Italy:

add #3 for week 8 in Italy (HTDAAB) and #7 for week 10 (vertigo)

as for sales HTDAAB was the 10th best selling title this year in Italy...and i know that number #9 had shipment of 300k copies in its first week and that #3 (blue gratest hits) had 4 platinum certification (400k copies shipped) before the end of 2004 so i can assume that HTDAAB has shipped something like 250k-300k copies by the end of 2004

I found this in the news-section...8.5 worldwide...is it shipment?

Vertigo, the Grammy-nominated single heavily promoted in iPod ads, has sold nearly 300,000 downloads. Since its No. 1 debut two months ago, the How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb album has sold 2.3 million copies in the USA and 8.5 million worldwide. Even with speculation about possible treks this year by the Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen, "the first half of the year is U2's ballgame," Bongiovanni says.

Don´t believe the hype my friend  I remember reading at some news which said How To Dismantle... have sold 5 million copies worldwide in just 10 days... of course it was a fake. We´ll find a lot of stories like those ones. I´ve found sales from 3 million copies worlwide until 8.5 million copies:scratch:

Peace

repetita iuvant...

album sales ARE ALWAYS shipped copies (and artists do get paid on shipped copies, while stores get paid on copies sold to consumer)...so for example when you read that MJ's Thirller has sold 40 million copies the number stands for shipped copies ok? ;) Obviously as time passes by we can assume that the amount of copies sold to consumer is almost equal to the shipped copies as no one order copies that he doesn't think he can sell.
For example the 5.6 million figure you are referring to is the initial shipment (so it wasn't a fake)..now we can assume (based on media traffic) that the album has sold about 6 millions copies to consumer (but probably a little more as mediatraffic doesn't cover all the markets, so let's say anything between 6 and 6.5 million) and as a consequence all the initial shipment has been sold to consumer...the 8.5 figure refers to the actual shipment of HTDAAB and as for statsitics sold copies have always been shipped copies then we can say that HTDAAB has sold 8.5 million copies so far. ok? :)

The article is confusing. The authors refer to REAL consumer sales of HTDAAB in the U.S., but then refer to SHIPPED worldwide sales of HTDAAB.

8.5 M copies has been shipped worldwide. This has been confirmed by other sources. Of that, 3M have been shipped to the U.S. (hence HTDAAB is already an impressive 3x Platinum - even if it never passes that mark, it's already outstanding).

But as Dima stated, 6M have been sold to actual consumer worldwide, with 2.2M of those being in the U.S. So stores around the world have 2.5M copies of HTDAAB on the shelves - more than enough to last a while. I'm not predicting seeing 4x Platinum in the U.S. or 10M worldwide for a while. The earliest will be towards the latter part of this year UNLESS something phenomenal happens (i.e., one of U2's singles really takes off; a new commercial is released; the tour, TV appearances and other promotion is extraordinary, etc.).

phommel was asking if those stats were for shipped copies or sold ones, not if the number is "hype".

If you have stats or chart info that say otherwise, post them, because that's what we discuss in here.

In Germany we have sales of at least 300k according to the last media control charts (platinum + gold status). For a platinum certification you need 200k, gold 100k!

Canada :

Thee Canadian Recording Industry Association has handed out a quadruple (4*) platinum certification to the BOMB, which means more than 400 000 units

Once again, proof that Canadians are bigger U2 fans than the US.
