I just thought it would be interesting to try & work out exactly how many copies HTDAAB has now sold in Europe. This is what I've got so far :

UK - 1070000
Italy - 450K
Germany - 400K
France - 355K
Spain - 200K
Holland - 150K
Portugal - 130K
Ireland - 110K
Belgium - 80K
Austria - 50K
Total - 2995M

So the total from these 10 countries is about 2995M. But there are still another 15 countries (25 countries in EU?) in Europe that I'm not too sure about.

I would guess an average of about 40K sold in each of these 15 countries = 15 x 40K = 600K

So my estimate for total sales of HTDAAB in Europe so far would be 2995M + 600K = 3595M

Feel free to add any other sales figures to the thread - we should
then be able to come up with a fairly accurate figure.

Remember, HTDAAB was certified 3xPlat IFPI Europe in Dec 2004 for sales of 3M.

Here's one I forgot to add to the above list : HTDAAB is Gold in Greece (thanks Fitz) but I'm not sure whether this represents sales of 10K or 25K (I think it's one or the other)....:scratch: :confused:

Sweden 60K
Finland 21.348 as at 31.12.2004
Denmark 40k
Hungary 10k

These are minimum figures for certificated platinum- or goldlevel!

Well, we got a similar thread on u2place.com, a very good italian site...we'we just developed this discussion about european charts.
We can say that:
- Slovenia has sold about 9.000 copies;
- Polonia has platinum certification for 100.000 copies;
- probably, Italy has sold some less than 450.000 copies (about 425.000...);
- Reubblica Ceca has sold about 20.000 copies;
- Greece has sold about 25.000 copies.

IFPI certification for third platinum is for december 2004, we're waiting for the fourth...
We think that a good estimate for european sales is (at least) 3.500.000 copies.

:up: :) Thanks for the figures everyone - good work!! We've now got sales figures from 20 European countries :

UK - 1070000
Italy - 425K
Germany - 400K
France - 355K
Spain - 200K
Holland - 150K
Portugal - 130K
Ireland - 110K
Poland - 100K
Belgium - 80K
Switzerland - 80K
Sweden - 60K
Norway - 55K
Austria - 50K
Denmark - 40K
Finland - 30K (I estimate it's sold 9K since 31.12.2004)
Greece - 25K
Czech Republic - 20K
Hungary - 10k
Slovenia - 9K
Total - 3399M

So, 3.4M copies of HTDAAB now sold in these 20 European countries - BUT some of these sales figures are slightly old or minimum certifications. So, I think the actual figure is closer to 3.5M from these 20 countries - maybe even 3.5M+.

Also, there are still another 24 countries in Europe - including Russia - although any sales from Vatican City may count as Italy. So, please keep on posting those sales figures/certifications....

Im surprised the sales in france are so low. thought they would have been more than in germany. Italys sales are brilliant

I'm also a bit surprised that sales of Bomb are below 400K in France. I think this is partly because overall album sales dropped by 8% in France in 2004 (from 2003).

with the way album sales in almost every country are down, in a big way. HTDAAB's sales seem better than by comparing them to other U2 albums. will there ever be another album which will sell the amount of the Joshua Tree, or more?
i cant see it happening, not many albums will reach 10 million copies, from now on. and will there ever be another band to sell the same amount of albums as U2? no chance

Yesterday I was flicking through a 3-4 week old edition of Billboard magazine at Borders & they had a list of the top 10 best selling albums in Europe for the "first quarter of 2005" (Jan - April 2005). I was a bit surprised (& obviously v.happy) to see that HTDAAB was # 1, beating Green Day & Robbie Williams. For some reason they didn’t actually say how many copies it sold during these 4 months : Anyone know?
