As I've said before, these charts are updated daily (twice), and COBL shows no signs of letting up, moving faster than any song I've seen on this chart all year. Not even Green Day had two songs in the Top 10 on Triple A this year, although they did have 3 songs in the Top 30 at one time.

Here's the Mainstream Rock chart from mediabase.com

COBL is also the hottest song on Mainstream Rock, and nearly 9 months after release, Vertigo is still in the Top 30 on this format but is considered "recurrent" after six months on the chart. Billboard counts Active Rock (harder) and Mainstream Rock formats together as their "Mainstream Rock" chart, so I don't expect to see COBL on Billboard until it reaches the Top 5 on Mainstream Rock Radio...even then, it's not suited for Active Rock, so it will likely not chart very high on Billboard due to the format splits. Even if it reached #1 on Mainstream Rock Radio, that may only be good enough for #20 on Billboard, unless the song is picked up by Active Rock.

Billboard's Modern Rock correlates with Alternative Rock Radio, and COBL is just now showing signs of SOME airplay on this format, as here it is on the "Taking Off" and "Jump" charts from mediabase.com

Only one station picked up the song in the last 7 days, but the "Jump" chart below shows where it's at overall. It's too early too tell if COBL can break through on Alternative Radio and reach the Top 10. It is probably around #50 or so right now.

Mediaguide.com has also updated their radio play charts, which run through this past Sunday. It's not as real-time as mediabase.com, and they don't monitor the same radio stations. In general, though, one should back up the other over time.

On Net Music Countdown, Sometimes bounces up two spots to #10 on Hot AC. No U2 on the ARC Top 40 or MGB Top 40. That's not surprising, as these two charts include sales, airplay, and video play. MTV and VH1, in the U.S. anyway, updated their playlists for this week on Monday, and still no COBL. Much Music has it in "light rotation", actually sighting the fact that the video is so similar to Speed of Sound that it was not put into heavy rotation.

Radio and Records update later, along with BB for North America and Europe.

Cheers!

Maybe I get the whole Top 200 this week, lots of increases in sales from last week.

at last, an increase in sales & position in US!! Maybe the hype from European Tour is spreading across the Atlantic (as well as COBL). Let's just hope Bomb can now stay on BB top 200 for rest of year.

thanks for the figures soldatti :)

good to see an increase on the US charts, maybe City Of Blinding Lights is making a slight dent.

Billboard and other N.A. charts

Billboard update:

In U.S.:
HTDAAB at 106 (109)
B/O 1980-1990 at 36 (41)
Sometimes at 25 (20) on Adult Top 40

In Canada:
HTDAAB at 58 (60)
Sometimes at 19 (15) on Top 100 Airplay
COBL debuts at 2 on Singles Sales Chart - All 4 U2 singles still in Top 30 or so
HTDAAB at 24 (28) on Alternative Albums Top 50
B/O 1980-1990 at 48 (66) on same chart

Radio and Records update:

In U.S.:

Mainstream Rock
COBL at 19 (23) with a bullet
#2 on "Increased plays"

Alternative Rock
COBL at #2 "Most New and Active"
(This puts it at #52 on Alternative Rock)

Hot AC
Sometimes falls from 20 to 24

Triple A
Sometimes slips to 6 (4)
COBL up to 13 (30)
COBL #1 in "Increased Plays"

In Canada:

Rock
Sometimes at 24 (18)
COBL at #2 "Most New and Active"
(This puts it at 32 on the Rock Chart)
COBL at #3 "Most Added Stations"

Hot AC
Sometimes at 12 (10)

Sometimes has peaked but has been a very slow song to fade away...just as it took a while to catch on the formats where it did do well. COBL is moving up fast on the traditional U2 formats...Mainstream Rock and Triple A Rock. However, it is showing some signs of life on Alternative Rock, as it's the 52nd most played song on that format right now. U2 songs are not "made" for a give radio format in the U.S., other than songs like Vertigo & ABOY. COBL's fate on Billboard rests with it's potential on Modern Rock and if it crosses over into Mainstream Radio. Otherwise, it will follow the path of peaking on Mainstream Rock and Triple A before finishing up on Adult Top 40. Still would be a modest hit, but it won't be gaining a "new" audience.

As for the video, the one thing I've noticed is that the import COBL single that WAS available at Amazon.com starting June 14 is now listed with a July 5 release date. The only reason I mention this is that maybe the video in the U.S. has been delayed to that week as well. IF the video makes a splash, then MAYBE the song will hit mainstream radio, as it should be at the top of Triple A and Mainstream Rock by then, and hopefully charting on Modern Rock, too.

As you can see, I'm hoping COBL can be the big hit that it should be in the U.S., despite no commercial release or promotion. It is probably one of the most "mainstream" songs off of HTDAAB, so we'll see.

Longshot

Do you think that it can enter the Hot 100 or get near to that?

The Hot 100 is so much more dependent on downloads these days...Speed of Sound is the perfect example. The only way COBL could crack it, IMO, is to have the song chart in the Top 20 of Modern Rock, Mainstream Rock, and the Adult Top 40 AT THE SAME time, which has not been the pattern of their songs. Or, if the song was to be picked up by Mainstream/Pop radio, it would also stand a good chance on the Hot 100.

Right now, the song has not even been released to Mainstream/Pop radio, and it's not on any playlists of the monitored stations for Radio and Records.

If the single and b-sides were available for download, then I would say COBL had a good chance to at least crack the Hot 100. W/O that, it's a longshot, and appears to be following the same pattern as Sometimes. Sometimes did crack Modern Rock and peaked at 29. If COBL cracks the Top 20 of Modern Rock, then the chances of cracking the Hot 100 go up. Time will tell.

Why HTDAAB is at 106 in Soldatti list and in the hanboo analysis at ukmix appears in the number 110. Thank you.

Why HTDAAB is at 106 in Soldatti list and in the hanboo analysis at ukmix appears in the number 110. Thank you.

'cos there are 2 versions of BB top 200 : 1 with catalogue albums & 1 without. This version from Hanboo includes catalogue albums. But the 'official' version, which soldatti uses, is the one without catalogue albums.

Hanboo is using the Billboard Comprehensive Albums chart from November 29, 2003, onwards. The position on the Billboard 200 is #106 and including catalog titles & exclusive albums the album is #110. We can say that the real position is the last one.

Look this article about the Comprehensive chart:
"Also worth noting is the debut of Alanis Morissette's Starbucks-exclusive "Jagged Little Pill Acoustic" at No. 17 on Billboard's Top Comprehensive Albums chart. The Maverick/Warner Bros. set, which sold 56,000 copies through the Seattle-based coffee retailer's U.S. outlets, is not eligible to chart on The Billboard 200 unless it is generally available to all retailers. The Comprehensive chart, however, does include certain retailer-exclusive product as well as catalog titles. "Acoustic" will expand to other retailers outside of Starbucks on July 26. "

Top Hits Online (THO) Hot 100

This chart has been gaining in popularity and credibility recently, and "Top Hits Online" is often very similar to the Billboard Hot 100. Here is this week's write-up and chart. (Sometimes is at 19 and COBL is the highest debut at 73)

Another #1 for Mariah

Less than a year ago, most people would have predicted that Mariah Carey would never have another #1 song on the THO 100, despite her rabid fan base. This week her fans can celebrate her second #1 single of 2005, as "We Belong Together" barely beats out Coldplay and Gwen Stefani for the top position. Last week it seemed Coldplay and Stefani would battle it out for #1, but Mariah had the largest point gain on the chart. This is the first time in years (we haven't had time to dig through the archives) that three songs top the 100-point barrier, which is usually a good indication of a current or future #1 song. Obviously, the next few weeks will be very interesting at the top. What else is going on inside the weekly chart? Here are some highlights:

"Since U Been Gone" by Kelly Clarkson moves back into the top 10.

U2 have their second top 20 hit of 2005

Anna Nalick and Avril Lavigne move into the top 40 with new songs.

James Blunt, Natasha Bedingfield, and Rachel Stevens have the largest chart moves.

The longest-running THO 100 song is Keane's "Everybody's Changing."

U2 leads 11 new songs onto the chart.

A former top 10 song by Usher exits the chart.
The THO 100 is based on over 300 personal charts from all over the world and is published weekly.
