They've now sold around 16m albums in the UK & if you mutliply this by about 3.5 i think we get a good idea of their overall European total. Per album i'd estimate the following European totals :

Boy : 1.2m
October : 1.2m
War : 3m
UABRS : 3.5m
UF : 2.5m
WIAIA : 0.5m
JT : 9m
R&H : 4m
AB : 5m
Zooropa : 2.8m
Pop : 2.5m
Best Of 80-90 : 7.5m
ATYCLB : 4.5m
Best Of 90-00 : 2.5m
HTDAAB : 3.8m

Total = ~53.5m

Thanks Edge3

But I want to discuss something. Like the Joshua Tree. Where did you get the other 2 milion to fill up the 9 million?

I was swayed by MJDangerous at 'Biggest selling Album of All time in Europe' thread at UKMIX.com. He's calculated that it's now the 14th best selling album in Europe ever with sales of 9.7m :

14 // U2 – The Joshua Tree

UK : 2.500.000
France : 2.000.000
Germany : 1.300.000
Italia : 600.000
Spain : 600.000
Sweden : 273.000
Switzerland : 200.000 ?
Netherland : 500.000
Finland : 27.965
Austria : 100.000

Total in these 10 countries = 8.100.965

He's then multiplyed this by a factor of 1.2 (same as with all the other albums) to give total estimated European sales of 9.700.000.

Admitedley, if i hadn't seen this i'd say it's now on 8-8.5m...or correct est. UK figure of 2.5m x by a factor of 3.5 = 8.750.000

Edge, could you break these figures down to individual countries, if you have the time, PLEASE?

I haven't got all the figures for each album & i haven't got the time to find them out now but i've got the following :

HTDAAB :

UK ~ 1,220,000
Italy ~ 530k
France ~ 460k
Germany ~ 390k
Spain ~ 200k (certified 2xPlat for 200k in week 14)
Holland ~ 185k
Ireland ~ 150k (certified 10xPlat for 150k within the last few months)
Portugal ~ 140k
Poland ~ 100k
Belgium ~ 90k
Switzerland ~ 80k
Sweden ~ 60k
Norway ~ 55k
Austria ~ 50k
Denmark ~ 80k (2xPlat)
Finland ~ 30k (I estimate it's sold 9K since 31.12.2004)
Greece ~ 25k
Czech Republic ~ 20k
Hungary ~ 10k
Slovenia ~ 9K
Total = ~ 3,884,000 (certified 3xPlat by IFPI in Dec 2004 for pan European sales of 3m)

Best Of 90-00 :

UK : ~ 850,000
Certified 2xP by IFPI in Nov 2002 for pan European sales of 2m. Has sold well across Europe in last 3.5 years.

ATYCLB :

UK : ~ 1,115,000
Certified 4xP by IFPI in early to mid 2002 for pan European sales of 4m. Has sold well since.

Best Of 80-90 :

UK : ~ 1,850,000
Certified 7xP by IFPI in Oct 2004 for pan European sales of 7m. Previously certified 6xP for 6m in 2001 so sold about another 1m in those 3 years. Continues to be their biggest catalogue seller (100k sold in UK alone in 2005).

Pop :

UK : ~ 450,000
Certified 2xP by IFPI in March 2000 for pan European sales of 2m

The above totals seem to be along the lines of UK total x by 3.5 = European total. Here's the approx up to date UK totals for the rest of the back catalogue (excluding music club sales) :

Zooropa : ~ 600,000
Achtung Baby : ~ 1,380,000
R&H : ~ 1,450,000
JT : ~ 2,500,000
WAIA : ~ 150,000
UF : ~ 880,000
UABRS : ~ 1,450,000
War : ~ 860,000
October : ~ 400,000
Boy : ~ 350,000

UABRS sold more than Achtung Baby?! And these albums are very undercertifited.

Based on the official sales info i've seen UABRS was the 45th best selling album of the 80's in the UK with total sales, to Dec ' 89, of over 1.2m. Achtung Baby meanwhile was, by Jan ' 98, the 59th best selling album of the 90's in the UK with total sales to this point of 1.13m. Also, UABRS has now still spent over 2x longer on the UK album chart than AB : a massive 203 wks on the old combined (various + artists) Top 100 compared to 'just' 87 wks for AB on the new, still going, artists only Top 75.

About the certifications : loads of albums are undercertfied, especially older albums. Record companies often just don't bother to get them re-certified either 'cos they're too busy doing other more important things &/or 'cos they have to pay a load of money to the BPI (to do an audit).

This is a fairly accurate list. After a great deal of research and number-crunching etc etc, I came up with these figures for Joshua Tree onwards

Joshua Tree - 8.7m
Rattle And Hum - 5m
Achtung Baby - 5m
Zooropa - 2.7m
Pop - 2.6m
Best of 80-90 - 7m
ATYCLB - 4.4m
Best of 90-00 - 2.9m
HTDAAB - 3.9m
U218 - 2.1m

I was curious to see which country sold the most HTDAAB-albums per capital. And after some calculations (based on the numbers of edge3) these are the (surprising) results:

#albums/100 inhabitants:

Ireland = 3,63
UK = 2,03
Denmark = 1,47
Portugal = 1,33
Norway = 1,2
Netherlands = 1,10
Switzerland= 1,07
Italy = 0,90
Belgium = 0,86
France = 0,76
Sweden = 0,66
Austria = 0,61
Finland = 0,57
Germany = 0,47
Spain = 0,46
Slovenia= 0,45
Poland = 0,26
Greece = 0,22
Czech Republic = 0,20
Hungary = 0,10

Based on the numbers given by edge3
