curious what the worldwide GROSS would be if U2 sold it's floor tickets at market value. Even if it is an unfair comparison. Just counting US/Canada numbers rough math lead me to about $15m.
