yea I talked to my friend that programs music into stores like muzak and they dropped it from there too. Not even piped in music even want to play city. Its a poor shame

U2 need to freakin promote the song its to good of a song to be passed by. I can't believe they wont do something to promote it or something. Even a commecial with it playing in the US something. It just shows how much they care about the charts. It seems everything about this album is going to trash. They need to agnolge this song even is out as a single other then that video they shot in Europe.

City is doing very well around the rest of the world though...as have Sometimes & Vertigo. But i agree that City needs to be promoted more in the US.

Have you seen the HBO show, "Entourage"? This past weeks episode features the band playing all of COBL live while as characters from the show see a U2 concert.

^ Perfect timing as the song was just recently added to a ton of stations under a certain format (Hot AC, I think).......while I don't think the song will be a monster, it's definitely gaining ground now, if anything.

Bono said recently that they still have the audicity to compete in the pop market. Well guys, if that's your goal then you're getting your butts kicked in the U.S. Please find someone that can implement some kind of rational strategy for singles.

:| I think the song is very good, too....but maybe it's too U2ish to be competitive in the Pop market. To be honest I very much doubted this as a single in the first place. It lacks a good chorus! "Oh you look so beaaaauutiiful tonight!" is not the most sophisticated chorus I've ever heard

the 3 singles of the album have been 3 of u2's biggest ever singles here in the UK maybe u guys in the US don't have any sort of music taste!

Makes you wonder why they tour U.S. more than any other place.

:hmm:

All the shows are sold out, but they don't get a lot of airplay. Plus, many people I know despise U2. So why do U2 like America so much.

:hmm:

I feel sorry for you people who listen to radio in North America, we got 2 U2 songs today on the radio but no City, well guess One and TST will have to do.

Dude, radio over here sucks too, at least in Ireland. I think the UK have a few half-decent rock channels.

I have built up enough of a CD collection that I don't have to listen to radio any more.

Funnily enough of the 2 or 3 DJ's that are worth listening to here, one of them is a Canadian girl.

Are you kidding?

Ok, they do play U2 songs occasionally on Irish radio but it's always the most obvious choices, rarely anything remotely unusual or even anything that wasn't a hit.

What stations do you listen to, i listen for 5 hours and there is always at least 1 to a max of 3 U2 songs on in that time.

City is a mediocre song with a wishy-washy melody and a lame chorus. It is a poor choice for a single.

No amount of promomotion can help that.

City of Blinding Lights in my opinion is one of the greatest U2 songs of all time, definitely in my top 30.

I wouldn´t say its one of the greatest U2 songs ever but it is hardly a mediocre song either. It´s a great song in my opinion and it has the potential to be a U2 classic.

City, Miracle drug, Sometimes, Original, Love and peace, Vertigo ...
At least 6 songs off bomb which are great.
I have claimed this from the beggining: this is the best U2 album since AB.

Canada does not suck when it comes to U2. All of their singles off HTDAAB have and continue to have heavy airplay on Mainstream and Modern Rock stations in Ontario (Toronto and Ottawa), and fairly heavy airplay on Classic Rock and AC stations.

I totally agree with you. It's a really great song. It needs some listenings in the beginning, but after that....
Maybe it's not catchy enough to play it a lot on the radio in most countries? Although radio sucks also in the Netherlands, an exception is there for U2. It's still played very often here on the radio (and of course Bono was happy about that as he told us in Amsterdam). COBL was (and still is) a big hit (third top 3 single out of 3) and it's still at number 6? in the airplay chart....

I think OOTS and Miracle Drug will be top 5 singles here...

Another interesting chart...

While digging into what's offered in my limited BB subscription, I eventually navigated to a Nielsen/Soundscan monitoring of radio play AND downloads, by format, which is something you don't see on Billboard - yet.

Everyone knows that for the BB Hot 100, downloads (and traditional CD sales) are now included with the cumulative radio play across all their formats. On the other hand, all charts except for the Hot 100 and Pop 100 EXCLUDE singles sales or downloads.

So, I looked at some formats, and here is how COBL is actually doing when you combine downloads and radio spins, which combined gives the song an "index score". Here is the chart for "Mainstream Adult Top 40", combining radio spins rank (51) and # of downloads (total), resulting in a combined rank of #30. As for Triple A, the opposite is true...it has a #7 rank in radio play (spins), but the 106K downloads actually drop the song, on that format, to #15. You have to subscribe to see the Top 75...so this is the Top 30 only, although COBL is shown to be charting on two other formats, one of which has to be Mainstream Rock...but the other? Who knows. This was updated on Thursday when BB was updated.

Thats ok, the HOT 100 AIRPLAY chart only has 75 positions. Thats just the way they have always done that chart. Its probably better to say, this is the AIRPLAY chart, used for the HOT 100. This chart plus the sales charts are averaged together in some formula to determine the top 100 songs in the country.

This Airplay chart is the true gauge of what is really being played on the radio across the country.

Thanks for posting it BeLIEve!

Notice that Coldplay's "Speed Of Sound" peaked at #28, only 3 positions above where "Vertigo" peaked (#31).

COBL wasn't a suitable single, but it's a great song live. In fact, I dare say that it comes off better live than any of the other HTDAAB songs.
