I remember U2 were very serious about a 2002 stadium tour of Europe and South America. These were more than just fan generated rumors, yet U2 never announced anything, and then issued a statement saying no 2002 tour dates. Rumor was Oasis were suppose to Co-headline all the European dates. Looks like this eventually became the 2005 Euro tour.

Why didn't they do this? Makes no sense now that U2 wouldn't play dates in order to make more money for the Elevation tour.

Because they didn't want to tour anymore for the Elevation Tour in 2002. They wanted to go back into the studio and work on new songs. Of course, in the end it took almost four years before HTDAAB saw the light, but at that time they were hopeful they could release an album quite soon.
Despite what many people on this forum may think, not everything in U2 revolves around making money.

I see a parallel with now (SOA)....

Completely agree with that! (although u2.com is there to make money... ;-)

Kind of. HTDAAB came out around 2.5 years after they were done with Elevation (Super Bowl), it was 4 years since the release of ATYCLB. Similarly the perceived 5 year gap between HTDAAB and NLOTH (which is actually 4 years, 4 months) is significantly less when you consider that Vertigo was going on until December of 2006.

some people round off by year. i find myself doing it too. if a band releases a album in dec 2004, and then another one in jan 2006 it took 2 years. not 14 months.
