Since Edge and Bono have basically stamped their name on this musical, why not track it. All reviews I have read about this play initially indicated a huge dud! Even recent reviews of the version 2.0 haven't been all that great. People have mocked this play from SNL to the Tony award broadcast itself. So just how "bad" is this musical doing??

As many of you may or may not know, the new broadway sensation is The Book of Mormon. The reviews are stellar and it kicked ass at the Tony awards last month.

Last week, the book of Mormon grossed $1,215,619 and sold 102% of the capacity
Last week, Spiderman TOTD grossed $1,702,866 and sold 100.1% of capacity

The top three musicals last week:

Wicked $1,830,739
The Lion King $1,748,215
Spiderman $ 1,702,866

The top five musicals YTD

Wicked $42 million
The Lion King $40 million
Spiderman $31 million
Jersey Boys $26 million
Billy Elliot $23 million

Top five musicals of ALL TIME

Phantom of the Opera $816 million
Lion King $785 million
Wicked $560 million ( U2 360 out grossed wicked by over $100 mill so far lol )
Mama Mia $463 million
Beauty and the Beast $429 million
Spiderman TOTD $35 million (84th all time)

It's obvious that success is all about longevity in this business. Spiderman should end the year with roughly $65 million grossed assuming it stays in the top 3. That would mean it would take a about 12 years of this success to catch Phantom of the Opera. Although by then The Lion King and Wicked will surly have blow past that mark.

So for now, let's focus on the face that Spiderman TOTD has been consistently in the Top 3 musicals, gross wise, for sometime now. They may even hit # 1 if they get their act together. bottom line, this play isn't the financial disaster that we have been told it was.

here is my source if anyone wants to dig deeper or just gain some perspective: http://www2.broadwayworld.com/grossescumulative.cfm?sortby=totaltotalGross&orderby=desc

On a side note, even if Spiderman passes out The Phantom of the Opera, it still wouldn't be the biggest musical because Spiderman uses a theater draw size orchestra and people just buy tickets to here the orchestra and not Spiderman. Not to mention that Spiderman strategically schedules it's show times before and after lunch/dinner, so this musical is drawing people who have eaten lunch and who haven't yet eaten dinner, which increases the attendance!

Also, if CATS were to go back on broadway, even though it is a closed play, it would out gross Spiderman, so CATS is a bigger draw then Spiderman too........oh wait, that's the conversation that will be taking place in 12 years, sorry about that....lol

The soundtrack debuted at 86 on Billboard's Hot 200 Albums. Rise above 1 debuts on BB's Rock Top 50 (includes all sub-genres) at #48. It rises from 14 to 12 on the Adult Rock Chart. It's at #8 on the "taking off" chart for Hot AC, with 28 total stations now playing the song in regular rotation.

If the musical maintains it's popularity, I see no reason why the soundtrack can't eventually go platinum.
