Everyone was wondering when sales would stabilize in the USA and it looks like they did in week 17. Since week 17, the album has sold an average of 5,177 copies a week, with the low being 4,339 , and the high being 5,819.

We will without a doubt see a sales spike this week and throughout the tour in the US and Canada.

After the Chicago shows, I bought a copy of "U2:18" and NLOTH for my sister (who saw her first U2 show on Saturday - we had great upgraded seats - original seats from the fan club were crap).

I thought she might like another "souvenir" (so far, she and her bf are listening to "U2:18" more).

Regardless, that's one more copy of the album purchased! Now, if we can only get a fraction of the 160K (?) that saw U2 in Chicago to buy NLOTH, we should see a nice little sales spike. :sexywink:

was there ever a doubt...lol

looks like U2 will eclipse my 1 million sold in the U.S. by October prediction by a week or two....still impressive #'s when you look at the lack of almost any airplay at most radio stations around the U.S.

you mean you weren't one of those guys predicting 1 million by june? good for you.

What's interesting is the 1000 copy boost in sales NLOTH received last week, yet the relatively small jump in the charts (97 to 88). The last time NLOTH had sales that high, it charted at #76. I wonder if the rise on the charts/sales will continue, especially given the huge audiences in Chicago and Boston (and now with New York coming this week). Regardless, as was pointed out earlier, the album definitely has remained constant since Week 17, boucing between 4300-5900 in sales for 11 weeks now (wish it was higher, but I'll take this - better than falling out of the Top 200 as "Pop" did back in 1997).

Is it just me or the sales increase in the US is kind of disappointing?
The tour is breaking every record here and there and yet we see an increase in album sales of only 1000 copies? I guess those numbers are prior to the concerts in Giant Stadium but I don´t expect to see a significant increase next week if the effect of two of the larger markets (Chicago and Boston) was just 1000 additional copies.

Excluding the 6000 number as that is just an estimate (the value could be higher), you are right in that there was "only" a sales increase of 1000 copies the week prior. However, that's a 20% increase! That alone is impressive. And often a tour just holds an album steady. In contrast, sales of 5833 are the highest NLOTH has seen since Week 16! So while the numbers are still modest overall, it is good to see the increase.

a tour isn't gonna put a album right back into #1. just cause. lol.

not in america, but in other countries possibly. back to #1 in spain if i recall correctly, and didnt ATYCLB and HTDAAB get back to #1 in ireland in 2001 and 2005 respectively? sadly NLOTH did nowhere near as well.

any one ever figure out about how much illegal sales and cherry picking songs off legal websites costs the average album in sales?

:applaud:

Thanks Tallarico for the update! Nice to see that my estimate of 6000 for Week 29 was actually too low. And nice to see the album gain even more this week (both on the charts and in sales). We haven't seen sales of 6600 since Week 16.

Sadly, once "Pop" fell out of the Top 100 back in 1997, it did not recover. The tour also didn't seem to help. I don't have the data to confirm, but I recall reading that "Pop" lasted just 28 weeks in the Top 200. In contrast, NLOTH has twice fallen out of the Top 100 only to see a resurgence each time and hasn't fallen below #108.

Arguments can be made about U2 having a huge stadium tour for this album, but I think the huge tour has helped NLOTH worldwide. Fans are often hearing it for the first time at a concert and buying the album shortly thereafter, and this includes the U.S. The lack of a huge hit single sadly won't propel NLOTH to huge heights but this tour is doing exactly what it should - help promote the album.

That's impossible to ever find out for illegal downloads

Cherry Picking? Not much. Magnificent in the first week sold a fair few, after that the songs haven't been selling much

I agree with regards to NLOTH that "cherry picking" didn't hurt much. However, I bet it could have hurt HTDAAB or ATYCLB more as "Vertigo" and "Beautiful Day" would have become biggeer iTunes hits, meaning less album sales (to this day, BD remains U2's top hit in the rock singles section of iTunes).

Also, other artists have had big hits on iTunes, selling hundreds of thousands of copies, yet the corresponding album falters.

This was the worry about 45 rpm for a while - the record would sell, but not the album. For years, it didn't matter as labels pushed the singles, but not the album. But as albums make more money, there was a transition and the album was promoted more. Labels worried that a single could hurt an album. This could be one reason why singles were slowly fazed out. Some argue that CD singles sales dropped - and that's true - but CD singles started including 5 or more remixes of a song and suddenly cost $7-10! No one wants to buy a single for that much! So CD singles sales dropped and it became all about the album. iTunes has changed that again and it does appear there is some effect from "cherry picking".

As NLOTH did not deliver a big hit for U2, the "cherry picking" effect is minimal. But if U2 have a huge hit with their next album, I wouldn't be surprised to see the song do well at the expense of the album (although U2's fan base is strong enough to guarantee good sales for a while).

So very well said....I could overhear some people after the concert in DC saying how they loved the opening song and Magnificent and that they hadnt heard the songs on the radio...as you said the tour is doing what its supposed to do - help promote the album...the thing I cant figure out is the two concerts I went to..both in DC/Maryland and Charlottesville,Virginia they didnt play Unknown Caller and that's one of the best songs on NLOTH...in DC they didnt play both UC and NLOTH ...not a smart thing to do in my opinion

hmmm well U2 have such a strong back catalogue that a decent chunk of the audience are there to hear the hits and just go to the bar during the new songs- so probably aren't bothered about buying the new stuff

plus the album hasn't evidently had a big hit song in the US either so it has very low profile (poor choice of lead single didn't help much either)
