Another chart that shows the success of Sometimes in the U.S. - this is the Rick Dees Top 40 Adult Mix, which is played every weekend on many of the Adult Top 40 radio stations. The 2nd column is the current week's performance, and as you can see, Sometimes climbs another spot for this week...

Radio and Records is the preferred chart for Top 40-50 radio shows

Other Top 40 radio shows, like Casey Casem and Dick Clark, use the Radio and Records radio play charts for their weekly shows. Just proves that even they don’t bother with Billboard – they are radio-based shows so they use the actual radio-based charts.

Straight from http://www.americantop40.cc/, you see the statement “Chart Listings for Casey's Shows (AC, Hot AC, CHR/Pop) are available at Radio & Records,” which I’ve been using every week for a while now as one of the sources for North American Radio Charts. I remember listening to these shows as a kid…and so kids who are listening to the various radio Top 40 or 50 chart shows are hearing Sometimes each week, as here are the chart positions for Sometimes on Radio and Records for Sometimes:

Adult Top 40 – 16
Pop – 48
AC – 44
Hot AC – 17

Even though it has been a VERY slow riser, Sometimes has been rising steadily on all 4 formats since March. It has been stuck between 14 and 17 on the Adult Top 40 and Hot AC, but it’s been in that range consistently for 3 months, which even for these very slow moving charts is impressive. The song has probably peaked or is peaking on most formats, and peaked long ago on Modern and Alternative Rock. I think the song’s modest success but universal critical praise set it up for several potential Grammy nominations.

Beyond Radio.com

I totally forgot about this chart...it's a comprehensive average of over 400 radio play charts compiled by DJ's, Radio Stations, The Rick Dees of the world, etc. Sometimes peaked at #6 on this chart several weeks ago, and it's still a respectable #15. Some songs are very similar to their BB Hot 100 positions...others are not. Sales are not a factor. Notice that Coldplay's Speed of Sound is the last song on what I cut and pasted at #60. It debuted on the Pop 100 at 75 this week on BB, too. Dr. Who, another indicator of where BB is way off on some songs, no doubt due to the download factor skewing results in a big way. More charts to come!

real MUSIC GUIDE

Another up and coming online music store is real MUSIC GUIDE, part of Real Player and their venture into online music. Check out their top sellers in the Pop/Rock Adult Alternative Section. Since no one makes money off of a $.99 downloaded single or album track, I can't understand why the Best of 1980-1990 is not for sale as an album, but allows a person to download tracks only. The only explanation I can think of is that the strategy is to get customers to download tracks from multiple albums, and then hope the result is multiple album purchases instead of just one.

Either way, these charts are just another indication of the supposed battle between U2 and Coldplay for "Best Band in the World", which U2 clearly has this distinction locked up right now. I think history will treat U2 up in the ranks with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, & Pink Floyd as the greatest bands of the 21st century. With U2 being relevant well into this century and being arguably the best live act in history, they may well be regarded at the top band of all time 20 years from now, which I think the Beatles still have that honor right now. U2 is often mentioned as having sold 140M+ albums. If you break up their career into three 8 year phases, it breaks down something like this:

1980-1988 Album sales = 59M
1989-1997 Album sales = 45M
1998-2005 Album sales = 50M

This is using the edge3's albums sales estimate posted a while back that looked like this:

Boy - 3M
October - 3M
War - 8M
UABRS - 8M
UF - 8M
WAIA - 2M
JT - 27M
R&H - 14M
AB - 17M
Zooropa - 8M
Pop - 6M
Best of 80-90 - 16M
ATYCLB - 12M
Best of 90-00 - 4M
HTDAAB - 8M (10M shipped already, though)
Total = 144M

This shows a very balanced, consistent career, and it's front-loaded since it assumes that each album had all it's sales in the year it came out, which is way off. If anything, since 1997, U2 have sold 56M albums from what was released in that period, and a conservative estimate of back catalog sales for that same period puts U2 at about 65M in albums sales since 1997. Has ANY BAND come close to that since 1997? I cannot think of one. Then look at their touring history...not only have they always been a major draw, but they had some of the most innovative tour ideas & themes of all-time as well. And today, their concert draw is arguably as high as it's ever been.

Anyway, here are the sales charts from real MUSIC GUIDE.

....these figures for each album were not meant to be 'front loaded' or first year sales - these are my 'official' estimated total album sales TO DATE based on all the sales info I've read/heard about U2 over the years....

....but I do agree that U2 have probably sold about 56-65M albums worldwide since 1997 & (for bands/groups at least) possibly only the Beatles have sold more since 1997 : '1' has sold est. 30M + est. 4-5M catalogue album sales per year = 60M+.

I can't add, that's all. It should say 40M since 1998, 46M since 1997, and about 57M (12M back catalog that would need to come out of the first two "phases"). My mistake:|

Sometimes slipping on several formats

mediabase.com updates their radio play charts daily, but comparing today versus last Monday, here's what's happening to Sometimes:

Hot AC
Sometimes drops from 16 to 17

Rock
Sometimes drops 3 spots to 28

Triple A
Sometimes drops 1 to 3

mediabase only shows the top 20 or 30 positions on their public site, but both mediaguide and the more accurate radio & records show Sometimes still rising on the Pop format and AC format. It is likely that the song has probably peaked or will peak on all formats soon, just in time for COBL. I have no idea or predictions on how COBL will do as a single...this is a case where the video, which should not be the radio edit, should be pretty cool and show one of the highlights of the tour, musically and visually. That could help the song catch on with radio, but who knows. The Bomb has sold a lot of "legit" albums in an industry that's in the tank due to piracy & free downloading...I really wonder how many people "are on the fence" about legally purchasing the album at this point...but time will tell. I thought 4 shows in a major market like Chicago would increase sales significantly, but no sign of the album on the Hits Top 50, anyway. I still expect an increase, though.

NMC

Net Music Countown has Sometimes up on two formats:

Alternative:

Sometimes rises 1 spot to #9

Hot AC

Sometimes rises 2 spots to #8

Album sales

HTDAAB holds steady at #7

More evidence that Sometimes has peaked

mediaguide, the 2nd largest radio monitoring source other than Radio and Records, updated today and shows that Sometimes has peaked but Vertigo and ABOY still have a presence on a few radio formats:

AC
Sometimes falls from 44 to 48...short run on that format

College Singles
Sometimes re-enters the Top 100 at 86 w/bullet...volatile chart

Hot AC
Sometimes holds at 21 but is losing ground
Vertigo slides to 46 after it's re-entry that peaked at 40

Mainstream Rock
Vertigo at 37 but with a bullet
ABOY at 48 w/bullet

Triple A
Sometimes slides from 2 to 3

Most played "album cuts" on rock
HTDAAB rises from 19 to 13

I'm sure U2 has been all over the radio in Chicago, NY, Boston, Philly, and NJ with the tour 1st leg wrapping up in these areas. That might be why rock radio played Vertigo and ABOY more in the last few weeks, and as for album cuts, COBL has been on several Northeastern radio station playlists for a while now. I hope it starts showing up on the national radio formats sooner than later.

....I think I misunderstood what you were saying about my estimated sales being 'front loaded' : so, yes, in the context of you're original estimated sales divided into 3 phases my estimated album sales ARE front loaded.

Right....so a conservative estimate of 57M since 1997 - including back catalogue....Gotch ya!

I've just done a bit of research &, I hate to say it, but I think the Backstreet Boys have sold more albums than U2 since 1997 - probably 70M+.

For individual artists I would say Shania Twain & Celine Dion have also probably sold more albums than U2 since 1997.

I'm afraid so, here's the figures :

17M min. worldwide (14M in US, 3M in Europe) : BACKSTREET BOYS (released 21/9/1996)
25M (5M in Europe) : BACKSTREET 's BACK (1997) - Official Site + IFPI
30M (13M in US, 2M in Europe) : MILLENNIUM (1999) - Official Site + IFPI
15M : BLACK & BLUE (2000) - Official Site
1M (Europe sales only) : GREATEST HITS - CHAPTER ONE
Total = 88M from Sept 1996-2005 or 71M+ from 1997-2005

The worldwide figures are all from the same source as the recent JT, AB, BO U2 figures (in the "Where U2 stands...." thread) - except Backsteet Boys & Greatest Hits which are still official.

I also have a copy of Musicweek from Nov 2000 which says that Backsteet Boys had sold 55M up to that point - obviously this doesn't include thair last 2 albums (16M min.) so I would say they've easily sold 70M+ albums since 1997.

That list of worldwide album sales figures was riddled with all kinds of incorrect figures plus figures that were not included. One of the incorrect figures was the Backstreet Boys with their MILLENNIUM album.

Lets remember that 70% of all albums sold on the planet are sold in the United States and Europe. The RIAA and IFPI cover these area's and it is easy to get an accurate estimate on the total sales of any album released since 1994 thanks to the start of the IFPI. By extrapolating the European figure for the remaining 30% of the world, plus adding the RIAA figure, one can arrive at a slightly overestimated figure for the total sales of any album. Inflated record label figures or lists without facts backing them up are not needed when it is easy enough to find out at a minimum 70% of the exact sales(shippments) of the album.

So for the Backstreet Boys we have:

Backstreet Boys (14 million USA; 3 million Europe; 3 million ROW)

TOTAL: 20 million worldwide

Backstreets Back (5 million Europe; 5 million ROW)

TOTAL: 10 million worldwide

MILLENNIUM (13 million USA; 2 million Europe; 2 million ROW)

TOTAL: 17 million worldwide

BLACK & BLUE (8 million USA: under 1m Europe; under 1m ROW)

TOTAL: 9 million worldwide

THE HITS- CHAPTER ONE (1 million USA; 1 million Europe; 1m ROW)

TOTAL: 3 million worldwide

TOTAL album sales worldwide: 59 million

That brings their total since 1997 to 59 million, and that figure is indeed a little higher than what the actual figure is since what an album sells in Europe on average will be higher than the figure for ROW.

There is no way in hell that MILLENNIUM sold 30 million copies with only 2 million in sales in Europe. Saying that sold 2 million in the ROW is probably to high.

Even worse is the figure for Backstreets Back, and album that was not released in the USA and only sold 5 million in Europe, yet the record label or someone else claims 25 million in sales? Virtually impossible. 10 million is an overestimate.

Black & Blue flopped overseas and was unable to even reach the 1 million mark in Europe. In addition, despite shipping initially in the first few weeks, 8 million copies in the USA, Soundscan shows the album only sold 5.5 million to date. I've never seen an album where retailers over ordered so many copies. Unless they made a large enough profit on the 5.5 million they did sell, retailers lost money on this album.

Believe me, I appreciate what you're saying STING2 and I would love to be able to exclude the Backstreet Boys on the basis that they were just a boy band...but that would just be too unfair, I mean they're still a 'band'...

...I agree that the 30M figure for Millenium seems a bit excessive....but 22M is still possible (70% of 22M = US + Europe figure of 15M).

Also - so why the hell does the 'official' RIAA version from Oct 2003 also have a figure of 30M for Millenium & 25M for Backstreet Boys (although this was released in Sept 1996 so it might have only sold 15-20M since 1997)? Is this rubbish as well?

....and what about the figure of 55M from Musicweek - the UK music industry bible - in Oct 2000? If we add on your estimated sales from their last 2 albums - 12M - to this figure we've still got a total of 67M which is still probably just more than U2 or any other band in the world, since 1997.

OK, so what are we saying then? Well, the RIAA site from 2003 currently has Backstreet Boys at 36M units sold/shipped in US since Sept 96 + 11M IFPI Europe + 10-12M ROW(?) = 57-59M...OK, so maybe they haven't sold more albums than U2 (56-65M) since 1997 - & I sure hope they haven't - but, whatever the figure (57M or 67M), you've got to admit, it must be pretty damn close.

RIAA does not do audits of albums sales outside of the United States. Any information it list would come from other sources and I believe the list was a set of "estimates". Musicweek once again is does not certify or audit sales in the UK or anywhere else. The BPI handles the UK audits.

Millenium sold 13 million in the USA and 2 million in Europe. There is no evidence that it sold 7 million in the ROW. Its highly unlikely and the ROW figure is usually less than the European figure. Thats why 17 million is most likely the highest sales figure that Millenium could have.

I stated 59 million before, but I think the actual figure is probably more like 55 million as I think its a slight over estimate to say that ROW sales would equal European sales.

I don't argue your point, but in the end, your analysis is just a guess.

Those figures come from official sources, and that was the only point in posting that list, to get an idea of what the top albums appear to be. Now are some of those number inflated? Absolutely. But these are the numbers released to the press, so that's why they get used in different articles.

This was the press release regarding the Backstreet Boys' Millennium album:

Black & Blue Breaks International Record

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Pop idols the Backstreet Boys (news - web sites)
sold five million copies of their new album in its first week of worldwide
release, setting a new international record, the group's publicist said
Tuesday.

In the United States alone, ``Black & Blue'' (Jive) sold 1.6 million units
in the six days from its Nov. 21 street date, enough to replace the Beatles
at the top of the charts.

The Backstreet Boys can lay claim as the first act to achieve million-plus
first-week U.S. sales with back-to-back albums, said publicity firm Mitch
Schneider Organization (MSO). Their last album, ``Millennium,'' debuted with
a then-record 1.1 million copies in May 1999. Its worldwide sales stand at
more than 30 million, MSO said.

Details of the previous international record for an album's first week sales
were not given in the statement.

``Black & Blue'' is already multi-platinum in Canada (5 times), Japan,
Korea, Mexico and Venezuela; platinum in Arabia (Gulf), Argentina, Brazil,
Colombia, Denmark, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, New Zealand,
Philippines, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand and the United States; and gold in
Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal,
Sweden, Switzerland and the U.K. Different countries have different
definitions of gold and platinum.

Yes, it's their own publicity firm releasing that figure, so do I think it's 100% correct? No way (and personally, I wish it hadn't sold anything). But this is a number that has been released, and that's why we see it used.

Shania Twain's global sales estimate:

Shania Twain (1 million USA; under 1m Europe; under 1 m ROW)

TOTAL: 2 million

The Women In Me (12 million USA; 2 million Canada; under 1m Europe; under 1m ROW)

The Women In Me is one of the biggest selling albums in Canadian history so it definitely so Canadian sales needs to have its own mention.

TOTAL: 15 million

Come On Over (20 million USA; 2 million Canada; 7 million Europe; 7 million ROW)

TOTAL: 36 million

UP (5.5 million USA; 1 million Canada; 2 million Europe; 2 million ROW)

TOTAL: 10.5 million

Greatest Hits (3 million USA; .6 million Canada; 1 million Europe; 1 million ROW)

TOTAL: 5.6 million

Over All total for Shania Twain is 69.1 million worldwide.

But 11 million of this total was sold PRIOR to 1997.

This puts Shania Twain's total since 1997 at:

58 million

This is close to U2's figure since 1997 of 60 million, but still slightly less.

My analysis is FAR more than a guess!

It is a fact that RIAA does official audits of album sales in the United States which covers 37% of the global music market. That is a fact!

It is a fact that IFPI does official audits of album sales in Europe. It covers 33% of the global market.

Together the RIAA and IFPI cover 70% of the global music market. It is rare and unusual that an album will have more sales from the ROW(rest of the world 30%) than it will from Europe that covers 33% of the market.

Lets remember that RIAA and IFPI do official audits of sales. Their not a record label or a promotion firm. They count what has been sold and that is it!

The music industry is often filled with HYPE and inflated figures and inflated stories of success. When your looking for ACCURATE information on sales figures whether it be for an album or concert tour, you go no further than the auditing organizations such as RIAA, IFPI, BPI, CRIA or for the concert industry Amusement Business.

RIAA certifies US sales not sales from any other country. A random list of sales from outside the USA that they put together is no more accurate than what some newspaper or a PR firm would do. The only thing that is 100% accurate from RIAA is its audits of US album sales. That is what they do.

On average, one can guage the global sales of an album with the figures from RIAA and IFPI because these two organization cover 70% of the music market.

As for the Backstreet Boys PR firms, they should take notice that "Millennium" only sold 2 million copies in Europe and Black & Blue failed to even sale 1 million! The PR firms are pure hype and provide no audited information to prove their claims. Their about 60% correct with their figures.

Once again, pay attention to the organizations that do the audits, that is where you will find the facts. Unfortunately, the IFPI just started in 1994 and does not certify albums released before that year. But for albums released since 1994, the IFPI combined with the RIAA allow one to get a very accurate estimate of any album's total album sales do to the fact that they cover 70% of the music market and sales in the remaining 30% of the market tend to be lower for American and Euopean artist than they are in their respective territories.

I certainly know where the official numbers come from for the U.S. and Europe, but not being able to adequately account for the remaining 30% in the ROW is a large loophole.

I understand your theory about the remaining 30%, but I think the sales fluctuate far too much for each artist in the ROW, and thus it is very difficult to determine the exact sales.

Its not a large loophole when you consider the fact that most "western artist" sale the majority of their albums in the USA and Europe. That is a fact. Taking the European figure and extrapolating it over the remaining 30% gives one a slightly inflated figure of sales, but is generally a very accurate estimate.

In addition, sales figures from countries in the ROW will often be known such as Brazil, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and Japan. These five countries combined make up over 50% of the ROW market. So its often possible to have precise sales figures for as much as 85% of the global market. Canada finally has a searchable database and it won't be long before the other four countries will have the same thing as well.

The Backstreet Boys and Shania Twain have not sold as many albums as U2 "all time" or since 1997.

Celine Dion though appears to have sold almost as much as U2 in her career if not more and she has definitely sold more albums than U2 and probably anyone for that matter since 1997.

Celine Dion's total album sales to date are 130 to 140 million worldwide. She has sold about 95 million albums since January of 1997. Celine Dion has sold somewhere between 10 million and 14 million albums in Canada alone. Somewhere because she has 4 Diamond albums and it is not know how close each of them is to double diamond status. The only artist that have sold more albums in Canada than Celine Dion are probably the Beatles.

I took the totals from the RIAA, IFPI, and CRIA and estimated for the ROW based on IFPI totals.

Nasty drop in sales for Bomb but seems to be a VERY small week for sales overall.

Thanks for the figures Soldatti.

THANKS SOLDATTI for the figures!

This is the largest drop we have seen in some time with the album falling to 14,303 in sales. Hopefully the special Friday morning will be seen by many and will see a spike up in next weeks sales.

Week 25 in the USA comparison between ATYCLB and BOMB:

ATYCLB:

#45 30,000 copies sold TOTAL: 2,394,000

HTDAAB:

#71 14,303 copies sold TOTAL: 2,720,176

Notice that the #45 album this week sold 19,286 : 36% down on ATCYLB's #45 total in 2001!!

It's been said before but I'll say it again - I reckon Bomb would now have sold 3.5M with the chart from 2000-2001.

Radio & Records, ARC Top 40, Canada airplay, and MTV surprise

After looking at countless charts and formats, Radio and Records seems to be the most accurate measure of a songs popularity on Radio, and the ARC is the most accurate measure of a songs total popularity considering airplay and video play. Billboard's specific formats are very similar to R&R, except for the Hot 100 and Pop 100, where CD sales, downloads, airplay, and who knows what else goes into the equation.

That being said, Sometimes has definitely peaked on R&R and COBL needs to be released to radio ASAP. Here's the chart positions for Sometimes by format:

Hot AC
Sometimes down 1 to 17

Pop
Sometimes down 1 to 49

Triple A
Sometimes down 2 to 3 after a very long run at the top

ARC Top 40
Sometimes plunges from 20 to 32 after a strong run on this chart
****************************************************
Canadian Radio & Records

Hot AC
Sometimes rises 1 to #4 w/bullet

Rock
Sometimes holds at #10 again
ABOY #3 on most played recurrents - would be at #27 on chart

AC
Sometimes holds at 22 w/bullet

Canadian Top 100 singles (Airplay only)
Sometimes holds at #4 for the 3rd week
****************************************************
MTV just updated their weekly Top 20 videos, and Sometimes actually rises one spot from 10 to 9. While U2 gets video support from all the music video channels, many times it's short-lived, especially on MTV. Not the case for Sometimes, though.

As for album sales, I am not really surprised. If anyone is inspired to get the album or some of the songs from the album heard in concert, they are all over the internet. I guess it is true that U2 is the most pirated band out there. The way their songs improve as they play them live on tour, I wouldn't doubt that many people are happy to simply download the concerts, which again are everywhere on the net. I've got at least 10 shows myself, and that's what I'm listening to now.
