That still leaves a gap of 260 copies. This is most likely the # of the advance vinyl pressing copies put on sale at Amoeba & Looney Tunes in late September.
And there were 300 copies of that vinyl and the stores all "sold out"...so that could mean about 40 were really just taken away by store owners (particularly from Looney Tunes) to scalp over on eBay.

So they almost doubled US sales! Wow!

I do think that this speaks to itunes penetration/usage in these markets vs the USA.

Rumor is that Brazil had pretty massive sales too.

World Wide sales are in.....opens up at #2 with 195,000 albums sold

Worldwide total:

Week1-28k
Week2-195k(223k total)

For comparison purposes, NLOTH opened world wide with 1.18 million, Bomb 1.8 million.

Not bad. How many albums did the #1 sell?

It was Florida Georgia Line and they sold 216k. Those totals are from Canada and the US(I'm thinking those were the only countries it was released to).

So close to #1....

That article is ridiculous.

While they acknowledge declining CD sales and the fact that SOI was free for a month, they say SOI failed to sell well and put the blame on U2.

Really?

So you think having a FREE album, that was fully downloaded 26M times and partially downloaded 81M times just had a minor affect on album sales?

Anyone who thinks this is truly biased and should be ignored.

This serves as my proof. The #1 album worldwide sold only 216K albums. This album was NOT given away for free. It did not have 26M downloads. Yet it outsold U2's release by only 21K albums. And if one combines Weeks 1 and 2 (as Week 1 was only a few days), U2 technically have the best selling album this week worldwide.

My view is the opposite of that author. DESPITE having 26M FREE downloads, U2 still manages to hit #2 on the worldwide charts in sales. THAT is an accomplishment - not the fact that this album sold less than HTDAAB or NLOTH. That was always a given.

Furthermore, if one of the SOI songs breaks through, SOI may ultimately sell very well, so...

Lol. Yeah Doc. I just posted this over in another thread.

This is hilarious. From Mediatraffic, the site that does the world sales chart.

After the trouble with the free album download on iTunes a few weeks ago, the new U2 effort 'Songs Of Innocence' fails also at retail. Compared with the former albums, the first week sale-results of the new effort are disastrous. Some comparisons: 'Songs Of Innocence' earned only 28.000 copies in the USA, the former album 'No Line On The Horizon' moved massive 484.000 units in its debut frame. In United Kingdom the new set sold 16.000 copies in its initial week, the former effort opened with 158.000 sales. Globally 'Songs Of Innocence' starts at no.2 this week with 195.000 sales, 'No Line On The Horizon' was a big no.1 smash with stellar 1,18 million initial sales. It's clear, one reason of the terrible sales is, that million of iTunes user having a free copy of the album, another reason are the sharply falling album sales worldwide. But on the other hand it seems that the Irish rock legend U2 has passed their zenith.

Then later in the article - talking about US charts it states that the album generated 26 million downloads in one month.

You just want to reach out and slap these idiots. The "troubled" Apple release garnered 26 million downloads. I would love to see what a month-troubled release would do!!

They gave the album away free for a month, and it is number one in at least 8 countries and top ten everywhere else. Number 2 worldwide and that's "disastrous"?!?!?!?
