I assume this is the proper place to put this thread. The original one was closed rather than simply moved (don't know why) but anyway...

Maria is out, Federer is on a roll.

If Federer wins the tournament, do you consider it a legitimate win considering that Rafa is out and with last year's classic match still fresh in our minds?

absolutely.

with federer suffering from mono throughout last year, do any of you feel that nadal was a lesser champion at roland garros or wimbledon?

hewitt is in a rich vein of form... smashed del potro, who seems to struggle against the big players.

but, he's been in "good form" before.

the women's game is frustrating.. there's no consistency. federer's been top two for ages, the women's top five changes constantly.

That's why it's exciting....

Wozniacki looked good last night against Kirilenko, and Azarenka could be a good chance for the title. She could really take it right up to the Williams'.

I just hope that Murray guy doesn't win. Won't hear the end of it.

I watched like 5min. of the Murray match yesterday. I can't watch those matches, I always get the feeling that I have to get out and play myself.

I bloody well hope li'l Hewy gets knocked out in the 3rd round, he just won't go away!

I really can't see anyone beating Roger for the title so i'd just pencil that in.

Fed vs Murray final would be a great match. More appealing (to me at least) than Fed vs. Nadal (if Murray starts to step it up in GS's). Murray's game is prettier and more versatile than Nadal with a full repertoire of drops, slices, lobs and deadly placement.

I think it would be a classic and I hope in the end Fed gets his 15th GS.

Men's quarters tomorrow look very promising: Hewitt against Roddick and Andy Murray versus Juan Carlos Ferrero in the top draw; Tommy Haas against Novak Djokovic and Federer versus Ivo Karlovic in the bottom draw.

I predict Hewitt facing Murray in one semi, and Federer versus Djokovic in the other.

Roddick leading Murray at the moment, winner to play Federer.

I feel like Federer got a break this time because Nadal had to withdraw from the tournament before it started due to injury. He's the reigning champion and he won't even get to defend his title.

Roddick already won. He has never looked this good. Ever. I hate the man, but I hope that this is a 2004-esque mini-classic. Should be wonderful, if Roddick brings this strong a game.

Yup. Roddick is in the best shape of his career and has been consistently playing the best tennis of his career for months. If he wins on Sunday, I will throw a party and you are all invited.

I completely agree, earlier in the decade there was a lot of depth but now it's just complete inconsistency. Sharapova and Ivanovic especially need to step and stop exiting so early. The Williams sisters keep getting to Finals because they have that match to match consistency.

 This is exactly what I was talking about.

Safina is the world number one, and still will be regardless of the final result, but she shouldn't even have bothered showing up to her semi in hindsight. The Williams sisters are really the only consistently good women's tennis players of the past few years, at least.

Once again another Williams' sisters finale to Wimbledon '09, how many times have we seen these happen, a lot I guess. Venus Williams is going for her 6th Wimbledon crown and I honestly think she'll get it.

Tennis has been my favorite sport to keep up with the past 2 years - right after NFL and the NHL. In some ways, I prefer tennis as I'm one of those that believes parity (caps & free agency) has killed true superstars and long, bitter and empassioned rivalries in team sports. Worse yet, Canadian teams bleed top talent annually and well, you get the point.

For above reasons and more, I started watching tennis about 2-3 years ago, right when Roger Federer and Nadal we're in the height of their rivalry. Honestly, the ups & downs in the tennis world the past year have been incredible. I've already put up one thread on my purported (the girlfriend's claim) man-crush on Roger Federer (ref tennis affairs).

Loved the fact that Roddick made it through the Murray hype. I really want him to win one...unfortunately, not against Fed. And with Fed pretty much making every Final, well, I suppose poor Roddick (in my heart) just has to suffer.

Amazing that most Americans then (I can only speculate based on the terrible, terrible TV coverage in the US) don't seem to care for their tennis champions. Roddick's peaking at a time when he's supposed to be going the other way. 26 is on the other side of one's tennis prime and for him to have disposed of whiny, bratty, Murray, is a triumph for one of the good guys in my opinion.

Three of the four Wimbledon single finalists this year are from the US. Show them some love folk. Some of the greatest players in the history of the sport are American, so why the lack of support? Absence of tennis coverage/importance is everywhere from ESPN/CNN SI boards right through tele programming.

As a Canadian rooting for Roger Federer (Swiss) to win his 15th Slam - sheesh, I won't go on about what the man's accomplished - it shouldn't be my role in expressing these thoughts. I just feel bad for Roddick, perhaps with more support/love, his career might have been a little brighter.

Nah, I think the womens game is fine, lots of young talent coming through.

The Federer/Nadal rivalry is still going strong...they met in the Australian Open final again this year, and had Nadal not gotten injured, he may well have made it to the final of the French and not withdrawn from Wimbledon this year.

This era just has not been great for U.S. men's tennis. As well as Roddick has been playing recently, his career as a whole has been disappointing, and he's never seemed to have the skillset necessary to beat Federer or Nadal, he's never seemed to be a truly elite player. Outside of Roddick, this era of men's tennis has given the U.S. no one to route for. But make no mistake, give the U.S. someone to route for, and we will. In the previous generation/era/whatever of men's tennis, the U.S. had two of the top ten greatest players ever in Sampras and Agassi and there was never any shortage of support for them. When Agassi lost the final match of his career at the 2006 U.S. Open in New York, the crowd in Arthur Ashe Stadium gave him an eight minute long, non-stop standing ovation. They truly loved him. Also, I'd say 30 rather than 26 is on the other side of one's tennis prime.

I'm a Nadal fan. Federer winning everything makes tennis boring. I'll be routing for Roddick.

Serena was on her game today, nobody was beating her. Venus' serve got away from her in the 2nd, and I think her knee was giving her problems...but even if she was 100% I think Serena wins that match.

namkcuR:

Much appreciative of your responses to my posts, however there are a few things I see somewhat differently:

Nadal lost to Soderling at the French. The first time the words "Nadal" and "confirmed injury" were thrust together were post that.

A rivalry isn't much of one when one side isn't even participating. There are lingering concerns - Nadal's playing style isn't prone to longevity, if/when he comes back, will be change his hard-on-the-knees approach? Personally, I don't much care for Novak or Murray, so I'm one Fed fan that hopes and wishes for Nadal to make a quick and speedy return because the game needs him.

You're right, the drama and suspense without Nadal is missing as he's the only one to consistently thwart Fed from winning everything.

Popularity and success in tennis haven't always gone hand-in-hand. Anna Kornikova (sp?), Sharapova, Sabatini are just some names from present/past that haven't accomplished much but been very, very, popular. At one time, Sharapova was earning more than Federer if I recall right.

Which leads back to my original point about tennis and America's lack of passion for it. Aside from Switzerland & Spain, the rest of the world hasn't exactly had much to cheer for on the men's side the past five years - yet, observe the excitement over Murray this year at Wimbledon or, Monfils/Tsonga during the French Open.

Aside from Federer, Roddick's been the only other player to have held a top 10 ranking for the past 6 years - which is no mere accomplishment. Then there's the women's side where you've had the dominance of the Williamses for the better part of the decade.

Sure, of course, this era (pertinent to the US), cannot compare to the previous one where Sampras and Agassi dominated. But should that directly lead to such a lack of interest in the sport at all? I mean, come on - Nathan's Hot Dog contest is run live on ESPN while the finals at Wimbledon (where 3 players are AMERICAN) are tape delayed because of broadcasting rights by NBC. It's just sick - oh well, at least you have the satisfaction of having the American scarf the most dogs over that Japanese kid.

Sorry, aside from football, baseball, basketball and golf (in that order), Americans aren't interested in other sports in collectively large numbers - which is a shame because Tennis and Ice Hockey are truly incredible, passionate and beautiful in their own right as sports.

PS
I think you mean to write "rooting"

No way in hell the men's tennis prime is at thirty. All the greats had their major accomplishments between 20-30. Aside from Agassi (who seemed to burn brightest after 28), name one other player who dominated after 28.

Saying that, I do hope you are right though. I'd love nothing more than another 5 years of Federer brilliance.

Good to see the cool Williams sister prevail and not her annoying sister.

C'mon Fed tonight. Roddick did an awesome thing in eliminating that pest Murray, but Federer is just awesome.

Woo Hoo!!!! Roger Federer is the man. He inspires me to get off the couch and play some tennis.

okay, maybe he's not THAT good...but I still want him to win Wimbledon. And the US Open. That would be enough for '09.

Beyond that, I won't root (to borrow somebody's word) for anything else till '10.
