Stones Roll By U2 For Top Grossing Tour Ever

Billboard, November 24, 2006

Ray Waddell

Though they'll surely live to fight another day, U2's brief stint holding the title of top-grossing tour ever is over. That distinction now returns to the Rolling Stones, whose A Bigger Bang tour is now the top-grossing tour in history.

From March 28, 2005, to March 2, 2006, U2's Vertigo tour rang up grosses of more than $333 million. That put U2 ahead of the Stones' $320 million Voodoo Lounge tour of 1994-95, and the band's 10 stadium makeup shows this month will take the total to 121 shows and a gross of about $377 million.

But the Stones' numbers from their global A Bigger Bang tour shatter that mark. Since the fall of 2005, the band has grossed a staggering $437 million and drawn 3.5 million people to 110 shows. In addition, an estimated crowd of 2 million saw the band perform at Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro back in February. The tour, like every Stones trek since 1989, is produced by Michael Cohl under the Concert Productions International banner, with Live Nation.

Though no one's commenting officially, talk is that the Stones will stretch the tour into 2007, meaning a final mark of more than $500 million is easily in range.

Mr. Waddell has his figures wrong. For the two tours to date based on figures released to date, this is how things stack up:

VERTIGO TOUR
GROSS: $372,247,430
ATTENDANCE: 4,427,587
SHOWS: 125

A BIGGER BANG TOUR
GROSS: $387,137,364
ATTENDANCE: 3,170,432
SHOWS: 98

There are still 6 U2 shows yet to be reported and 17 Rolling Stones shows. The Stones will obviously GROSS more, but more people attended the Vertigo Tour.

The real differences between this tours and what puts the VERTIGO TOUR on top, is that ever Vertigo show to date has soldout, while only a little more than half of the Rolling Stones shows soldout. U2 could easily add more shows all across the world because there is so much unmet demand, where as the Stones have been playing to half empty stadiums on the last leg of their tour in North America. Nearly all of the Stones shows in Europe did NOT sellout and some were cancelled do to poor ticket sales. In contrast, every U2 VERTIGO show in Europe soldout in minutes or hours, and than band could have gone back to Europe this summer for another 32 shows adding another $150 million gross total to their sum, which alone would have put them ahead of anything the Stones will finally finish with.

Sure, the Stones could extend their tour into 2007 and attempt to play some markets that perhaps they have not hit yet or have not played since the tour started in 2005, but with so many shows not soldout, its obvious that their tour has ran its course and their only reason for continued touring is to move the stats a little more.

It would make far more sense for the Vertigo Tour to continue given that nearly every show soldout within minutes or hours of going on sale and so many people in Europe and North America were left without tickets.

So when the final figures come in, in the next few weeks, just remember the above facts.

Sting 2,

Great threat for the Vertigo tour box offices!! But have you got the same figures for the Elevation tour and/or Popmart tour if possible?

Sure do, but the I don't have the precise figures for Elevation but GROSS is rounded within 1 million and and attendence is within 100,000. The GROSS figure is more or less an exact figure printed in Billboard Magazine. The Attendance figure is an estimate because there were a few shows that did not get posted in the boxscore columns so their figures had to be estimated. But the GROSS figure is a precise figure all though it is rounded. The POPMART figures are precise figures from Amusement Business.

POPMART TOUR
GROSS: $171,677,024
ATTENDANCE: 3,935,936
SHOWS: 93

ELEVATION TOUR
GROSS: $143 million
ATTENDANCE: 2.3 million
SHOWS: 113

I went to all 3 shows, and there was definately a large proportion of the top tier seats that were not used on the third night where they were on the first two.

Yeah, I'd just like to chime in on this. I'm surprised the third show is listed as a sell-out but I suppose they did sell every ticket put on sale after all. I took careful note of the crowd both nights I saw U2: the second and third shows. At the second show, the entire uppermost level was packed to the back. At the third show, the crowd on the uppermost level stopped about halfway up. There were empty sections on both sides, though not significantly noticeable. Probably 5,000-10,000 less than at the previous two shows. I suppose they just deliberately did not sell the worst seats.

206,568 over 3 shows is 68,856 per Sydney performance. I don't think I heard any predictions over 70,000 per.

Of course, that's just a straight division by three, which doesn't quite hold true due to what I've just said about the third night's attendance being visibly lower. I think the first two shows must have been a tad past 70,000 per night.

I did see on the Telstra Stadium website after the first Sydney show that they posted a crowd of 74k+. They did publish an exact number though I cant recall it exactly. Not that pedantic.
I also went to all three Sydney shows, and the third was not full. I reckon about 10-15,000 seats were empty, which would make the crowd about 60,000. Bigger than most singalongs.
The second show looked to me as packed as the first, therefore also approximately 74,000.

U2's management held back tickets, the exact same seats they sold 48 and 72 hours earlier, because they care for fans sightlines?

Seems pretty obvious to me to sell the best available seats first.

The FINAL FIGURES are in for the VERTIGO TOUR! Japanese figures and Hawaii figures were just posted on the Billboard Boxscore chart and listed down below with the rest of the shows. So 4.6 Million, just behind Zoo TV.

ZOO TV had 157 shows and did about 5.4 million attendance. But a large number of ZOO TV stadium shows did not completely sellout, roughly 25% of them. By comparison, every Vertigo Tour show soldout, except for a few venues where the entire capacity may not have been used. These sellouts were achieved in minutes or hours of going on sale usually. This means, there was much more demand in the market for more shows. Despite the smaller attendance and number of shows, Vertigo I would say was the more in demand tour, especially when you look at the tour gross which is a staggering $389 million compared to just about $160 million for ZOO TV. U2 definitely underplayed worldwide as McGuinness has said. There were several restrictions on the number of shows and schedual because of the illness in Edge's family. There were also plans to tour in the summer of 2006 in North America and Europe which got cancelled do to the illness in Edges family. The Vertigo tour overall was the more in demand tour, even more so when you consider the ticket prices after you adjust for inflation.

I have a question about touring: what would Popmart's 60 USD and Zoo TV's 35 USD tickets cost today, adjusted for inflation?

STING2, do you have the boxscore numbers for Janet Jacksons's Feb 16th 2002 show at Aloha stadium? It was the final date of her 2001-2 tour, was an HBO special and a sold out show of over 40,000 people. Just wondering how it compares to u2.

Was Saitama 2 not sold out?

Here is a photo of Saitama 2 during streets:

Thats not a photo during streets. Sure, anyone can go to a concert and take photo's of empty seats, especially before the opening act has come on. I don't have the boxscore for the Janet Jackson show, but its already been confirmed by a number of media sources that the U2 show was the largest concert in the history of Hawaii. In addition there is an article in the "tour dates" section of the forum here, where they talk about the largest shows at Aloha Stadium with the manager there. Both the Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson shows were discussed. I've not been able to find where the article is though, its within one of those big Hawaii threads, but there are like 20 of them with 500 post a piece.

POPMART's average ticket price in North America was $47.74 US dollars and ZOO TV's was around $30 US dollars in North America

Worldwide, POPMART's average price was $43.61 US dollars, and ZOO TV's was probably around $30 US dollars still.

Adjusted for inflation, here are the figures:

ZOO TV Worldwide/North America: $40.63

POPMART North America: $56.26

POPMART Worldwide: $51.39

The final results and totals for the Rolling Stones "A Bigger Bang Tour" have now come in.

A BIGGER BANG TOUR
GROSS: $440,982,715.5
ATTENDANCE: 3,623,450
SHOWS: 113

VERTIGO TOUR
GROSS: $389,047,636
ATTENDANCE: 4,615,035
SHOWS: 131

Every show on the Vertigo Tour soldout, while about 3 dozen shows on the Bigger Bang tour did not sellout, mainly outside the USA. The Stones were forced cancel shows in Germany, France, and Hawaii in part because of low ticket sales. About 1 million more people paid to see the Vertigo Tour than paid to see the A Bigger Bang Tour.

Tour promoter, Arthur Fogal, had this to say about the Vertigo Tour, "I sometimes try and visualize, what would be the universe?" "In other words, what if you could just play and play and play? We sold over four-and-a-half million tickets on this tour, but we still underplayed basically everywhere we've gone."

Thanks for the information Sting2!!

One more question, Are they any gross figures for the 2 American legs for the Unforgettable fire tour?

If still anyone have these figures... that would be great.

U2 played to around 600,000 people on those two legs of that tour and with an average ticket price of $13.50, the total gross would come out to around 8 million dollars. Not every show was reported to amusement business, so its not possible to report a precise figure, but the above is roughly what it is.

I think it results in a total attendance of: 4 619 021

(Billboard annonced 4 619 021 - "U2: From joshua trees to palm trees")

Thank you for correcting the mistake! It was actually published on Billboard.com that the attendance for the Philips Arena show was a little over 36,000. I saw how that the final figures were off on attendance by 4,000 with the ones reported by Billboard later, but could not find a mistake anywhere. The mistakes was Billboards or amusement business though, when they reported the Atlanta show as having only 36,000 in attendance! This happened a lot more often back in the early days with the correctiong coming usually a week later in the Boxscore chart.

Thanks again for the correct information!

I noticed a few weeks back that an article in an interview with Arthur Fogal, the tour promoter mentioned a total tour attendance of 4,619,021. This is roughly 4,000 tickets off the number derived from the total of all the boxscores printed in Billboard magazine or the website. I rechecked my math which came out ok and was about to recheck the original source for each concert when Alexvox came on and explained why the figures were not computing correctly. Billboard posted figure for the Atlanta show is actually a mistake. They posted the following:

94, 95. Atlanta, Ga. : Nov. 18-19, 2005 : Philips Arena : GROSS $3,500,572 : ATTENDANCE 36,334 : SHOWS 2 : SELLOUTS 2

But alexvox has posted the corrected figure which is:

Nov. 18-19, 2005 U2, Institute Philips Arena Atlanta, Ga. $3 500 572 40 320 40 320 2 2 $160, $49.50

or in the format we use:

94, 95. Atlanta, Ga. : Nov. 18-19, 2005 : Philips Arena : GROSS $3,500,572 : ATTENDANCE 40,320 : SHOWS 2 : SELLOUTS 2

Back in the early 1980s, the Billboard used to make mistakes every month in the reporting of gross and attendance figures in Billboard magazine. They would always correct them though in the following weeks Boxscore report. Mistakes these days are so rare though and no one picked up on this one until now.

I noticed that in the body of the tour dates I forgot to put in the different Atlanta figures so I decided to repost this with the correction. I'm not 100% postive that this correction that "Alexvox" found is actually correct, but the fact that the tour end attendance total mentioned in a billboard article matches this new total once the corrected Atlanta figure is put in supports the idea that there was a mistake in the original posted boxscore and that this is the correct total. But, it does bring the average ticket price for the Atlanta shows down a bit which makes it unusual. One would think that the gross figure would have gone up as well. Most average ticket price differences between venues are only around a dollar or two, not 10 dollars as in this case. Overall though the difference with or without the correction is so minor when looking at the totals for the entire tour. Without the correction, attendance for the entire tour would be 4,615,035. With the correction its 4,619,021.
