This is really impressive for U2. How To Dismantle Atomic Bomb was released the last week in November 2004, so all of its sales were counted for the Billboard 2005 year end chart.

Achtung Baby was also released in the last week of November 1991 and had all of its sales counted in for the year end Billboard top 200 albums chart for 1992.

Achtung Baby came in at #5 for 1992, How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb came in at #8 for 2005. What this shows us, is that in the United States, one of the toughest markets for U2, in terms of selling copies of the latest album, their position in the industry is essentially the same as it was in 1992, a year many people consider to be the height of U2's popularity! Very impressive!

Its also interesting to note that no album was able to sell 5 million copies during the 52 weeks from late November 2004 to mid November 2005 in the United States.

and another importnat fact is: u2 leads the internet albums charts!!!! it's very impressive!!!!!

Yes, not bad going...

Anyone got the actual sales figures ? Will be interesting to see how they compare with the 2004 EOY Soundscan figures (Bomb was 19th with 2,156,112).

I s'pose the essential difference between Achtung & Bomb is that Bombs sales were more front loaded. I wonder how many Achtung actually sold in that equivalent 1992 period ?

Achtung sold over 4 million copies in the USA during its first year and a total of 10 million worldwide. BOMB has sold almost 3 million in the USA and over 9 million worldwide in its first year. Its difficult to compare 1992 to 2005, because market conditions are very different in many ways. What is easy to compare is U2's album sales total relative to the other artist. What we find there is that there is essentially no difference in regards to U2's album sales of the current album relative to other artist between 1992 and 2005, which is very impressive since 1992 is often seen as U2's biggest or one of their biggest years in the USA.

U2's Soundscan total for the 52 week Billboard time frame is 2.9 million copies sold.

Another thing to consider is that while HTDAAB was the 8th biggest selling album in the United States from November 2004 to November 2005, it was the 2ND BIGGEST selling album WORLDWIDE during that same time frame. The only album that sold more was Green Day's American Idiot.

Thx for the answer Sting. Once again then, # 5 with over 4M would seem to imply that the overall US market was bigger back in '91 / '92 than '04 / '05 (though i know Achtung did better in '92 than Bomb has in '05)... interesting.

I'm no expert, but I would i see that 5 of the top 8 are RnB/Hip Hop. I imagine that across the rest of the world, those genres do less well, explaining U2 and Greenday having higher positions

Achtung did better in 92' relative to the competition than BOMB has done in 05, but not by much at all. Gwen Staffani at #6 was only a couple hundred thousand copies ahead of the BOMB in the USA for the chart period.

Bomb was a little fortunate that ALL of its big selling weeks managed to be counted in the chart. If it was released a few weeks earlier, it wouldn't have been so high, thats why ATYCLB didnt chart as high as it could have on the year end chart.

But Achtung was released at the same time in 1991 as HTDAAB was released in 2004. The first week of release for each album was the begining of the Billboard chart year. So, you can get an excellant comparison of how U2 is doing in the United States in 2004/2005 compared to 1991/1992 in terms of sales of the latest album relative to the competition. Achtung Baby finished at #5 for the 1992 year while BOMB finished at #8 for 2005.

ATYCLB sold about 100,000 copies more than BOMB in the first 52 weeks in the USA. But ATYCLB would not rank as high if it had been released the last week in November like BOMB and Achtung, because sales back in 2001 overall were much higher then. Essentially, you had to sell a lot more album in 2001 in order to make it into the top 10 than you do in 2005. This is because of file/sharing, CD Burning, and other ways of getting music for free.

Sting is correct - AB was released in Nov. 1991. So ALL of its sales would have counted for this "year end chart" come 1992. HTDAAB holds no advantage in that aspect.

The difference is that early on AB was promoted only by "The Fly" and U2's reputation. "The Fly" was a marginal hit in the U.S., at best. AB debuted at #1 mostly because it was U2. AB then lingered near the top on the strength of "Mysterious Ways" and "One".

In contrast, the ubiquitous "Vertigo" enabled HTDAAB to debut with an enormous first week, and the holiday sales kept it near the top. Sadly, subsequent singles were horribly promoted in the U.S. - the worst promotion I've ever seen (I'd fire U2's marketing team). Only when U2 did the second iPod commercial did HTDAAB start making a reappearance in the Top 200.

Regardless, the fact that in an era of horrible CD sales (back in '91, albums, tapes and CD's were sold - no mp3's were available), U2's album is still in the Top 10 for the year. Heck, JT only finished #3 for the year in 1987!! And as we saw, AB finished #5. This shows U2 still is wildly popular, even many years into their career.

Where did all of U2's other albums rank on the year end chart? ATYCLB must have been on it for 3 years.

I think we should be VERY pleased with this result - considering there was only one smash (Vertigo) and one/two decent (if that) hits (Sometimes, COBL), it sold remarkably well, even if it was frontloaded sales-wise. It has achieved nearly 75% of ATYCLB's total sales in the US thus far (3m to 4.2m, respectively). That's an amazing achievement for any artist to do for a follow-up to a big album, esp. 4 years after it was released.

As for marketing, I know I may get flamed for this, but I don't think U2's marketing team could have created a hit song with those that were released. Interest just wasn't there for several of the singles this time. A large portion of airplay for U2 is on rock and lately adult rock/ac formats. Songs like Sometimes and COBL are tailor made for those stations. Yet, they didn't make a significant impact there and that stopped them from being added to any Pop stations. The best promotion is word-of-mouth and gaining momemtum at niche radio nowadays (that's how Vertigo started - it wasn't immediately played on Pop radio - that came months after it was a staple at modern rock/ac stations). I suppose the marketing machine could have done more to grant promotions and what not but for some reason, I still think the singles would have failed. I'm sure I'll be told otherwise, though

simply the wrong choice of follow up singles caused the dramatic slowdownof sales, esp in the US. I had been saying for some time that A Man & A Woman w/be a great single - appealing to a new audience-but we got the usual type of (predictable) single releases.

It is puzzling then that Bono (in the latest Q interview - on how he has been somewhat disappointed on how Bomb has been received ) bemoans the fact that the aforementioned track isn't really known outside of U2's core fan base. Easy answer Bono - you should have released it as a single.

Mike

It should also be said that the music market is a lot different to 2000/2001.
Are there any statistics regarding overall sales of the top 10/20/50 at yearend of 2001 versus 2005?
