NLOTH Week 3

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that follows U2.

One more item to add. Per HITS, J. Holiday's album, "Round 2", debuted at #4 album last week, with sales of 56,453 copies. This week, the album saw a 72% decline, dropping to #22 with sales of 15,982.

I point this out because here is yet another example of a huge second week drop, to go along with Clarkson and The-Dream. U2 at least had a huge debut, so a big second week drop might be expected (similar to a summer blockbuster seeing a big second week drop after monster numbers the first week). But J. Holiday's album debuted with only 56K in sales and still dropped big. Clarkson had almost half of U2's sales, yet still dropped big.

All of this indicates that:
  1. Springsteen's second week drop of only 53% may have indeed been due to his Super Bowl performance - the drop was big, but not as big as it could have been;
  2. sales, regardless of genre, are soft overall;
  3. there can be big first weeks for hotly anticipated albums, despite softer sales;
  4. some albums can still sell very well, but because they remain at a stead 15-50K for a long period of time (e.g. Taylor Swift) - 10 years ago, those sales would have pushed an album out of the top 20 on the high end and out of the Top 50 on the low end, now those sales levels put an album in the Top 25 (excluding the holiday season).

Not too bad at all, good to see :) Also obviously people are still flocking to see U2 on tour...when the US dates go on sale thats when it will be very interesting to see the demand down there.

any big debuts next week?

would love to see NLOTH edge out Kelly had a little lamb for #1

There are handful of debuts coming out this week in the U.S.A. (hannah montana ost, keri hilson, mastodon, papa roach, blue october, the decemberists, indigo girls), so i don't think NLOTH will be at the top spots next week. A place between 5-10 is more possible for me.Even in the i-tunes albums chart NLOTH is now out of the top 10 due to these new releases, although yesterday was at #3. So the most important thing for the weeks to come is not the position in the chart, but the sales of the album.

USA billboard 200 :week ending march 22,2009

#2 NLOTH (up from #3) , sales this week: 76,317 (-43 %) ,total sales:693,310

Anyone able to look at perecent of total album sales, Horizon vs. HTDAAB for the first three weeks each charted? That might level the playing field with respect to the impact of today's economy, etc.

I wouldnt really say "big" considering some of the other drops,

I agree. HITS is usually close and really, they were only about 1000 off from SoundScan. The drop is bigger because the HITS' numbers were lower last week. So combine a lower number last week with a higher number this week and you get a 38% drop vs. 43% drop from SoundScan. Still, it's about the same. Better is the fact that U2 increased to #2 on the charts. Years from now, people will look at the charts and simply see 1-3-2. I recall when "Pop" had a run of 1-2-8 in its first three weeks, critics (who couldn't wait to pounce on U2 for some reason) were already taunting how the album was almost out of the Top 10.

Also of note, ATYCLB did spend its first three weeks as #1 in the world. Looks like NLOTH will match that.

grasping for numbers

Is nloth still being sold at amazon for 3.99? that price is very sobering if you consider first week sales

Notice, it only actually spent 3 weeks in the top 10, something that NLOTH has already tied. In ATYCLB 3rd week, it was at #12, while NLOTH is at #2!

wow BOMB had some incredible numbers its first few weeks. Holiday release+ipod commercial+hot lead single=big sales. And for NLOTH they release an album in March with Boots as the lead single :doh:

Still #1 in Iceland, third week in a row.

Magnificent is up to #3 from #4 on most played songs on Icelandic radio and is doing much better than Boots did (highest at #13 I think).

U2 Tops European Albums Chart For Third Week

Billboard's European Top 100 Albums is headed for a third week by U2's "No Line on the Horizon" (Mercury/Universal), and Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" (Interscope/Universal) starts a fifth week atop European Hot 100 Singles.

The U2 album continues at No. 1 in Spain, Italy, Portugal, Switzerland, Hungary, the Belgian region of Flanders and makes a chart-topping debut in Greece. It tumbles 1-6 in the United Kingdom and is also down 1-2 in Ireland and Austria. Lady Gaga's "The Fame" continues to tail U2 on the composite chart, at No. 2 for a second week after climbing 2-1 in Ireland and Austria, 3-2 in Germany, 5-3 in Denmark and 8-7 in the United Kingdom.

I dont think you're counting week 1 of 2009 on media traffic's website. I know that it may technically be part of 2008 sales but are we sure its not counted toward 2009 since it is listed as week 1?

This isn't from mediatraffic. If week 1 from mediatraffic isn't there then it must be on the list for 2008

Concert Haul: U2 Tour Racks Up A $19M Monday (LYV)

By contrast, the band's latest album, No Line on the Horizon, sold 692,000 copies in the U.S. during its first three weeks of release (the fourth week of sales data won't be out until tomorrow). Multiplying that by the MSRP for the album ($13.98), we determined the band generated $9,674,160 from the album's U.S. sales.

This data isn't scientific but, even accounting for error, the results show how much more lucrative touring is than album sales, particularly in the case of a legendary act such as U2.

U2 at 6 on Hitsdailydouble with about 51K in sales overall I wouldnt say thats a bad result. As long as they can sell consistantly thats all that matters.
